Re: Topic 6 DQ 1
For my DPI project, I plan to implement a care bundle to prevent the surgical site infections in post-operative craniotomy patients. The bundle that I plan to implement is similar to that which was investigated by Jimenez-Martinez et al. (2020). This bundle consists of staff training on and implementation of pre-operative cleaning with chlorhexidine gluconate, and hair cutting with single use clippers as indicated for the procedure. A prospective analysis performed by Wassef et al. (2020) further supports the research by Jimenez-Martinez et al. (2020). This analysis was performed on a bundle that was released at a hospital in Cairo, Egypt. The bundle included staff education, antimicrobial prophylaxis, and daily care with chlorhexidine.
For this project, I think that the most appropriate health promotion theory is the Theory of planned behavior. This theory explains behaviors over which people exert self-control (The Theory of Planned Behavior, n.d.). It is further explained that behavioral intent is a key aspect of this theory. Behavioral intentions are influenced by the attitude about the likelihood that the behavior will have the expected outcome and the subjective evaluation of the risks and benefits of that outcome (The Theory of Planned Behavior, n.d.). In the context of my project, I imagine the behaviors as the parts of the bundle we will be implementing. Over time the staff will become more proficient at performing these task, decreasing the likelihood of an infection occurring. Hopefully this will also cause them to expect that their intervention is decreasing the likelihood of the patients developing an infection. Each individual staff member will exert control over these tasks, so this I believe this theory fits well.

Sample Answer 2 for DNP 825 Provide an overview of the health promotion theory and program evaluation model you will use in your DPI Project
The Health Belief Model is a theoretical model that can be used to guide health promotion and disease prevention programs. It is used to explain and predict individual changes in health behaviors. It is one of the most widely used models for understanding health behaviors. Wu et al. (2020), explains that the key elements of the Health Belief Model focus on individual beliefs about health conditions, which predict individual health-related behaviors. The model defines the key factors that influence health behaviors as an individual’s perceived threat to sickness or disease (perceived susceptibility), belief of consequence (perceived severity), potential positive benefits of action (perceived benefits), perceived barriers to action, exposure to factors that prompt action (cues to action), and confidence in ability to succeed.
The Health Belief Model can be used to design short- and long-term interventions. This will be very beneficial in my project. The five key action-related components that determine the ability of the Health Belief Model to identify key decision-making points that influence health behaviors are:
- Gathering information by conducting a health needs assessments and other efforts to determine who is at risk and the population(s) that should be targeted.
- Conveying the consequences of the health issues associated with risk behaviors in a clear and unambiguous fashion to understand perceived severity.
- Communicating to the target population the steps that are involved in taking the recommended action and highlighting the benefits to action.
- Providing assistance in identifying and reducing barriers to action.
- Demonstrating actions through skill development activities and providing support that enhances self-efficacy and the likelihood of successful behavior changes.
These actions represent key elements of the Health Belief Model and can be used to design or adapt health promotion or disease prevention programs. To ensure success with this model, it is important to identify “cues to action” that are meaningful and appropriate for the target population.

DNP-825 Topic 6 DQ 2 Sample Answer
Discuss a health-related need present in your community.
The health related need present in my community is Covid-19 vaccination to help end Covid-19 pandemic as a preventable health concern. Vaccination is the most impactful and cost-effective public health intervention available for averting the pandemic. It offers protection against Covid-19 as a preventable disease while laying the foundation for primary health care, providing an avenue for delivering other basic health services, and bringing the community into contact with health systems (Henry et al., 2021). In addition, the investment in Covid-19 vaccination would bring about broad economic and social benefits. Getting fully vaccinated against Covid-19 is important for preventing serious illness, acts as a safe and reliable way for building protection against first infection, and offers added protection for those previously infection (Bartsch et al., 2021). Since Covid-19 first emerged in 2019, there has been tremendous gains in developing and providing public access to vaccines. Despite these achievements, the vaccination coverage rates have stagnated. Approximately 80.9% of the USA population has received at least one dose of the vaccine while only 69.1% of the population is fully vaccinated. There is a need to increase Covid-19 vaccination rates (Our World in Data, 2023).
What health improvement program or methodology would you use to solve this problem and what would be a reasonable timeline for implementation? Provide examples of measures that APNs might use when collaborating with direct care nurses to implement evidence-based changes based on community health improvement programs.
An appropriate program for improving vaccination rate is nurse-led public education that would be implemented in two months. The education program would focus on rethinking how nurses talk about vaccines and changing the views of those who are highly skeptical about vaccine effectiveness and safety. This involves creating education material that amplifies accurate and positive information about the vaccines, while building public resilience to misinformation. In addition, presenting vaccination as a social norm; showing that it is a common and widely accepted health activity. This aspect leverages the trusted and powerful voice of nurses as it gets individuals to share the positive impacts of vaccination on their lives (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2020).
