Re: Topic 8 DQ 1
Seventy years ago, ethics in nursing centered around a duty to remain loyal and obedient to doctors; fortunately, nursing has evolved, and our responsibility for ethical behavior stresses the humane treatment of patients (Haddad & Geiger, 2022). This process includes treatment or providing care without prejudice or bias (Haddad & Geiger, 2022). The consistency of health disparities proves that the Doctor of Nursing Practice has a long way to go to achieve equality in healthcare provision (Haddad & Geiger, 2022).
For example, racial disparities are prevalent in all aspects of our society; as such, using veterans and soldiers to explain these differences proves valid (Koehlmoos et al., 2021). Minority soldiers are also subjected to inequality in medical treatment (Koehlmoos et al., 2021). According to a construct analysis measuring biases in treatment were determined due to unequal outcomes. The study included military and private treatment facilities with disparities in “surgery, trauma, opioid prescription and usage, women’s health, and others (Koehlmoos et al., 2021).”
Guidelines from the nurse’s code of ethics necessitate compassionate, respectful practice ensuring our patients maintain their dignity and self-worth (Haddad & Geiger, 2022). Hence, as the DNP continues their training, we must advocate for processes that decrease these disparities. Advocating includes using our voices to report injustices. Finally, Christ serves as a guide for our treatment of man, dying so that our sins are forgiven. His sacrifice is a reminder of our duty to treat others as we would like to be treated.

Sample Answer 2 for DNP 840 Discuss the importance of the ethical delivery of care and regulatory reporting as it relates to the doctorally prepared advanced nurse’s practice
It is now clear that healthcare inequalities are encoded right into the health data that serve as the substrate for healthcare machine learning (ML) research and model development. ML researchers have exposed the presence of pernicious bias (ie, differences in health conditions related to social inequality) within health data and their impact on model performance. The persistence of healthcare inequalities poses an ethical threat to the core values of health institutions. As ML is adopted within medical practice, attention to how factors such as bias may impact the use of ML in vulnerable populations is imperative. According to McCradden et al. (2020), despite long-standing recognition of disparities, scientific knowledge about how social determinants of health drive disparate outcomes continues to evolve. The effects of differential access, distrust of medical institutions, housing or food security, racialization, health insurance, and others can be replicated in ML models. The implications of imprudent incorporation of biased model predictions in clinical decision-making can be troubling.
The diversity of religion within our world’s population brings challenges for health care providers and systems to deliver culturally competent medical care. Cultural competence is the ability of health providers and organizations to deliver health care services that meet the cultural, social, and religious needs of patients and their families. Culturally competent care can improve patient quality and care outcomes. Strategies to move health professionals and systems towards these goals include providing cultural competence training and developing policies and procedures that decrease barriers to providing culturally competent patient care. If providers and health care systems are not working together to provide culturally competent care, patients may have untoward health consequences, receive poor quality care, and be dissatisfied with the care they receive. The quality of patient-health professional interactions is decreased. Lower-quality patient-health professional interactions are associated with decreased satisfaction in the healthcare provider. In fact, African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, and Muslims report that the quality of their care was diminished because of their ethnicity or race. As a DNP prepared advocate I can help our health systems and healthcare providers wiht developing strategies and techniques to respond to the religious and spiritual needs of patients and families for a number of reasons. One reason is that, in addition to TJC, state and federal guidelines encourage institutional responsiveness to population diversity. These strategies are essential to meeting the federal government’s Healthy People goal of eliminating ethnic and racial health disparities.

DNP 840 TOPIC 8 DQ 2 Sample Answer
Nurse leaders face ethical dilemmas at their workplaces that need to be addressed. As a nurse leader, I encountered a situation where a healthcare professional refused to provide care to a patient because the patient had different values from hers. The healthcare professional stated that her religious values and beliefs forbid her from interacting with individuals from the LGBTQ+ population. The patient’s condition required immediate attention, and I could not find her replacement because other nurses were busy with other duties and responsibilities. The nurses’ refusal to provide care raises a significant healthcare issue. Ethical principles, specifically justice, require nurses to provide high-quality patient care despite their sexual orientation (Haddad & Geiger, 2021). This refusal to provide care puts the patient’s health at risk. It violates the ANA Code of Ethics, which requires nurses to provide compassionate, respectful, and non-discriminatory care to all patients.
Using the ANA Code of Ethics as a guiding resource to address the ethical issue. I would assess the nurse’s perspective and the potential impact on the patient’s health and well-being. In this case, the ANA code of ethics requires nurses to provide safe, culturally-competent, and efficient care to everyone and ensure respect for the dignity and worth of every person (Haddad & Geiger, 2021). As a healthcare professional, I am faced with educating the nurse about the significance of providing quality care to all patients. I had a transparent and honest conversation with the nurse to understand their perspective and beliefs and to explain how their actions were not aligned with the ANA Code of Ethics. I also ensured that she underwent training on cultural competence, diversity, and inclusion, which helped the nurse provide high-quality care to all patients.
However, the ANA Code of Ethics may have some gaps that could hinder addressing the ethical issue appropriately. For instance, the subject of religious views and how they could clash with providing non-discriminatory care needs to be addressed explicitly in the ANA Code of Ethics. The Code should offer additional direction on how nurses can create a balance between their moral convictions and their professional responsibilities to treat every patient with compassion and respect, regardless of their sexual orientation. The Code should also include more detailed guidance for nursing leaders on how to deal with and avoid workplace discrimination, such as through developing policies and practices that support diversity, equity, and inclusion.
