Re: Topic 5 DQ 1
One professional nursing organization is the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN1969). Their website can be found at: https://www.aacn.org/.
The mission of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses is to provide professional and personal support to nurses who care for acutely and critically ill patients and their families. They aim to promote excellence in critical care nursing practice, advocate for patient safety and quality care, and foster the professional development of critical care nurses.
One thing that caught my attention on the AACN website is their extensive collection of educational resources. They offer a variety of educational programs, certification review courses, practice resources, and research publications focused on critical care nursing. These resources provide evidence-based information, guidelines, and best practices that can enhance my knowledge, skills, and confidence in providing optimal care to critically ill patients.
In addition, the AACN offers a vibrant online community and networking opportunities through their membership platform. This allows critical care nurses to connect with peers, share experiences, and access a supportive network of professionals who understand the unique challenges and demands of critical care nursing. Engaging with this community can provide valuable insights, mentorship, and collaboration opportunities for professional growth and learning.
Being a member of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses would be helpful to me in my practice as it would give me access to the latest evidence-based practices, educational resources, and a supportive community of critical care nurses. Staying updated on best practices, networking with peers, and having access to relevant resources would enable me to provide high-quality care to critically ill patients, stay informed about advancements in critical care, and enhance my professional development in this specialized area of nursing.
Sample Answer 2 for NRS 430 Discuss how professional nursing organizations support the field of nursing and how they advocate for nursing practice
Interesting organization you chose. It’s actually an organization that I’ve never heard of before but provides vital training and resources to the critical care specialty. The American Association of Critical Care nurses consist of a highly stressful, fast paced, and life or death work environments. This specialty requires nurses that can critically decipher critical information in a high stress situation. What stuck out the most to me about this unique origination is that it is so passionate about educating their nurses skills, that the AACN offers lots of free educational programs, resources to guidelines as well as a practice resource (AACN, 1969). The fact that the AACN offers a special networking community for information to be shared in a forum, and a mentor-ship program for new nurses to be taken under the wing of experienced nurses, as they begin this entry into nursing. The first year of nursing is such a venerable, stressful, scary, and unknown experience, which usually makes or breaks a nurse. The support services offered by the AACN organization lets other Critical Care nurses feel supported in many different areas. Critical care nursing peaks my interest, and hopefully it will be an area I can expand my experience into one day.

Sample Answer 3 for NRS 430 Discuss how professional nursing organizations support the field of nursing and how they advocate for nursing practice
Advocacy is important in the world of nursing. Often like we forget about self-care; we forget to advocate for ourselves. Advocating for ourselves as a workforce can have rewarding benefits like better healthcare laws for nurses that ensure our safety and better working conditions. The International Council of Nurses works with one goal and allows nurses to use their voices as one to try and change health policy and advance nursing (Helbig, 2022). Nurses work as part of an interdisciplinary team in various healthcare settings and nurses also serve as political leaders at different levels of politics, so it is in the nurse’s favor to advocate (Helbig, 2022).
The American Nurses Association (ANA) says advocacy is a pilar of nursing (The American Nurses Association [ANA], n.d.) The ANA upholds its promise to help nurses’ wellbeing, for positive patient outcomes and happier nurses (ANA, n.d.). Nurses dedicate their lives to being the best providers for their patients. Nurses would not be able to provide the care they do without the help from nursing organizations, other nurses, and legislature (ANA, n.d.). The ANA keeps current with health care to help nurses succeed and deliver quality care (ANA, n.d.). Nurses are encouraged to work to the full extent of their education due to various problems in health care (ANA, n.d.). Nursing is about advocating for your patients, but also being able to see the importance of advocating for the profession. In turn advocating for the profession increases positivity around the workplace and with patient care.

NRS 430 Topic 5 DQ 2
Advocacy as it pertains to patient care is a very big part of what being a nurse is. Advocacy for patients is deeply rooted in the nursing profession and a lot of what we do revolves around just that, advocating for our patients. When nurses advocate for themselves within the profession they are in turn advocating for their patients, every type of advocacy that nurses do ultimately falls back to one principle, what is safe for the patient. It is important that nurses work together, across employment settings and roles, to advocate on behalf of colleagues and the profession. Nurses comprise the largest professional group within health care and have been recognized by the public as the most trusted profession (Tomajan, 2012). Advocacy for patient care is important because it keeps the safety of our patients at first hand. As the world changes around us and the health care environment continues to change and evolve, the profession of nursing must mold to what is safest for our patients and that always finds a foundation in patient advocacy. This is where first hand nursing experience with patients comes in, nurses can use their voice and experience to let policy makers know what is working or not working, and even so become the policy makers if they wish. Advocacy starts with good communication between nurse and patient and continues on to good communication between nurse and other disciplines in the health care system. When nurses advocate for patients, stand up for patients’ rights, or work to meet their need for care, that nurse is actively assuming the role of patient advocate (Helbig 2018). When working in the Emergency Department I came across a situation where I found myself actively being the patients advocate at time of discharge. I was caring for an elderly patient who was living in a senior care assisted living center that had come to see us in the ED for a broken wrist from a fall. As I assessed the patient and the time with the patient went on it became apparent after assessment that the patient was suffering from elder abuse. The doctor cleared the patients medically and was ready to discharge the patient back to the same senior care home with a splinted broken wrist with orders to follow up with and orthopedist as soon as possible. As the nurse I advocated for this patient by reporting the elder abuse as well as collaborating with the social worker and the patients family to seek out a new assisted living care home for this patient to go to. Overall through my thorough assessment I was able to learn about possible elder abuse of this patient, report it to the proper authorities as a mandatory reporter and seek better care on behalf of my patient. If I was not a diligent nurse in this patient advocacy situation this patient could have ended up right back where they were and in harms way, also if I did not report this, unreported abuse could be potentially happening to many more elder people at this assisted living care home. As nurses we must always advocate for our patients and continue to be mandatory reporters in order to protect our patients.
