Re: Topic 5 DQ 1
There are many good points made in this article with effective solutions to a degree. Nursing is a challenging field because we are expected to excel in every aspect of the job, knowing skills, communication with patients and providers, getting drinks, snacks and calling family for updates. It can be very overwhelming to complete all of these tasks for 6-8 patients a day and find time to chart on the patients in an effective manner. I do understand there needs to be compassion and communication along with effective skills and knowledge, but it can be challenging to complete effectively. I really agree with liaison staff however many hospitals don’t want to spend money on more positions and having volunteers is a wonderful idea. They are there because they genuinely love the job. We have volunteers where I work, and they are truly such a blessing to have. They help in more ways than they understand with getting blankets and snacks, sitting with patients who just want someone to listen, communicating surgery updates and taking specimens to lab is just a few things that our volunteers do to help ensure we can perform the best patient care possible.

This was a good article. What I took away from it is that patients want their nurse to be able to have time to show care, compassion, and have time to have meaningful conversations that are not rushed. Many nurses go into nursing because the art of nursing is intuitive for most. They have a desire to help people live a healthy life. EBP is important and helps nurses develop skills and protocols that need to be learned to help prevent hospital acquired infections.
What I also took away from this article is that the author talked about that it is the nurse’s responsibility to make sure they don’t loose the art of nursing skills, implement EBP and make these changes themselves. The article mentioned working with IT to take away unnecessary charting application forms. Does the nurse call themselves or is this collaborative where the nurse manager should call?
I think that this raises the issue that nurses are not supported by their employer, they are expected to do all that is acquired to incorporate the art of nursing and EBP without anything else changing. More and more charting responsibilities and policy changes are put into place everyday that increases the nurses work load but nothing is done to decrease patient ratios or acknowledge the shortage of nurses. It’s not so much shortages as hospitals just don’t hire enough to support the art of nursing. Practicing evidence based interventions could lead to poor outcomes if nurses do not have the time to properly learn them.
My take away was that it is the nurses responsibility to make sure they don’t loose the skill of the Art of Nursing while adhering to EBP guidelines. There wasn’t any discussion how employers can help so nurses can give better patient care.

According to Whitehead (2018), the role of health education in health promotion is:
– To empower the individual through education.
-To make informed choices and decisions regarding their own personal health for the better.
-Giving back control regarding their own health and well-being.
Health education presents information to the target population on health topics, including health benefits, threats they face and provides support to change according to the setting. It is one of the important strategies for implementing health promotion and disease prevention. Health education activities include lectures, courses, seminars etc. Health education is an integral part of the nursing process. The main goal of health education is to achieve long lasting positive behavior by providing enough knowledge to the population. The nurse uses this process to assess the effectiveness of the plan implemented and education program.
One of the major contemporary issues is addiction. Peaceful, loving homes can be divided by the strain caused by drug and alcohol addiction. Conflicts become normal in those families. This may develop severe trauma or the development of unhealthy coping mechanisms. Therefore, nurses play a significant role in developing health education plans. Instruct people about the devastation raised by addiction. For instance, explain in detail the consequence of addiction to drugs, alcohol…etc. Provide methods to reduces the addiction. NRS 429 TOPIC 5 DQ 2
Domestic violence, child abuse, and elder abuse are some of the major family issues in contemporary society. People subjected to any of the above treatments develop psychological distress and poor health progress (Du Mont, Macdonald, Kosa, Elliot, Spencer & Yaffe, 2015). Additionally, some abuses are associated with physical assault and the victims may present with physical injuries such as bruises. Apart from the immediate psychological and physical injuries suffered by the victims, they are also vulnerable to long-term social and economic effects. Healthcare providers can identify physical injuries and psychological distress during health assessment (Beach, Carpenter, Rosen, Sharps & Gelles, 2016). Observing any of these may give the healthcare providers a reason to suspect domestic violence, child abuse or elderly abuse. Furthermore, healthcare providers can ask the patients about family relationship. People suffering any of the abuse are most likely to be bitter and disconnected from their families. Nurses and other healthcare providers play key roles in the identification of domestic violence.
Healthcare institutions have standard procedures for reporting the abuses. The standard procedure used in our facility includes disclosure of the abuse, responding to the victims, record the suspicions and consult with other hospital staffs, and finally report the abuse to the relevant authorizes such as police or other bodies dealing with child and elderly protections depending on the type of abuse involved (Campbell, 2017). It is important to identify and confirm the suspicion before reporting the case to the relevant authorities. All facts about the incident must be recorded accordingly. Additionally, while collecting data from the victim, they must be assured of protection and confidentiality. During the reporting, the kind of mistreatment or exploitation must be identified and confirmed through consultations with other experts within the facility.
