Re: Topic 1 DQ 2
There are numerous schools of thought that attempt to explain leadership and describe what it takes to succeed in a position of power (Williams, 2017). Leadership and the characteristics that enable some people to reach the peak of success while others remain followers are hotly debated topics. Even when defining how leaders grow and what is required to assist them to achieve their goals in broad terms, researchers do not always agree. The multiple sub-theories that have arisen from the contingency theory of leadership indicate this.
Transformational Leadership Theory is one of the most prominent styles of leadership. Leaders work with their teams to achieve a common goal and process change. These leaders can inspire, motivate and provide direction that can be beneficial for all involved (Whitney, 2018). This style of leadership can contribute to increased performance and maximization of the team’s potential. The disadvantages of this leadership style are the team can feel obligated to go beyond what they are asked to do, such as working longer hours to accomplish tasks, to achieve the expected goals of their leader (Indeed Editorial Team, 2021). This can lead to dissatisfaction as they may feel like they are being taken advantage of. In a healthcare setting a leader may have only selected a few nurses to work on a quality improvement process This can be problematic because not all the needs of the team members are met since priority might be given only to those preferred individuals.
The contingency leadership theory approach is dynamic, it changes according to the situation at hand. These leaders can assess the situation and based on that assessment decide what is the best approach (Indeed Editorial Team, 2022). This leadership style can help in assisting the leader to enhance decision-making skills and allow options for the team to work with. The contingency leadership style is reactive and can cause difficulties for the leader to make appropriate decisions as they need to adapt their response to the situation.

Sample Answer 2 for NRS 451 Compare two leadership theories
Some people are just natural born leaders. Leading and managing in nursing impact not only other staff members but also potentially every patient under the staff’s care (Whitney, 2018). Two great theories that support this impact are Situational and Contingency. These theories have very similar foundations that they are built on in regards to the situation. The difference is how management approaches this situation. Situational theory is based more around a relationship oriented foundation and not so much task oriented. The Contingency theory is based more on external factor influence on leadership. In a system undergoing constant change, nursing leaders must be prepared to adjust and be flexible (Whitney, 2018). This is why both theories are good but just in slightly different ways. In relation to nursing the Situational theory is strong in regards to patient satisfaction in a facility by using Paul and Kens application of using a leadership style that conforms to each individual situation. It takes that maturity that they describe for the leader to adapt. Leadership and Management need to adjust how things are done throughout the facility in affiliation to the overall patient experience. From a Contingency theory standpoint in nursing, Leadership and Management would adjust and adapt based on outside issues and concerns. Fred Fielder assumes that management adapt as situations change and there is no specific style that best suits this theory. It’s an ongoing cause an effect from the outside that changes how leadership performs. Both theories are a good form for Leadership and Management to use in nursing just in different ways. They can definitely create a good teamwork environment being that they are situational based. I think in nursing it’s important to utilize everyone views in the workplace so to make the environment an overall good and functional place. This starts with having a strong set of leaders that are open to listen and change what isn’t working. Just as health care environments require new and creative methods of health care delivery, the same is true regarding approaches to leadership (Sullivan, 2012).
