Procrastination, or putting off tasks, can really hurt productivity, especially when it comes to organizing and managing time well. Without using tools like the Eisenhower Matrix to sort tasks by their importance and urgency, students might end up focusing on less important things or delaying crucial ones until deadlines are near. This issue can get worse if students believe that working hard alone is enough for success, instead of also using smart work strategies. Building good habits, such as making daily to-do lists and reviewing them weekly, helps fight procrastination by breaking big tasks into smaller, more manageable steps and sticking to a clear schedule. Bullet journaling can help by keeping everything organized in one place. To tackle procrastination effectively, techniques like the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working for 20 minutes and then taking a 5-minute break, can keep focus and productivity high. Lastly, being punctual ensures tasks are finished on time, which helps with organizing and managing tasks better.
How does procrastination affect your time management? When you keep putting off tasks until the last minute, you end up with a big pile to deal with. What plans do you have to be proactive in completing work and meeting deadlines? I’m a very visual person, so at work I use a large whiteboard to organize my to-do list by day for the current week. I write down all my tasks, appointments, and important items on it. As I complete each task, I erase it from the board. By the end of the week, my whiteboard is almost empty and ready for the next week. Maybe I need an agenda for the class!! 😉

I’ve had bouts of procrastination throughout my life, although it manifested differently, the result was still the same. Earlier in life, my procrastination stemmed from being bored. If I didn’t have interest in a task, most likely it was going to be done last minute and rushed, if it was completed at all. I had no one to guide me through my shortcomings. Joining the military broke me of my procrastination, I was held accountable for my actions and I had to face certain consequences for not getting things done timely. As I got older and I started dealing with bouts of depression, procrastination crept in because of not having the desire to do anything. My time management was a disaster and it just made my life more miserable. I had to focus on my mental health, which helped me combat my lack of motivation. I still struggle with my mental health at times, but I have a support system that’s helping me stay on track.
The main thing, that I am doing to help me stay on top of my assignments and turning them in timely, is involving my wife and daughter. They are on me every day, “did you do your requirement assignments?” I really appreciate they desire to help me succeed and hold me accountable. The next thing is setting earlier deadlines that what is required in the course. Although I turned my assignment in late last night, I will not allow myself to make that a habit. Did I have a reason for submitting my work later than I wanted, yes but I will work through it in the future. By the end of each week, I’ve planned to be finished with all requirements and get a head start on the incoming week going into the weekend. A good thing is, I’m extremely excited about being back in class, so this feeling will help me through these initial weeks.
