My MSN program specialty track is family nurse practitioner (FNP), and in NR 500, my area of interest was how lower socio-economic status impacted healthcare. Although I do feel that this is an important topic, I would like to change my area of interest.
My revised area of interest is on depression and non-pharmacologic ways to treat it. Specifically, I am very interested in musical interventions and its impact on patients who have depression. One reason why I would like to revise my area of research is because I have recently changed jobs, from a mother/baby unit to a med-surg unit and now I take care of many older adult patients who have a history of depression, but do not want to take medication for it because they do not want any more medicine to add to their list of medications that they already take. Since I have had multiple patients tell me this, it has really sparked my interest on what ways that I could help my patients, especially in the future when I become a FNP. Although medicine is wonderful, I have always felt that if there are other ways to help disorders without having to take so much medication, then patients should be educated about it.

For this project, it could go either way meaning either the non-narcotic group or the narcotic group could be either the control or experimental group. Though the feelings and thoughts of individuals with acute pain are important to the research, because they will be rating their pain afterwards, there are ways to measure pain levels. Often times, patients report a pain scale of 10/10 and all vitals are WNL, they are relaxed and no guarding or grimacing are present. An issue I am concerned with in nurse practitioner practice is recognition of depression and proper treatment. I would like to see patients properly diagnosed and treated for depression and for depression to be considered a more serious diagnosis. Depression is a serious health problem that can leave to death or suicide. “Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a serious psychiatric disease with extensive acute and chronic morbidity and mortality associated with short and long-term psychiatric consequences and a higher risk of suicide” (Sibeoni et al., 2023). There is in some cases an admission suicide screening in place. But this screening is looking for a later effect of depression. I recommend a specific depression screening in hopes of diagnosing and treating this disease in the early stages.
