During the time of Industrialization, I chose to focus on this new economy affected Child workers and the Great Plain Indians. While great strides were seen in urban industrial growth it led to several problems, not enough workers on the land and not enough workers, led to the exploitation of the American Indians and Children.
Children were abundant and inexpensive labor for the growing factories. They were used in textiles where they had to help keep the thread from breaking in a hot and humid environment working up to 12-hour days. At 12, it was legal form them to work in the coal mines, but they were three times more likely to die than an adult. Five-year-olds were forced to help peel shrimp and shuck oysters in the Seafood industry.
The Progressive reformers wanted to save the children from the evils of big industry and were successful at enacting some state child protective laws. Their laws were inconsistent in their application. On one side was the family who needed the income from their children to survive. They argued these children would learn valuable skills so they would not need an education. Manufacturers felt that it would hamper their ability to be price competitive.
Several Federal laws were proposed and defeated over the course of the next few years and child labor was never abolished. Children workers become less in demand as manufacturing became automated and the sates begin to strengthen their child labor laws. (ActHartman, 2017)
The American Indians did not benefit from the Industrial Revolution either. As families began to move away from the farm and into the cities to work in factories, it left a lot of land unattended and crops not being grown. The Progressives came up with what they believed was a generous solution that would help the natives integrate into the U.S. and the land would continue to produce. The land was sectioned out in small parcels, with not enough crops or animals to sustain a family. (Sendrow, 2017).
The Progressives continued to push integration and started boarding schools for the children so they could be taken away from the savage customs and become more like the whites. The adult Indians were enticed to give up their tribal ways though teaching Christianity. (U.S. History, 2014)

America is a land in which immigrants (Europeans) that had a different way of life, destroyed the existing way of life (Natives). The survival of the fittest reigned. America represented the land of the free and home of the brave and was attractive on the surface. Unfortunately, it was built on such destructive patterns of greed. It is true, many immigrants were coming into the country as they saw it as the land of opportunity and they were suffering in their country. With the boom of the industrial era, workers were essential. As reformers helped the immigrants to assimilate, the Native American Indians who learned civilized ways were turned away, as well as their land taken. If the constitution and amendments represents American citizens then why does this system take so long to acknowledge all groups that make this country? Natives were not considered Native American Citizens until 1924 (NCC Staff, 2020), even with all the laws of equality and evidence of injustice. The freedom only pertained to European Americans. It was not until the passage of Civil Rights Act of 1965 that all Native American Indians could even vote (NCC Staff, 2020). Although the awareness of history inspires better actions, if greed is a primary factor, it is hard to change.

Women’s Rights Activists were on the forefront of speaking out against the injustices they were faced with every day. They were not allowed to hold public office, vote, own land, or enter into contracts in the early years. However, widowed women were allowed to inherit the land in which their husbands owned and could enter into contracts at that point. During the industrial revolution women were able to enter into the workforce; however, they were paid far less than males in the same fields. Women played a vital role working in textile mills and mines. On top of working this labor some jobs they had to come home and do their “womanly” duties of cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children. During the progressive era several groups forms in the aide of women’s rights. One was the National American woman Suffrage (NAWSA) the leader of this group was Carrie Chapman Catt. This group campaign to empower women in individual states. As they did this, president Wilson passed the women suffrage constitutional amendment. The second, is the National Woman’s Party (NWP) Alice Paul as leader was more revolutionary organization of this time directly helped women in their fight for equality.” African American women, who faced discrimination due to both their race and gender, found a few job opportunities in the garment industry or laundries, but were more often employed as maids and domestic servants.” (OpenStax. (2019). Through the progressive’s emancipation for women’s suffrage movement was passed giving women the right to vote.” Voting wasn’t their only goal, or even their main one. As we know many groups of minorities in this era fell short of what certain people thought the “standard” was at the time. Due to them falling short of the “standard” they were not provided the opportunities and the rights that they so desperately deserved.
Children were used as servants and sometimes used under the guise of an apprentice. They were typical forced to work in some harsh conditions such as unclean factories for long hours without safety codes (Liebel, Manfred, and Antonella Invernizzi). They were also paid less than most adults because they did not have the resources or knowledge to form unions in order to improve the conditions and pay rates (Liebel, Manfred, and Antonella Invernizzi). In the early years, child labor was a staple in agricultural beginnings in America. The industrial revolution saw a peak in child labor because they were in high demand. With the increased number of jobs in manufacturing business, more child laborers filled the positions (Liebel, Manfred, and Antonella Invernizzi). The progressives sought to address child labor by instituting the National Child Labor Committee. They fought for the importance of education for children and to improve the working conditions and encouraged the institution and enforcement of laws that prohibited child labor before certain ages.
I found that the progressives during these times were successful in making the governments stand up and take notice. I think they were able to help get these issues out and in the faces of government officials and citizens that ultimately sparked outrage against the harsh conditions.

This week the two subjects I chose to discuss are African Americans and Child workers. Throughout 1880-1914, many things arose and have caused changes within in these two groups being discussed. African Americans during this time were finally being able to gain new opportunities in the workforce, besides working on the land and farms. They were under the “push and pull” effect because in the South they were still under the scrutiny of racial hatred and the KKK, even though it was dismantled, they were still be targeted, leading to them being pushed out and but on the other spectrum, being pulled in by the North with the attraction of job opportunities with higher wages, a chance to vote and less violence against them as discussed by Corbett et al (2014). They began fleeing to the North to seek out jobs that were portrayed to be paying higher wages than in the South, ended up having a higher cost of living, leading to actually being paid either the same wage or even less after paying rent, food and other amenities that were needed. With what was said above, the economic gains did come at a cost, they did often find themselves living in overcrowded, filth filled conditions and encountering racial discrimination still. Through it all, they were given the freedom of choice, allowed more educational opportunities and a chance to build a better life in the North for themselves and/or for their family. The Industrial Revolution affected the African Americans by expanding their opportunities to migrate to the North to expand their knowledge and be able to profit, what little they could on their wages, to bring their families to the North to build a better life. The progressive reform for African American’s during this era helped promote social justice for African Americans by helping those who were affected by inequality. Booker T. Washington was a well-known Progressive that pushed for the civil rights of African American’s in this era. He made it a point to spread the message of social and economic growth, even with the immense amount of segregation within society, the promotion of increase awareness of African Americans for political and civil rights, leading to the political influences of the President Roosevelt and the development of NAACP by Du Bois, the progressive influence helped with going forward with staking a place in the new century, paving the road for future civil rights movements as discussed in Corbett et al. (2014).
Children were introduced into the workforce due to the new work processes that owners of factory’s were allowed, they were able to hire children to carry out many tasks within the factory, due to many being immigrants or children of immigrants, they were hired to fulfill the needs at a much lower cost, made to work long hours, even night shifts as discussed by Corbett et al. (2014). With the boom of the industrial revolution, the new factories being built, the need for workers increased. Children were the perfect candidates to be employed, they were often smaller in size, making it easier to have them attend to the minute tasks and as a child, they weren’t able to voice their opinions or concerns, not being able to fight back against their harsh working conditions as discussed by History.com Editors (2009). The industrial revolution affected children in an educational aspect, if they were working then they were not attending school, leading to children to be undereducated. With the Progressive reformers, they were able to bring the concern of safety in the workplace to develop political lobby groups to ensure safe workplaces, and pushed legislation to pass protective legislation for child labors as noted by Corbett et al. (2014). As noted by History.com Editors (2009), in the early 1900’s the development of the National Child Labor Committee with helped regulate child labor laws and eventually many laws were placed in restricting hours worked and limited the amount of work, this became known through state legislative as the progressive reform movement. I feel that the progressives helped in the reform of child labor and make the laws stricter and promote the educational needs of those children, by setting a certain amount hours children needed to attend school and when they could/couldn’t work.
