Sample Answer for NR 599 Week 1 Introductions Discussion
I was born in October. Not quite a Halloween baby but VERY close. As such, fall is my favorite time of year and I love all things goth, gore, and horror. My dad used to let me stay up late from a very early age and watch Elvira with him and many of the old classics like Frankenstein and Dracula. My mother always said I was a peculiar child! But I will take it. I turned out pretty good despite.
- What does informatics mean to you? Provide one detailed example.
Informatics is the data we use to diagnose and guide our care and the applications and technology systems throughout the health care system. For instance, we use Epic where I work. Epic collects the labs, scans, and extensive patient history all to the EHR for easy access. When a patient comes into my ER the first thing I look at is the patients Care Coordination. This tab shows me all the patients last visits with listing of service and chief complaint. By quickly viewing this I can get an idea if this is something the patient is seen for frequently or if it is potentially a new problem. I then can to a quick review of meds and past medical history. EHR’s are so common place that we take them for granted. Coming from a system that used Cerner, Epic is a dream. The continuity of care provider by being able to quickly scroll through Care Everywhere (allowing me to see medical history from all other health systems in our area that also use Epic) is an invaluable tool. Having this kind of technology allows us to get a better picture of the patients past medical journey which can help to develop an effective plan of care.
- What specifically about informatics do you want to learn in this course?
Informatics is a scary word. I am great at patient care and I am great at mastering the technology I need to deliver care. When I think informatics, I think data and numbers and confusing terms. That is not so much my thing and never has been. I suppose, for this course, developing a broader understanding of how informatics will apply to my advance practice without being terrified of the technical jazz is a good thing. So how I can use this in my day to day as an advanced practice nurse beyond just the basics of my job.
- Select one personal photograph which has significant meaning to you. Attach the photograph in JPEG or PDF format to the discussion forum AND provide a caption.
I chose this photo because my family would never give me permission to use their real likeness to strangers. But my family is the reason I went back to school and got a nursing degree. At that time, as a single mother recently divorced, I knew I never wanted to be in a position that I could not provide for my kids. I also hoped my kids would learn that no matter your circumstances, you can change your life if you apply yourself and do not give up. There are definitely days that I want to quit. But my family is all the reason I ever need to keep going.

My name is Oluwadunni Obasoto. I was born in December, in Nigeria, moved to the United States, got married and blessed with two boys. I started my nursing career when I relocated. I started nursing because initially I wanted a better life for me and my family. I first earned my Associate in nursing and proceeded to complete my bachelor’s in nursing in 2021. I have worked in homecare, long term care facility and medical surgical units. I am currently a local travel nurse. I want to increase my nursing knowledge, be more autonomy in my care and provide more evidence base practice care for my patients which is why I decided to continue my education.
I initially wanted to pursue Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, I started a per diem to get myself into the specialty, but I decided to pursue MSN Family Nurse Practitioner because it accommodates a broad spectrum of family-focused health care services to patients of all ages which is what fits my personality and also to give myself more opportunities to enjoy my career and proceed to achieve my goal for me and my family.
Informatics is the behind-the-scenes responsibilities of analyzing data to assess patient information and medical data. Informatics makes it possible to write, acknowledge and carry out orders. The ability to monitor staffing, workflow, and data will assist nurses in identifying areas where innovative approaches can be created. Nursing informatics is the computer information technology of health care. Information analysist function as a conduit between healthcare workers and technology.
I hope to acquire basic information on how to use evidence base practice to analyze information to improve my access to patients’ information, biography, finances provide visibility, affordable of medical bills, and education to transform patients’ health outcomes.
I included a personal video of myself because as a healthcare worker, mum, daughter, wife, sister, cousin or friend I have to constantly remind myself to take care of myself. A role I sometimes forget amidst all my other roles. As important as these roles are, to me the self-role is the most important because I cannot be any of the roles without the self-role. My patients, my family and friends are important, but I am important too.

Hello everyone. My name is Duana Hennings and I was born in the month of February. I currently live in Charlotte, North Carolina, 6 years ago I moved here from Buffalo, New York. Of course I am a HUGE Buffalo Bills fan and was super excited to see how far we went this season. We did not make it to the Super Bowl but I believe there is always next season. I am the mom of two beautiful young ladies. I love to travel and spend time with my spouse and our fur babies. I have been a nurse for almost 13 years. Currently I am the Agency Director for a home care agency. Some of my past experience includes travel nursing, cardiac telemetry, neurology, women’s health, mental health and long term care.
To me informatics is how I gather information, process that information and communicate or deliver that information to others. An example for me would be gathering data from a patient during an assessment. During the assessment I will gather objective and subjective information and then process this information in a way that I can communicate it to other members of the interdisciplinary team. I need to document my assessment findings in the chart or electronic medical record. From the information I gathered I may have identified the need for a medication refill. I would then electronically send the prescription information to the pharmacy to request a refill. I am excited to learn about the advancing technology and ways to improve healthcare through the integration of technology and health information.
Sample Answer 4 for NR 599 Week 1 Introductions Discussion
Nursing informatics is an area of nursing that melds data, information, knowledge, and wisdom to provide best care practices. What this means to me is it is a powerful tool that can be used to determine trends within my community, best evidence-based practices, past and present medical histories, workflow analysis, etc. Nursing informatics is important for bringing new technologies directly to patient care. For example, in my current position, I use patient data available at hospital discharge to determine their specific needs and alarming signs and symptoms to be aware of in the home.
I want to learn more, specifically from this course, how nursing informatics can be applied to my future practice as an FNP. I would also like to be more aware of the different systems available, when to use specific systems, and how to use specific systems. As a home health nurse, my knowledge of systems used by providers in a clinical setting is limited.

Hi everyone! My name is Brooke McCoy, I graduated with my BSN from West Virginia University Institute of Technology, now known as WVU Beckley, and have been a nurse for almost 3 years now. I started my nursing career on an intermediate/ICU stepdown unit which turned into one of my hospital’s designated COVID units about a month after I began working as a RN. So, to say I ended up diving in headfirst is probably an overstatement with how we all know how stressful and devastating the pandemic was for us healthcare workers. After two years of working on the COVID unit I started to develop burnout and needed a change, so I transferred to a cardiac unit where we care for patients having heart catheterizations, electrophysiology studies, pacemakers, ablations, etc. as well as CHF exacerbations, and other diagnoses that require close cardiac telemetry monitoring.
I was born in September in Charleston, WV where I still reside today. I have always been interested in becoming a FNP since I first decided to become a nurse. I have had many influential interactions with NPs throughout my life and was inspired by those NPs to one day become one of them in hopes to positively impact other people’s lives and help them achieve a high quality of life with good health just like they did for my family. In my spare time I enjoy reading, traveling, spending time with my family which includes caring for my grandparents, and relaxing at home with my dogs. Traveling wise, I have been up and down most of the east coast from Connecticut to Florida. My next couple of trips that I have coming up soon are to Houston, Texas to visit family and go to the rodeo, and to Walt Disney World with my oldest niece (7 years old). I have two dogs, Brutus and Hershey, both of which showed up to my house one day and decided to call it home, but I love them both dearly and it is safe to say that they are spoiled. On my days off, I take lunch to my grandparents and help them around the house with any chores that may need completed and to ensure that they are both staying active and healthy. I also have two nieces, 7 years old and 6 months old. They are both so sweet, but they sure do keep us on our toes, especially the little one who just started crawling last week!
I believe that informatics provides us as nurses with the ability to use technology to analyze data through evidence-based practice to develop better clinical practices so that patients are receiving a high quality of care and positive patient outcomes more efficiently. For example, the creation of telehealth allowed patients to gain better access to appointments with their providers without having to leave their homes. However, not all appointments can be conducted as telehealth appointments but if a patient were to develop an illness, minor injury, or concern they can have a telehealth appointment set up and their provider can diagnose and treat them over the phone or computer or if further assessment or testing need completed then they can request the patient to be seen in person. I feel like telehealth became more popular and extremely beneficial during the COVID pandemic when most of us were unable to leave our homes due to lockdown or fear of the virus. I am interested in learning more about how informatics is changing the health care system to better serve our patients to improve the quality of care they receive to achieve positive outcomes.
