How to Research and Prepare for NURS 6003 Using the Walden Library
Whether one passes or fails an academic assignment such as the Walden University NURS 6003 Using the Walden Library depends on the preparation done beforehand. The first thing to do once you receive an assignment is to quickly skim through the requirements. Once that is done, start going through the instructions one by one to clearly understand what the instructor wants. The most important thing here is to understand the required format—whether it is APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.
After understanding the requirements of the paper, the next phase is to gather relevant materials. The first place to start the research process is the weekly resources. Go through the resources provided in the instructions to determine which ones fit the assignment. After reviewing the provided resources, use the university library to search for additional resources. After gathering sufficient and necessary resources, you are now ready to start drafting your paper.

Carefully examine the rubric, as it will contain all the detailed requirements of the assignment. Sometimes, the rubric will have information that the normal instructions lack.
Another important factor to consider at this point is how to do citations. In-text citations are fundamental as they support the arguments and points you make in the paper. At this point, the resources gathered at the beginning will come in handy. Integrating the ideas of the authors with your own will ensure that you produce a comprehensive paper. Also, follow the given citation format. In most cases, APA 7 is the preferred format for nursing assignments.

Sample Answer for NURS 6003 Using the Walden Library
My goal as an MSN student is to one day become an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. The peer-review article I chose is titled “Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Students’ Perceptions of a Debriefing Experience After a Cardiac Emergency High-Fidelity Simulation: A Qualitative Study” (2021). This article can be found in AACN Advanced Critical Care, a journal published by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (2021). As nurses advance their role to becoming acute care nurse practitioners, they need specialized training to prepare them. This study uses a qualitative approach to explore students’ perceptions on whether simulation on emergent situations and debriefing experiences would grow their leadership-related learning abilities (Ali et al., 2021).
Because online search databases typically contain only abstracts, I found it difficult to locate a peer-reviewed journal article in its entirety unless subscribed to that database. Also, after using Walden’s database, I had a hard time locating an article that was recently published, and pertinent to advanced practice nursing in a critical care setting. I am a member of AACN and I have utilized its evidence-based resources for many purposes throughout my career. Experts explain that evidence-based practice is the integration of individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research (Al-Jundi & Sakka, 2017). The AACN is a useful database for students and professionals because it is a professional organization that provides peer-reviewed research that is evidence-based as well as carefully evaluated healthcare information by the guidance of fully qualified experts. This database also includes research and data services that are centered around baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs.
The “AACN Scope and Standards for Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Practice” describes and measures the expected level of practice and professional performance for acute care nurse practitioners and offers a practical tool for students, educators, and advanced practice nurses caring for high acuity or critically ill patients and their families (AACN, 2021). Therefore, I would recommend this database to my colleagues who have a goal is becoming an acute care nurse practitioner one day.

Enablers, Barriers, and Contributions of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners to Ambulatory
Specialty Care
According to Dana Hinders in her online article Plagiarism Statistics, a key component to writing a paper and having information to back up your thoughts is the use of articles, journals, online documents and much more (2006). Often, we gather information from the internet, that may or may not be true. If the information is true, the next issue we run into is, is the information from a credible source. You can almost compare this to gossip, do you want your gossip from a credible source or just he says she say word of mouth and might not be true. Many companies or researchers use databases to “provide an efficient way to store, retrieve and analyze data” (Writer, 2016).
In high school and even college we learned about the use of the online database in the library that provided us with peer reviewed articles and scholarly journals. I honestly have not used the database in sometime, so I phoned a friend for help. I consider this person an academic and professional resource, my friend and coworker Cody. While unsure how to navigate through the database, Cody provided me with several other resources to help me, that he himself found extremely helpful during his FNP program. Cody referred Pubmed, Cochrane Reviews and TMC Library which had a branch of other resources provided. I began to play around with Walden’s library and online database where I came across the academic journal Enablers, Barriers, and Contributions of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners to Ambulatory Specialty Care. I experienced some difficulty when trying to find an article that related to my area of practice because there were so many options to choose from. Being specific can help narrow down your search. I initially just typed in pediatric nursing and so many articles and journals populated ranging from pediatric nursing during Covid-19 to pediatric nursing related to multisystem inflammatory syndrome. To home in on pediatric nurse practitioners, I then input exactly that and got journals and articles about a pediatric NP’s job consisted of or the autonomy and collaboration a pediatric NP may deal with. Many of the articles I found through the Walden library database were from EBSCO. I do believe that EBSCO can be good for my classmates or colleagues when researching data regarding our current course of studies or even to help further knowledge for personal bases. I found the information on the database to be informative in many aspects and especially when searching for controlled and uncontrolled variables in research.
As stated previously in part 3 of the writing assignment with a lack of academic integrity can cause a lack of professional practice due to being unknowledgeable. According to the research of Winters, Matsuda, Stephen and Chapman (2021), “Education was a key component of direct care, which participants perceived as adding value to the care they provided”. It is especially important that you are educated and up to date as much as possible as many views patient teaching and the patient’s receptiveness and understanding to learning as a key component. If I patient is properly educated this can help with prevention of readmissions or a progressive illness that could lead to fatality.

Paige,
I agree with your discussion. It can be easier and tempting to “google” something to try to find information. However, as you mentioned, you cannot always guarantee the information is from credible sources. Because of this, it is critical that healthcare providers are proficient in literature searches, databases, and critical appraisal of research. Scholarly writing is evidence-based (Laureate Education, 2018a), can assist with clinical decision making, and furthers nursing science (Laureate Education, 2018b).
Starting a literature search can be intimidating, especially if it has been a while since using a database. My favorite nursing databases are CINAHL Plus with full text, MEDLINE with full text, Embase, ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Database, and PubMed. When searching the databases, it is helpful to use keywords and alternates of keywords and Boolean Operators to connect them and narrow down your search (Walden University Library, n.d.). You can also narrow down article searches to pediatrics by applying age group limiters.

Paige,
I appreciate you sharing that you experienced difficulties finding a relatable article due to the wide array of options available to choose from. I too encountered this problem and strongly agree that being specific in your search can help narrow down the number of articles that are specific to the topic you are searching for. The database that I personally used to search for my article was Ebscohost, which “offers high-quality articles licensed from reputable publishers recognized by library professionals” (Ebsco Information Services, Inc., n.d.). Ebscohost made it easy to insert key words to guide my search, which I found to be a great feature that significantly narrowed down the articles according to the search criteria. Limiting the search to only include the most pertinent articles enabled me to find a great evidence-based journal article that I could possibly incorporate in the future in order to achieve scholarly writing which should always be evidence-based, clear, concise, and objective (Laureate Education, 2018).

Advanced Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice
The area of practice that is interesting to me is the advanced practice in psychiatric and mental health nursing. This area of nursing is very specialized and a huge need across the nation. Upon beginning this research, it is a very essential skill as an advanced practice nurse to be able to identify and appraise the best available evidence-based research. It is vital as a nurse to be able to assess the credibility of articles that are researched to be able to incorporate them within your own clinical experiences and practices (Al-Jundi & Sakka, 2017). The research engine that I utilized in the Walden University Library is EBSCO. EBSCO has been recognized as one of the top research databases, e-journals, magazines, e-books, and subscription services to libraries of all kinds. They are aligned with other libraries to help improve the quality of their content and technology (About EBSCO: EBSCO, n.d.). I think this database would be very useful for both students and future colleagues. This database has developed a large search engine to provide the most information possible for evidence-based research.
According to this article I found, it has been noted that the research specific for psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNP) is limited due to it being a subgroup of the broader advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) (Phoenix & Chapman, 2020). Until recently, the amount of PMHNP programs have grown over the last 10 years. This is a significant rise; behavioral health systems are now hiring more PMHNPs due to the need for providers to treat patients and prescribe their medications (Phoenix & Chapman, 2020). Due to the need in this field and my passion to care for mental health patients is why I chose this field to practice.

I can totally agree about the use of EBSCO. What i found to be troublesome was an overload of articles that populated after searching. I noticed when searching being very specific and using key words can also help eliminate the overload of the database population. In your discussion you mentioned that according to Phoenix and Chapman (2020), ” the research specific for psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNP) is limited due to it being a subgroup of the broader advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs)”. I can definitely see that being true due to the fact that Mental Health has been around but it is becoming more of a less taboo topic to speak on. Compared to 10-20 years ago, you can find many of your friends, family and colleageaus speaking about their own personal experiences with mental health or even just the importance of knowing how to deal with one whom suffers with a mental health illness.

I also used Ebsco to guide the search for my article and strongly agree that it is an incredible database that provides reliable, evidence-based, scholarly information. I was led to Ebsco through the use of Walden’s library which incorporates an online database that includes a “searchable digital collection of different types of materials such as books, journals, magazines, and newspapers” (Walden University, n.d.). I found Ebsco to have a wide variety of objective articles that related to my specific topic and encompassed the key words that I used in the search. As students at Walden we are expected to partake in scholarly writing and in order to be successful we must be able to identify evidence-based research
and demonstrate the information objectively to an academic audience (Laureate Education, 2018). I believe that Ebsco will make scholarly writing a more feasible task and thus is a valuable tool to keep in our back pocket through our graduate studies at Walden.

Sample Answer 6 for NURS 6003 Using the Walden Library
My area of interest is mental health among healthcare workers especially after the wake of Covid-19, a pandemic that had devastating effects on the psychological wellness of healthcare workers and the communities. The severity of the epidemic and the associated uncertainties increased anxiety and fear substantially leading to mental health issues (Smallwood & Willis, 2021). My selected study is “Mental Health Impact on Healthcare Workers Due to The COVID-19 Pandemic: A U.S. Cross-Sectional Survey Study” by Biber et al. (2022). This article investigates the mental health impacts caused by the Covid-19 pandemic using a sample of ambulatory healthcare workers including clinicians and support staff from three healthcare organizations.
I identified this article in the PubMed Central database, an index that contains millions of research articles on health and allied sciences. To find the article, I visited several databases including Google Scholar, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Medline which are nursing databases. This was one of the major challenges since I had to search across several databases and review multiple articles. Importantly, I intended to find a primary research article with first hand data. This was substantially challenging since most of the articles addressing the issue of healthcare workers’ mental wellness during Covid19 are mainly reviews. Another challenge was the high number of articles on the topic making it hard to narrow down to one article.
The PubMed Central database is an important tool for healthcare workers and students interested in research work. This database provides access to a myriad of research articles on different topics and issues in healthcare. This makes it reliable for research work. I would recommend this database because it has multiple research articles and is easy to use. The availability of the search filter function helps scholars to narrow down their search results by date and type of publication. This function improves the quality of research significantly.
Many would seem to agree that medical marijuana has no home in the health care system. I am not one of those people. Moving into a higher place of education, I foresee myself being able to advocate for medicinal marijuana being part of a normal regime for a patient, under the right circumstances. This topic has been particularly interesting to me even before I began my career in the nursing field. Before nursing, I was in the health and wellness field and often found myself recommending recreational marijuana as an aid for total body recovery after a long strength training session. I have been deeply inspired by the amount of peer-reviewed articles I have discovered for this cause.
I have chosen an article geared towards using cannabinoids and marijuana as a resource for treatment. Stephanie Lusk and Tanya Rutherford dive into pharmacology of marijuana and the receptors we have in response to the use of cannabinoids in “The Inclusion of Cannabinoids and Medical Marijuana as a Treatment Option for Individuals with Disabilities and Life Care Plans.” I found this article to be insightful for the individuals who may be against medicinal marijuana. Stephanie and Tanya talk about how chronic pain, as well as psychiatric disorders such as PTSD can gain an improvement in sleep quality with marijuana use.
While researching this interest of mine I started with Google. Mainly to ensure that what I was looking for would not be something far-fetched. I found the difficulty for this search to be that there are a vast number of articles about how great marijuana is, and the benefits of it. Many are written as an opinion or personal experience. I then used the Walden University Library to search for peer-reviewed articles and journals covering this topic. I would highly recommend using the Walden Library to my colleague as a primary resource, it eliminated any additional articles that may have contained false information. Ultimately my search through the library took me to the CIHNAHL Database website. It was found to be very user-friendly, and I was able to pull up many legitimate articles that talked about medicinal marijuana use for different topics like stress, anxiety, depression, cancer, and even how it can affect anesthesia.

I was very intrigued by your interest in dermatology and pursuing your family nurse practitioner certificate about therapies or treatments for aging skin. Although my interest is in mental health, I am deeply interested in clean beauty and in joining my daughter, who is passionate about ageless beauty using natural therapies.
Interestingly, one can use the library resources at Walden (Walden University Library, n.d.a) to find specialty-related peer-reviewed articles that can advance our personal and professional interests. For example, in searching for my current interest area of depression and anxiety among students in historically Black colleges and universities, I was able to go to the CINAHL Plus with Full-Text database (Walden University Library, n.d.a) and quickly find a peer-reviewed article on this topic.
While I agree with your chosen database, I would also share the research fundamentals website as a fantastic resource at the Walden library (Walden University Library, n.d.b), where you can go through modules to get a complete overview of how to search the databases and how to use Boolean operators to find precisely what you want. I also suggest you use CINAHL Plus with a Full-Text database to go directly to full-text articles on your subject of interest and search public databases.
As a nurse, I believe that going directly to a database that provides peer-reviewed articles with a nursing focus would be very helpful in my search for subject areas in the field of nursing. As such, I will also add the database you used, “ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health” (Walden University Library, n.d.a). from the Walden University database as a valuable tool in my future research resources.

For this week’s discussion, I utilized the tutorial in our assigned reading to navigate the Walden University Library, which I found helpful (Walden University, n.d.). Using reliable sources in scholarly writing is critical in swaying the audience of the main points in any paper. Peer-reviewed publications must be advised for graduate-level work since they have completed a reliable review procedure. (Walden University, n.d.).
My practice area is psychiatric/mental health. I am interested in the benefits of using Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP) in Public Behavioral Health. The peer-reviewed article I have selected for this discussion and one that relates to my practice area is by Chapman et al. (2018) titled Utilization and Economic Contribution of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners in Public Behavioral Health Services. The keywords psychiatric nurse practitioner utilization was typed into the Walden Library’s Research by Subject area. Next, I clicked the drop-down icon and selected Nursing as the specialty where I wanted to search for pertinent research articles. To begin researching relevant articles, I used the abovementioned keywords, psychiatric nurse practitioner utilization. A list of articles populated from the Thoreau/EBSCO search engine in the (Walden University Library, n.d.).
I encountered no difficulties locating my peer-reviewed article and found this database very useful. The database would be helpful for my colleagues because the articles that are made available are peer-reviewed and adequate for MSN research requirements. EBSCO databases can be found on the Walden Library’s webpage under Databases A-Z. EBSCO Discovery Service offers a comprehensive compilation of over 3.7 billion titles from top publishers and providers of information in the world with Full Text. (Chapman et al., 2018).
I would recommend both search engines to my colleagues in the MSN program. Thoreau is useful for graduate research and includes many databases such as SAGE Journals, Science Direct, and Soc INDEX. One of the benefits of using Thoreau is the availability of full-text articles. I have used Google searches and found peer-reviewed articles, but they only offer the abstract section and not the full article. Articles offered in the Walden Library are generally full text, giving users a full display of the information in the article. In summary, using the Walden library was very helpful in that it was easy to navigate and helps brings about research articles that are free from bias and exclusively focused on data collected through research.
