NRS 450 Nursing Informatics

The course will focus on technologies and methods utilized in the acquisition, processing and analysis of patient information. Also, the course will emphasize communication and information technologies that promote documenting care and communicating effectively with other healthcare practitioners at all system levels. Upon completion, students will understand the relevance of ethical and professional standards that pertain to security and regulation of health data.

Topic 1: Nursing Informatics, Health Care Technologies, and Information Systems

Class Introductions

This course will begin with class introductions where students will share what they are excited to learn in the course, and areas they think will challenge them.

Topic 1 DQ 1

In this assessment, students will use the first letter of their first name to determine their group number. There will be four groups, and each group should define assigned healthcare terms and discuss their importance to the nursing practice.

The initial discussion post should contain 200 words, while the student response should be 100-150 words.

Students should refer to the RN-BSN rubric before making their initial posts and responses.

Topic 1 DQ 2

The assessment will involve selecting a clinical scenario from one’s practice and analyzing it with the Foundation of Knowledge Model.

The paper will break down the model by explaining the data collection process, describing the information collected, explaining the knowledge acquired in the scenario and conducting an analysis of the information collected. Also, it will require the student to explain what wisdom was discovered, if they had to share the new knowledge and what feedback they received.

Topic 2: Ethical, Legal, and Regulatory Standards for Health Information

Topic 2 DQ 1

The assignment will review Carol’s case scenario and answer the provided questions.

The paper requires the student to analyze the professional roles for the ethical utilization of healthcare informatics technology. It will also refer to Carol’s case and discuss the ethical challenges she faced and the principles that she violated. Lastly, the paper will describe how one would handle the case in their practice while highlighting one thing that could have been handled differently.

Topic 2 DQ 2

The paper should identify basic concepts of telehealth systems, mobile health and electronic health records that enable the delivery of patient care. It should also explain the effect of integration, interoperability and health information exchange on telehealth, mobile health and EHR to offer patients the best outcomes.

The assessment will require students to identify the communication and information technologies they utilize in their scope of practice while explaining how they use them.

Topic 3: Methods and Technologies for Security, Safety, Collaboration, and Quality

Topic 3 DQ 1

The assessment emphasizes the need for healthcare systems to take precautions and safeguard the availability, integrity and confidentiality of patient information. Some of the actions that can be taken include complying with bodies such as HITECH and HIPAA.

Students should respond to three prompts. The first prompt should describe the procedures that healthcare facilities can utilize to safeguard electronic information in a computer network. The second prompt should evaluate the potential effects of cyber attacks on healthcare facilities’ financial resources, clinical outcomes, and patient privacy. The last prompt will identify different user authentication techniques that can be used to secure and protect a healthcare facility’s network.

Topic 3 DQ 2

The assessment will focus on the role of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) in encouraging partnerships across various disciplines when looking for solutions that foster a culture of safe patient care. The partnership should incorporate informatics in the interprofessional team. The paper will require learners to reflect on a recent patient case and discuss three interaction tools that were utilized to offer quality care. It will also explain how the communication tools helped the team to make decisions for the patient. Finally, the paper will give one example of how technology use can be improved in this case.

Topic 4: Nursing Informatics for Clinical Decision-Making and Promotion of Health Equity

Topic 4 DQ 1

This assessment will describe the effect of policies on population outcomes such as health equity and social justice. The students will be required to choose one policy that addresses health equity, social justice and population outcomes. The paper will finally recommend a communication platform that can be used to share information with stakeholders.

Topic 4 DQ 2

The assignment will explain the role played by communication technology in the enhancement of clinical information flows. It will also highlight three contemporary communication technologies utilized in acute care centers. The paper will also discuss how machine learning and artificial intelligence have changed the functionality of communication technology platforms.

Topic 5: Informatics Tools for Continuing Education and Professional Development

The assessment should summarize how professional nursing facilities utilize technology to grow the networking abilities of nurses. The paper should also describe two emerging technologies that have changed the way nurses access professional development opportunities and educational advancement. Finally, the paper will determine how nurses can utilize technology for patient advocacy in the nursing profession.

Topic 5 DQ 2

The assessment will begin by describing how lifelong education helps nurses stay updated on the latest best practices and medical advances. The paper should also explain how emerging nursing fields like informatics help in growing nurses’ competency and patient safety. It will also identify various challenges that nurses encounter in lifelong learning. Lastly, the paper will suggest ways through which nurses can overcome the challenges.

Informatics Education Plan

The assessment requires students to create a professional development plan with the help of innovative learning tools to help educate the staff on important care topics to enhance patient well-being.

Students will review the provided scenario to complete parts 1 and 2 of the assessment.

For part one, students will develop a slide presentation of their education plan.

Part 2 of the assignment will require students to use part one’s presentation to create a 3-5 minute video of their education plan.

The assignment also requires students to put the video link on the introduction slide and in the speaker notes.
