NUR 550 Translational Research and Population Health Management

In this course, students will examine the procedure of scientific inquiry, generation of knowledge, utilization, and distribution of evidence in advanced nursing practice to suggest quality-improvement initiatives that improve the delivery of high-quality and safe care to patient populations. Students will be required to critically analyze evidence such as scientific findings from genomics, genetics, biostatistics, epidemiology, and biopsychosocial fields.

The scientific findings will also be utilized to apply levels of theoretical and evidence frameworks to curate population-oriented care and culturally suitable clinical prevention interventions that prevent diseases and reduce risks in the nursing profession. The findings will also aid in fostering the population’s health and well-being. Markedly, students will be required to consider strategies that examine health advocacy and policy issues. These issues include the reduction of risk for diverse populations, health promotion, ethical principles relating to health beliefs, patient-centered care, and the state of healthcare delivery. Learners will also use these course strategies to recognize gaps in nursing and healthcare knowledge, identify potential innovations or solutions for the gaps, plan and implement practice changes, and finally analyze the findings in order to grow the practice.

Students must first complete NUR-513 and NUR-514 before taking this course.

Topic 1: Quality Research and Theoretical Frameworks

Topic 1 DQ 1

The assessment will entail identifying various levels of translational research. The paper should differentiate between evidence-based practice and translational research. Also, it should discuss how translational research and EBP can be applied to population health management.

Topic 1 DQ 2

The assignment requires students to utilize the GCU library to identify a journal, database, or other resources that explore translational research. The learner will also choose a health problem from past studies and identify the kind of translational research utilized. Lastly, the student will explain their rationale for choosing that type of translational research.

Topic 2: Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Genetics, and Genomics

Topic 2 DQ 1

The assessment will explain the need for biostatistics in population health studies. The paper will also describe the role played by epidemiology when addressing or studying population health issues. It will also explain the significance of biostatistics and epidemiology to one’s evidence-based practice proposal.

Topic 2 DQ 2

The assessment will focus on genomics, principles of genetics, social departments of health, global and ecological issues. The paper should explain the application of translational research in the areas mentioned above to handle the global disease issue.

Topic 3: Translational Research Framework and Legal and Ethical Considerations

Topic 3 DQ 1

The assignment should discuss the ethical guidelines that one needs to implement when conducting a translational study. The paper will identify legal and ethical considerations that relate to translating a study into practice. It will also discuss the steps that a researcher would take to determine ethical guidelines pertaining to their translational research.

Topic 3 DQ 2

The assessment will first discuss the role played by the IRB. The paper will further discuss ethical study considerations that specifically relate to population health. Moreover, the paper will analyze various research aspects such as respect for people, potential burdens and benefits of the study, and how the researcher keeps justice in balance. Lastly, the student will be required to provide an example to support their argument.

Topic 4: Critical Appraisal of Research

Topic 4 DQ 1

The assignment will provide the difference between validity and reliability in research design. The paper will require students to use a translational study article from their graphic organizer, evaluate the methodology and findings sections, and discuss validity and reliability as they relate to the research.

Students should ensure that the article reference has a permalink.

Topic 4 DQ 2

The assignment will first identify a data collection tool that one could use in their research. The students should consider how they can apply translational research to overcome data collection barriers. The paper should also determine the most appropriate translational research type to address the data collection barrier and the rationale for the choice taken. Lastly, students will identify strategies that they would use to provide knowledge on the translational research type used, collect collaborative support, and uphold the integrity of translational research.

Topic 5: Translating Evidence Into Practice to Improve Safety and Quality and Eliminate Barriers

Topic 5 DQ 1

The assignment should identify a quality or safety improvement initiative that relates to the growth of population health. The paper should also explain how translational study can influence the development of the selected improvement initiative.

In response, students should use a specific example.

Topic 5 DQ 2

The paper will require students to identify a quality initiative from their workplace. In addition, the paper will identify barriers that hindered the initiative’s implementation. Lastly, students will outline common barriers that occur when translating research into practice.

Topic 6: Quality Improvement Initiatives and Clinical Prevention Intervention

Topic 6 DQ 1

The assessment entails the evaluation of a clinical preventive intervention built to foster wellness and health for populations. Students will be needed to provide a summary of the intervention and ascertain its success.

Topic 6 DQ 2

The paper will discuss the integration of communication technologies and appropriate information for intervention selected in DQ1 to grow the nursing practice and care provision for populations and persons.  

Topic 7: Policies Affecting Practice and State of Health Care Delivery

Topic 7 DQ 1

The assessment should identify two main policy issues that currently impact population health equity and health care delivery in the US. The paper will also explain the effect that health initiatives and policies have on advanced nursing practice.

Topic 7 DQ 2

This assessment requires students to choose an effective current health policy that impacts population health. The paper will also identify effective components of the policy, its history, and why it was developed.

Topic 8: Using Research to Support Health Policy, Advocacy, and Policy Development

Topic 8 DQ 1

The paper will discuss the role played by translational studies in improving equitable healthcare access and policies with reference to population health. Students will also identify a local healthcare policy that is awaiting legislative passage or has been enacted and was influenced by a study.

Topic 8 DQ 2

The assessment requires students to discuss the role they will play in advocacy for equitable population health policies and services. The paper should also highlight the challenges that students anticipate in population advocacy and how they can be handled.
