Teamwork is a core element of the healthcare industry. Multidisciplinary teams allow for multiple approaches and ideas, less error, and a more holistic approach to treating and caring for patients. I currently work as a RN at a medical aesthetics and wellness center. Our team consists of two nurse practitioners, one PA, a board-certified plastic surgeon, a medical assistant, and an esthetician. Having a multi disciplinary team allows for a smooth flow of the office as soon as the patient enters the office, gets treated, and walks out the door. Part of my job is to assist and collaborate with the nurse practitioners to make sure the patient is receiving safe and quality care. I collaborate with the APRN’s on patients who are in the office for medical weight loss with GLP-1 medications and provide consultations, while the APRN orders thorough blood work screening. When the patient is cleared to start the medication, I administer the medication. I also perform IV therapy, microneedling with plasma, Coolsculpting, and venipuncture for hormone therapy. The medical assistant assigns the patients intake forms and consents, numbs the patient with topical lidocaine if needed, and helps me prepare the treatment room and supplies. If a patient is interested in invasive surgical treatments, I refer them to our plastic surgeon for a consultation. Every member of the team plays a vital role in the patient experience and leads to a positive outcome for the patient. If one member of the team is not completing their tasks, mistakes may happen and things may be missed. Having established roles and responsibilities is crucial for the practice and team environment.
Effective teamwork long-term must start with exemplary leadership. Successful leadership pushes team members to reach their full potential, ensures team actions are understood, important information is relayed, and team members have the resources they need to thrive (Rosen et al., 2019). Team members must also provide mutual respect and support for each other by understanding each other’s role and responsibilities and anticipate each other’s needs (Rosen et al., 2019). Lastly, communication and interpersonal skills is extremely important in a team health setting. Team members must be able to communicate with patients, the community, families, and other health care workers in a responsive manner that supports the approach of health maintenance, promotion and prevention (Rosen et al., 2019). Members who demonstrate compassion, honesty, integrity, welcome constructive criticism and feedback, and create positive relationships possess the competencies needed to foster a successful team environment (Rosen et al., 2019).
Ineffective teamwork occurs when members dismiss others ideas and information (Zajace et al., 2021). Personal attacks during disagreements, not engaging in open and constructive communication, and lack of respect and support may all lead to a negative environment (Zajace et al., 2021). Additionally, in health care settings where an interdisciplinary approach exists, it is important to establish clear roles. For example, in a setting where there is a physician and an APRN, there might be issues between the providers and the practice if there are no set protocols and scope of practice regulations as to what both can do. In hospitals where the nurse and physician work together, if there is not proper communication, trust, and consideration, this can lead to unsafe and uncoordinated care that places the patient at risk and errors can occur.

Factors Contributing to the Effectiveness or Ineffectiveness of a Team
With four years of experience in the clinical area, collaboration across multiple disciplines and teamwork play a critical role in providing patient care. Teamwork practices help health workers thrive in emergencies. Teamwork is integrated into every corner of the patient’s care, whether the nurse is working directly or indirectly with the housekeeper who maintains the cleanliness of the trauma area or the physician discussing the care plan with the patient (Samico & Miguel, 2019). A friendly and clean environment and proper imaging make patients trust healthcare providers. An established role enables everyone involved in the care of patients to participate effectively. In an accident and emergency room, roles are executed into a primary nurse, who takes the history of a patient; a nurse who performs procedures like catheter insertion; a nurse who gives medication to the casualties as they are being ordered; and a specialist who is constantly making casualties comfortable.
Effectiveness in teamwork will involve collaboration and effective communication with the goal of patient care. Effective communication of diagnostic test results helps bridge the gap in patient care. The healthcare system should have a common goal and objectives for the patient’s care (Roy et al., 2020). when everyone is working towards the objectives, it helps to coordinate resources and effort efficiently, thus minimizing the action conflict and promoting quality care for the patient. When team members work towards one common goal and objective, and there is a connection between their efforts, they are motivated and committed. One common goal is to create a sense of accountability, and team members have responsibilities for their contributions and tasks. The healthcare environment is dynamic, and everyone should be ready to adapt to changes for effectiveness in the system. Approaches may be adjusted depending on the unexpected outcome or emerging information. The healthcare field is evolving daily, and individuals must keep updated and committed to ongoing education. Effectiveness in the team will also be based on the prioritization of parties, such that the healthcare team will consider patients’ preferences and engage them in the decision-making process.
On the other hand, ineffective teams need better communication skills. Patients have adverse outcomes, and poor-quality patient care results from poor teamwork. Historically, there has been a major issue of nurses and physicians having poor communication, resulting in a hard-working environment and poor patient services (Samico & Miguel, 2019). Lack of continuous learning results in practices that are not up-to-date, which may lead to care being given that is not of high quality. When the healthcare provider prioritizes the patient’s preferences, the quality of care is maintained. Clarity may arise when it is evident in roles and responsibilities, hindering the effectiveness of care delivery. In the healthcare system, new technologies emerge continually. If the team resists the changes, it may need help to provide current and quality care. Lack of proper skills may result in low-quality care for the patient and, thus, poor outcomes. Continuous education and implementation of evidence-based practices will create an environment that promotes teamwork between healthcare providers and patients across multiple disciplines.
