DNP-805A-Health Care Informatics 

The course will provide foundations used in technology/information systems to improve and support healthcare systems and patient care. Also, the course is curated to provide students with various tools required to manage personal and aggregate level information and utilize technology to evaluate care systems, outcomes and care programs using industry standards and related legal, regulatory and ethical principles. Students must synthesize and integrate core program competency and specialty practice needs to show proficiency in advanced nursing practice.

Students should have completed DNAP-801A before doing this course.

Topic 1: Introduction to Healthcare Informatics: Language and Theories of Informatics

Class Introductions

Students should make their initial post introducing themselves to peers while stating what they expect to be exciting or challenging in the course.

Topic 1 DQ 1

The assessment will involve selecting a healthcare technology-related law that applies to informatics. Students will then summarize their example and explain if they support it or not and why. In their summary, students should consider the relationship between Christian worldviews and ethical standards.

Topic 1 DQ 2

The assignment involves selecting one informatics theory from human factors, change theories, and communication theories. The paper should also discuss how applying the selected theory can guide the utilization of technology in advanced practice.

Topic 2: Health Care Technologies

Emerging Technologies

The assignment will require students to create a PPT presentation for administrators and nurses who provide direct patient care. The presentation will identify and describe a clinical problem and a technology to solve the problem. The student will also select a theory to guide the presentation and explain the relevance of its application. It will also address how the technology will solve the clinical issue. Moreover, it will discuss the potential limitations and strengths of the selected technology. Lastly, it will discuss the techniques used to educate patients on how to use the technology.

The paper should have 12-15 slides formatted in APA guidelines.

Topic 2 DQ 1

The paper will discuss the relevance of EHR and its effect on quality outcomes and patient safety. It will also describe the limitations and strengths of its utilization.

Topic 2 DQ 2

Students should assume the role of a DNP in a new leadership position. Also, they will evaluate the new practice’s workflow to ascertain how EHR can be incorporated to enhance communication and patient care. The paper will also identify elements that one should consider if their new position is in a magnet acute-care facility in a busy metropolitan area. The student will also explain how their practice would change if they worked in a rural, regional clinic system.

Topic 3: Computer Provider Order Entry (CPOE) Systems and Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS)

Using CPOE and CDSS

In this assignment, students will choose a clinical practice problem relating to a specific medication. Then, they will use a CPOE to create a CDSS incorporated into the EHR at their practice.

The requirement is that the CDSS must work with the CPOE to include medication.

The paper will be 1000-1250 words.

Topic 3 DQ 1

The assessment will describe how CPOE and CDSS embedded in EHR can be helpful for a specific patient population. It will also identify an element of the CDSS or CPOE that one could improve to enhance its effectiveness for the selected patient population.

Topic 3 DQ 2

Students will be required to choose a specific clinical issue or medication. Then, they will describe how the CDSS/CPOE technology supports patient care decisions in the area.

Topic 4: Database Design

Topic 4 DQ 1

In this assignment, students will select a specific patient population, such as people with diabetes above 65. Students will then list elements that they deem valuable for the database. Then, they will describe the components and explain all terms of different data types. If they determine that one element can be more than one data type, they should explain their reasoning.

In response, students should post elements different from those posted by their peers.

Topic 4 DQ 2

The paper should discuss the integration data needed from the selected patient population in DQ1. It should also explain how the EHR database could facilitate this integration between administration and clinical systems.  

Topic 5: Data Mining

Topic 5 DQ 1

In this assignment, learners should select a specific clinical issue and post a clinical question that can be answered using data mining. It should also identify data mining methods that one can apply to solve the problem and the rationale used. Students will also explain if there are data mining methods they wouldn’t use and why.

Topic 5 DQ 2

In this paper, students will use the previously posted question in DQ1 to determine the individual components of the question while pinpointing the location in the hypothetical database that the information can be extracted.

Topic 6: Telehealth

Topic 6 DQ 1

The assessment will refer to a scenario whereby a patient is discharged home to use telehealth technology. Students will post the technology to be used by the patient and explain how they will connect with the patient using the technology.

Topic 6 DQ 2

The paper will evaluate current implementation strategies for telehealth systems and assess their pros and cons. It will also identify a specific practice area and discuss how a healthcare leader can implement the approach.

Topic 7: Trends in Informatics: Global and Consumer Informatics

Topic 7 DQ 1

The assignment will describe one technology that one uses daily and thoroughly likes. It will further identify the technology’s features that make it easy to utilize. Students will finally name a technology they would change to improve how it functions and meet nursing practice needs.

Topic 7 DQ 2

In this assignment, students will choose a technology they use daily and dislike. It will also outline the features of the technology that make it undesirable. Lastly, students will identify an element of the technology they can change to improve its functionality.

Topic 8: Evaluation of Technology in Human-Computer Interaction

Topic 8 DQ 1

The assessment will require students to focus on a particular patient population and choose a technology that could grow patient outcomes and engagement in their future practice. Markedly, students will identify elements of the technology they find valuable and how to improve it.

Topic 8 DQ 2

Students will describe how they can apply healthcare technology options to create a plan to manage a patient from acute care to home care and then into society. Further, students should identify the cultural, societal or organizational factors that might affect their plan and how they could address them.
