DNP 815 Scientific Underpinnings Syllabus
The course will create a base for applying science to ANP while including historical and ethical foundations. Students will be expected to synthesize and integrate core program competencies and specialty practice needs necessary to show proficiency in advanced nursing practice in the DNP practice immersion workplace. Also, students will be required to record a minimum of 50 practice hours divided into 25 indirect and 25 direct. They will also offer 50 hours of practicum.
Students must have completed DNP-810A.
Topic 1: Worldview and Foundations of Nursing Sciences
Class Introductions
Students will make their initial post whereby they acquaint themselves with peers.
Reflective Analysis Case Report Component Paper
In this paper, learners will be required to create a reflective analysis that incorporates a personal nursing philosophy. Students are allowed to write the paper in the first person.

The paper will be 1000-1250 words and will cover various elements, such as the student’s central belief about the person. It will also explain how learner’s worldviews affect their approach to patients. Further, it will explain what constitutes the environment, how people interact with their surroundings, student’s view of health, and how illness relates to health. Students will also explain how nurse leaders can serve people and foster human flourishing. Finally, it will explain the central reason why nursing exists.
The paper should refer to the rubric, provide peer-reviewed evidence, and follow APA guidelines.
Topic 1 DQ 1
In this assessment, students will read the “Discussion Forum Philosophy” and then define the procedure of theory building. The paper will also identify a historical event that had a significant effect on the development of nursing theory. It will further discuss the impact of the change to nursing, the contributions to nursing, and how it associates now with preparing DNPs for practice.
Topic 1 DQ 2
The paper will require students to select a nursing theory that they will utilize to guide their DNP project. They will also define the nursing theory while explaining its role and contribution to the nursing profession and how it will guide their project.
Topic 2: Nursing Theory – Guided Practice
Topic 2 DQ 1
The assignment should discuss the differences in approach as pertains to deductive and inductive reasoning.
Students should always provide examples and literature to support their claims.
Topic 2 DQ 2
In this paper, students will select a nursing theory from the Philosophies and Theories for Advanced Nursing textbook to use for their DNP Project. It will also identify and define key components and concepts of nursing theory. Further, it will create an example whereby the theory is applied to an area in the DNP project.

Topic 3: Middle-Range Theories
Connecting Nursing Theory and Evidence-Based Change Models
The paper will identify and describe the evidence-based change model and nursing theory to be utilized as the theoretical foundation of the DNP project. The paper should be 1500-2000 words, following the assignment rubric and the APA guidelines.
Topic 3 DQ 1
The assessment will compare and contrast two middle-range theories and explain how one of the theories can act as a foundation for direct practice improvement. It should also explain how the theories guide nursing practice while it guides research.
Topic 3 DQ 2
In this paper, students will be required to search literature in the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) using the terms middle-range theory, mid-range theory, and nursing. Later, they will select an article that focuses on the middle-range theory. Then, they will provide the article citations and explain how the theory was developed.
Topic 4: Ethical Theories
Topic 4 DQ 1
The assessment should describe a recent ethical issue that the student has faced in nursing practice, and it has national attention. It should also discuss how ethical theories can be applied to the problem. Then, it should explain how the issue can be addressed using examples or the DNP project.

The paper requires students to refer to their response in 4 DQ1 and give a decision tree on how they decided on the ethical theory to apply.
Topic 5: Biophysical and Psychosocial Theories I
Topic 5 DQ 1
The assessment requires students to provide an example that explains how they apply learning theory to their DNP project.
Topic 5 DQ 2
Students should propose a health behavior change theory that aligns with their DNP project.
Topic 6: Biophysical and Psychosocial Theories II
Topic 6 DQ 1
The assignment will focus on psychosocial theory in nursing practice, which encompasses factors such as social support, learned helplessness, stress, coping, and self-efficacy. In this paper, students should select one of the psychosocial aspects related to their DNP project.
Topic 6 DQ 2
The assessment emphasizes that DNP-prepared nurses must use economic theory. Students will then explain how economic theory can be applied to their proposed DNP project.
Topic 7: Organization and System Theories
Topic 7 DQ 1
In the paper, students should explain common traits of complex adaptive systems. The assignment will also explain how the DNP-prepared nurse can apply complex adaptive systems components to patient care.
Topic 7 DQ 2
The assessment will examine change theories in scholarly literature. It will also describe how change theory is applied from the DNP-prepared nurse’s perspective in relation to the proposed changes in their DNP project.
Topic 8: Science-Based Theories
Post-Conference Evaluation: Individual Success Plan (ISP)
The ISP assignment will rely on collaboration with the course faculty to meet agreed-on specific deliverables and program requirements. Some of the program requirements include completing immersion hours, completing program competencies, and completing the DNP project.
Students should develop the ISP plan, conduct conferences face to face or through the internet, use APA writing guidelines, and finally refer to the assignment rubric.
Reflective Journal
The assignment will require students to download the “Reflective Journal Template,” located in the DNP PI Workspace. Using the template, students will maintain a reflective journal that integrates self-reflection and inquiry in the DNP course.
Topic 8 DQ 1
The assignment will identify the science-based theories that students deem most useful to the DNP-prepared nurse and why.
Topic 8 DQ 2
The assessment will involve the exploration of different science-oriented theories. Then, it will prompt students to choose two theories and describe the importance of their role as DNP-prepared nurses.
