Experiential learning is a combinative approach to learning which incorporates the use of the intellect, phenomenon, and attitudes (Fromm et al., 2021). As an educator in various aspect of curriculum, how individuals learn has always been intriguing. I teach in everything from a traditional classroom, clinical, and simulation lab. In the simulation lab I see the students who thrive with tactile learning finally realize how talented they actually are, in the clinical environment I see those who have a truly caring heart show their compassion in way’s we cannot test for on an exam. “Learning involves a relatively permanent change in an individual’s thinking, emotions, attitudes, or behavior” (Butts & Rich, 2018).
A learning theory that can be applied to the DPI project is operant conditioning. While many learning theories can draw connections to the projects focus on hospital acquired pressure injury (HAPI) reduction, this behavioral theory has a focus on outcomes (responses after a stimulus). “According to operant conditioning principles, behavior is most effectively influenced or changed by following an individual’s response with some kind of reinforcement. A reinforcement is defined as a stimulus that increases the probability that a response will occur again under similar stimulus conditions” (Butts & Rich, 2018). This project introduces a device that will give a prompt to provide intervention based on a score. The result is a decrease in HAPI. As this is a response with a reinforcement that the response will occur again, it aligns with the behavioral change. For example, nurses using the device and following the prompt to apply interventions will see a repeated decrease in HAPI rates for each application of use.
Operant conditioning has been trialed in many disciplines, even healthcare. In a study investigating why physicians perceive the success of new care models differently the researchers’ interviewed physicians. “The results suggest that the respective values of the participants define the individual perceived advantages and thus, the assessment of the success of the health care innovation in general” (Richter et al., 2021). Essentially the researchers knew that as long as a positive response would occur, it is more likely that the behavior would be repeated. Values the learner cares about resulting in a response (stimulus) can have a strong effect on repetitive behavior. The hope is for the DPI that the results of decreased HAPI is a positive stimulus. The patient is happier with no new wounds or skin damage, the nursing care is lighter, the management is pleased with decreased results since the economic values of the hospital are met by not costing additional funds for a new HAPI. These are very simplified examples of positive responses, but the point remains the same, it is a positive response – one that nurses will want to repeat when they see it actually works.

The Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory was developed by E.M Rogers in 1962. This theory explains how an idea gains momentum and spreads throughout a specific population. The end goal is that an individual or a group of people to adapt to the new information and/or ideas and implement it. Behavior change in relation to an innovation does not always happen simultaneously to the new information being shared and equally to the entire team. In order to adopt and implement new knowledge, an individual must have a perception that this idea is new and innovative. During the DOI, the individual instructing must categorize their learning population into five different groups: (1) innovators, (2) early adopters, (3) early majority, (4) late majority, and (5) laggards. Diffusion is accomplished when an individual adopts an innovation. This tends to occur when an individual is aware of the need for innovation, decides to utilize (or not utilize) the innovation, begins the initial usage, and then continues to use the innovation. The factors that influence adoption include relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, triability, and observability (Introduction, n.d.). Furthermore, the DOI utilizes five steps to gain adoption, (1) knowledge, (2) persuasion, (3) decision, (4) implementation, and (5) confirmation (Innovation-Decision model, n.d.).
