The Cultural Competence Self-Assessment Checklist gave me awareness regarding several aspects of cultural competence. Although I have knowledge and awareness regarding cultural judgements and decisions, I fall short in sharing my own culture. Sharing culture is a practice that has increased due to social engagement, diversity, and sharing, communing, and collaboration (Katrini, 2018). The self-assessment checklist questions understanding of the impact of racism, sexism and homophobia where one should recognize that stereotypical attitudes and discriminatory actions can dehumanize or even encourage violence. My opportunity for further growth is to recognize these attitudes and actions early on in order to de-escalate situations. In the Emergency Department (ED), there have been multiple incidents where patients waiting in the department waiting room began disputes amongst themselves related to perceptions and judgements of discrimination. There was one incident where two patients were arguing, and an undercover police officer had to draw a weapon because the individuals became hostile.
The underserved populations within the San Bernardino County are prominent. My personal worldview encompasses a passion to help those that are in need. This instituted within my life early on as a grew up in a Christian household who spent many occasions providing meals to the homeless and low-income population, completing missionary work with the community church, and traveling to North America to assess health needs in the areas with little to no healthcare and high rates of poverty. These beliefs and values led to my career as a nurse and participating in community outreach. Participating in outreach towards the underserved should be a part of healthcare education. According to Leaune et.al., (2021) social accountability is demonstrated at an increased rate with medical students who participate in serving the underserved versus those who do not. The commitment to serving the community gives a sense of achievement, and value. Furthermore, it opens dialogue to gain knowledge towards different cultures and walks of life.

Cultural competence in healthcare is the ability of individuals, providers, or organizations to effectively deliver healthcare services that meet the social, cultural, traditional, and linguistic needs of patients irrespective of their race, color, sexual orientation, or knowledge. After reviewing the cultural competence self-assessment checklist written by Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society, (2023), I explored my cultural competence, skills, knowledge, and awareness of myself and interactions with others from different cultures. I am from a country that is grounded in cultural and traditional beliefs. In my country, we have Christians and Muslims who are always at log ahead with each other due to enforcing their religious belief on others. So, this assessment tool will assist me to recognize where I need to become more effective in working and living in a diverse environment (Cultural Competence Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society, (2023).
The term culture encompasses race, ethnicity, ancestry, beliefs, common experiences, and ways of living with each other in the world. Cultural competence also includes awareness, knowledge, characteristics, and skills shared, such as people with disabilities, Lesbian/Bisexual, Gay, and Transgender (LGBT), people with disability, religious groups, and low socioeconomic classes (Farokhzadian, et al., 2022). My personal worldview regarding health-related values and beliefs toward the underserved populations in my community is on food and nutrition. Traditionalists believe that when you give a child an egg to eat, they will grow up to become thieves. Because of this belief, in the olden days, mothers refuse to provide eggs for their young children. With improvement in health education and the spreading of awareness, young mothers are embracing the western culture and eradicating these beliefs (Mula, et al., 2023).

DNP-825 Topic 7 DQ 2 Sample Answer
Health literacy is an essential skill required to empower an individual to care for themselves and pursue wellness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2022), individual health literacy is the ability of a person to locate, comprehend and apply health information. During the COVID-19 pandemic, copious amounts of information and misinformation were available. Without having adequate health literacy, people were receiving inaccurate information from unreliable sources, especially on social media. Lower levels of health literacy were correlated to an increase in vaccine hesitancy (Turhan et al., 2022). There is a correlation between the level of education and health literacy. Health literacy improves with higher levels of education (Hill Briggs et al., 2021). Education’s correlation to health literacy is a significant social determinant of health. Health literacy plays a significant role in an individual’s decision-making and feeling empowered to act on health issues. Yet, many organizations do not take the time to assess and perform a true evaluationofn an individual’s health literacy. This makes ‘cookie cutter’ education to patients, which should never be a one size fits all.
This is where a DNP-prepared nurse can assist. With proper education, patients are able to pursue wellness and reduce disease which results in a reduction in hospital admissions and readmissions. A DNP can develop strategies or interventions to assist with health literacy assessments and ensure patient education is available based on individual needs. As a DNP, plain language education can be developed and administered to patients in a culturally appropriate manner in a language the patient can understand. If a patient is unable to read, the DNP may need to provide alternative education methods, like a video. Every patient should demonstrate procedures and cares a patient may be required to do at home. DNP nurses can also develop health literacy and patient teaching policies or procedures and remove staff barriers to help increase patient literacy. Based on current research as well as follow-up support to ensure patient and family understanding. On a more global scale, DNP-prepared nurses need to advocate for vulnerable and underserved populations so essential needs, such as education, are available. In the long run, this will increase health literacy and wellness in populations.
