Quality and Sustainability
The primary role of patient safety is to reduce and prevent perils, errors, and maltreatment that may occur to patients during healthcare provision (Sherman et al., 2020). Quality in healthcare is paramount, and all the measures and new interventions in healthcare look forward to improving the quality of care. As such, quality can be defined as the ability to satisfy requirements, while sustainability is the ability to maintain high quality over time (Sherman et al., 2020). While sustainability focuses on the long-term health of an institution, it also involves understanding the survival of the healthcare institution in the future. Therefore, the purpose of this assignment is to discuss the role of quality or safety in nursing practice.
Evaluation of Barriers and Facilitators
One of the barriers that may be experienced is inadequate management support. The management has the role of ensuring the safety and sustainability of healthcare institutions by ensuring an effective decision process that allows the clinic to gain significance in the modern nursing and healthcare delivery trend (Braithwaite et al., 2020). The dynamic nature of the healthcare system has been increasing the rate of change to meet the safety and quality need in healthcare. The management and leadership of the organization may not provide the optimum support needed for a project or proposed change. Therefore, strategies such as aligning the aims of the proposed project with that of the organization and increasing the participation of employees in the proposed project can be adopted to address the barrier.
The other barrier that may be experienced is the resistance to change among healthcare providers. Employees might be reluctant to change because any proposed change would require them to change their ways of operation. These changes also reduce the output of the employees as it comes with the required training to meet the new changes required in the healthcare system (Vergunst et al., 2020). Factors such as a low level of awareness may contribute to the barrier. Interventions such as open communication and active involvement of the healthcare providers can be adopted to address the barrier. The proposed project is highly feasible for implementation due to the absence of a similar project in the institution and its ability to address patient care safety and quality needs.
Health Care Entity
The healthcare clinic is a nonprofit American healthcare center focusing on integrated care, research, and education. It was started in 1915, and over the years, the clinic has been playing a major role in the US health sector. The unique approach to care in this facility has effectively met patient outcomes and provided patients with the desired quality of health care (Mortimer et al., 2018). The long years of operation in healthcare have allowed the institution to progress much in technology and care, giving it a higher rating in terms of healthcare quality. The virtue of surgical skills and effective management has made the institution financially stable and professional prominent among its peers. From 2016 to 2021, the clinic was ranked the top hospital in the US. The ranking included a total of 5,000 hospitals in the US. These higher ratings in quality and sustainability have been heightening the institutions’ financial stability, thus allowing them to invest in more complex healthcare research and equipment that improves the quality and effectiveness of healthcare delivery.
Safety Issue
Currently, the healthcare center has been focusing on reducing medication errors that have been affecting the effective diabetic treatment interventions. In the past, medication errors have been the major cause of poor healthcare quality and safety (Vergunst et al., 2020). The increase in the mortality rate experienced in the past years has negatively impacted healthcare delivery. These issues have been compelling the management to think of better options that would be important in reducing medication errors.
Medication error refers to any preventable event that may result in the wrong use of medication while the medication is in the hands of health professionals, patients, or consumers. Some of the causes of medication errors include distraction of health care professionals in the course of administering a drug, working environment, lack of proper knowledge about the drug being dispensed, wrong patient information, and systemic problems within a hospital setting (Sherman et al., 2020). However, the elimination of all measures that affect the quality of healthcare delivery increases the value of services offered within healthcare institutions. Accreditation or approvals from known institutions increases the quality and establishes standards of health care delivery in a clinic.
The effect of the medication error in the clinic is measured using the mortality and comorbidity rates taken each month at the clinic. The data collected on these rates show a reduction in the quality-of-care delivery in the clinic (Vergunst et al., 2020). Besides, the clinic also determines that medication errors are high when mortality and comorbidity rates are high at the clinic. These measures are important in the nursing practice as they inform the clinic on the required change that can effectively eliminate healthcare issues that affect the quality. Improvement in the healthcare system is determined by the quality of services offered to the patients. While the need to meet the quality depends in the employees in the nurse institutions, the management initiate these programs that drive the healthcare institutions towards meeting the desired patient outcome.
Safety Program
As evidenced earlier, the clinic has focused on integrated care that addresses healthcare problems such as diabetes. However, with the increased concern on medication errors, the clinic has been reducing its ability to meet the needs of the clinic and the patients. Addressing the above contemporary quality issue would positively impact the sustainability and quality of healthcare.
The application of modern technology in the clinic has been the main safety program that the clinic has been using to meet the safety needs of patients. The use of clinical technological programs such as EHRs and CDSS has been important in automating the medical delivery process that limits errors in the healthcare system (Mortimer et al., 2018). These programs have been important in raising the quality of care at the clinic and ensuring that all healthcare workers have the required skills to solve the contemporary issue effectively.
The use of technology has been significant in assessing the quality of an organization as it forms the basis of eliminating errors that affect the quality of health care delivery. Easy communication among the health care professionals in an organization has been achieved through the use of modern technology, thus enhancing proper coordination and collaboration during the whole process. Technology allows the organization to use automation which provides a uniform way of reporting the information and makes sorting and analysis of data much easier (Mortimer et al., 2018). This also enhanced reduction in data entry errors by those sorting out the medication error tracking forms, thus ensuring the accuracy of data collected. Technology also allowed easy spot checking of random data collected to determine discrepancies associated with the data to enable early detection.
A reduction in the mortality rate among patients with infections such as diabetes is one of the improved quality measures. The increased quality of services would increase the number of parents visiting the organization, translating to increased income within the organization. The increased value would imply that the hospital will be receiving many patients that would pay for the services at the organization (Mortimer et al., 2018). The needed power to advance the organization financially would imply that there would be added value to the general services at the company. The success of the use of the modern practice in care provision will be determined by comparing the number of errors before and after the implementation of the initiative. Fewer error incidences mark success compared to before execution.
Variables Used in Tracking Improvement
Reduction in medication-related adverse events would be an important sign of tracking the performance at the clinic. The data taken from the clinic would be important in showing the progress that the clinic has been making toward meeting the required quality of the clinic (Mazzucco et al., 2019). This system eradicates handwritten orders and also helps to reduce errors in prescriptions. Besides, it ensures fullness and legibility of orders, thus helping to improve quality efficiency in the health system hence a vital tool in ensuring patient safety.
Reduced hospital readmissions are also a positive patient outcome showing that the clinic is moving in the right direction on meeting the quality of healthcare (Mazzucco et al., 2019). While this variable is important in showing that the safety programs installed at the clinic are significant in meeting patient safety, it also shows an effective sign of an improving healthcare institution. This measure would work for the clinic as it reflects the outcome of safety and quality measures taken toward solving the contemporary issues affecting the clinic.
Conclusion
Quality and sustainability issues are a common phenomenon in most healthcare organizations. Poor quality threatens patient outcomes and healthcare organizations. Contemporary issues such as medication errors form part of the issues affecting the clinic despite the measures that had been taken to solve the problems. Healthcare providers should be informed about the ways of minimizing these errors to promote positive patient outcomes. Therefore, the clinic has been making important steps toward solving the problems that hinder it from meeting the required healthcare quality.
