The Africans were well suited to tropical climates, they also brought special skills and knowledge for crops such as rice, which the British found useful. Slavery and the African slave trade quickly became a building block of the colonial economy and an integral part of expanding and developing in the British commerce empire in the Atlantic world. Ships departed Europe for African markets with manufactured goods which were traded for purchased or kidnapped Africans. I chose to compare the Chesapeake colonies and New England colonies. The Chesapeake colonies were more commercially focused while the New England colonists came over the ocean for religious reasons. The Chesapeake colonies almost didn’t make it through the first few winters because the colonists were more focused on finding gold and silver instead of growing crops to feed themselves. The colonists eventually realized that tobacco was their cash crop instead of mining for gold. Growing and harvesting tobacco was a labor-intensive activity and the settlers often used indentured servants to do the back-breaking work. By the end of the 1700s the Chesapeake Bay colonies were using slaves instead of indentured servants to do their work (US History) By also taking native Americans as slaves the colonists were able to push into their territory and take it over.
The New England colonies were established by mostly puritans who were seeking religious freedom from the Church of England (The New England Colonies, 2019). The first group of puritans originally went to the Dutch Republic to practice freely but when their children began adopting Dutch customs, they decided to make the move to the Americas and founded Plymouth Colony. Unlike the Chesapeake Bay colonies, the puritans did not use slave labor and instead relied on large families to do the work. They developed an abundance of ocean-going ships that were used to transport goods from Virginia and the West Indies back to Europe. The puritans also used relationships that they later ruined with the Native people to push their way farther inland and establish more outposts for themselves. While the Chesapeake and New England colonies differed on why they came over they both used the native people as a way to gain more land for themselves and developed racial tensions among the different groups.

For this week’s discussion I chose to talk about the Chesapeake and New England colonies. With the population of England rising significantly during the sixteenth century, poverty and overcrowding became a noticeable problem, especially for the lower class. Coming from England, some settlers established the Chesapeake colonies in the areas of Virginia and Maryland. The original settlers in these colonies had high hopes of finding gold, but quickly discovered that the only way for them to make money in these locations was to grow tobacco (Corbett et al., 2014). Factors that led to this being the only source of profit included resistance from the local native inhabitants known as the Powhatan, resistance from each other within, and their inability to grow their own food since many focused on trying to find silver and gold instead. Our textbook mentions that these settlers were composed of unemployed, unmarried, and many other eager Englishman who hoped for a better life (Corbett et al., 2014). The high demand of growing tobacco and lack of manpower within these colonies led to the increased use of indentured servants and eventually transitioning into a more slavery-based platform (Corbett et al., 2014). With the high amounts of immigration, “Of the more than 198,400 people who immigrated to the English American colonies in the seventeenth century, 67 percent (132,100) were indentured servants, slaves, and felons” (Dahlberg, 2012, p. 1).
While the Settlers of the New England colonies also came from England, they had a different plan in mind. The New England colonies consisted of New Haven, Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, Rhode Island, and Connecticut (Corbett et al., 2014). The movement of these settlers was strongly religious based and composed of many Puritans that were highly family oriented. These settlers focused on church and relied on the individual congregations to decide what was best for them (Corbett et al., 2014). With the controlling grip of the Church of England getting tighter at that time, it influenced many puritans to constantly call for reform. The appealing factor of freedom of religion and the ability to pursue puritanism was a major factor that led these settlers to colonize in the New England colonies. Instead of using slave labor like the Chesapeake colonies, the New England colonies relied on the members of their large families to handle the workload. One similarity between the colonies is that just like the Chesapeake colonies, the New England colonies met resistance from the local natives and the expansion of their colonies was met with a handful of challenges (Corbett et al., 2014).
