HLT 362 Applied Statistics for Health Care Professionals
The course will introduce students to concepts of statistics and lay emphasis on their implications for healthcare professions. Through the course, learners will get to understand statistics concepts and appropriate statistical techniques utilized in published studies and different settings. The course will also focus on statistical evaluation concepts of variable factors such as descriptive statistics, experimental design, and P values. Descriptive statistics will include power analysis, sampling techniques, mode, median, and mean.
Topic 1: What Is Statistics, and Why Is it Important to Health Sciences?
Class Introductions
Students will make their initial post, where they will introduce themselves to peers and give an exciting and challenging aspect they hope to experience as they complete the course.
Topic 1 DQ 1
The paper will discuss the historical application of statistics in the healthcare profession. It will also provide an example of how statistics applications have changed or influenced healthcare practices or operations.
Topic 1 DQ 2
The assignment will discuss the relevance of a person in the healthcare practice understanding statistical concepts. The student will also give an example of how one can use statistical data in their specialty or facility today and what they are required to do with the information as a healthcare practitioner.

Application of Statistics in Health Care
The paper will focus on the relevance of applying and interpreting statistical data in healthcare. Students will be required to review the Topic 1 statistical concept and discuss the importance of statistical applications in healthcare in 750-1000 words.
The assignment will describe how statistics is applied in healthcare while discussing its relevance to leadership, health promotion, safety, and quality. Also, it will require students to refer to their specialty area and how they use statistical data and discuss how they obtain the data. Again, it will explain how statistical knowledge is utilized in daily operations and how it can be used to make decisions in healthcare.

Note: Students should reference 3 peer-reviewed sources, refer to the assignment rubric, and follow APA writing guidelines.
Topic 2: Population and Sampling Distributions
Topic 2 DQ 1
In this assessment, students will first need to select an article from the GCU library they have not used before. Then, they will give an overview of the research while describing the strategy utilized for sample selection. Also, the paper will evaluate how effective the chosen sampling technique was while including the article title and permalink in the post.
Topic 2 DQ 2
The paper will refer to the article selected in DQ 1 and identify three key questions that would be asked and answered when reading the article and why they are important.
In response to peers’ learners will give questions and answers that could be considered based on their chosen articles.

Topic 3: Clinical Inquiry and Hypothesis Testing
Topic 3 DQ 1
In this assessment students will provide two differing examples of how studies use hypothesis testing while describing the criteria used to reject null hypothesis. The paper will also discuss the relevance of hypothesis testing in one’s practice and with patient interactions.
Topic 3 DQ 2
The paper will evaluate and give examples of how one can use confidence intervals and hypothesis testing in healthcare research. Also, it should provide a workplace example that shows their ideas.
Article Analysis 2
Students will search the GCU library and identify two healthcare articles that utilize quantitative research. The assignment should not refer to articles in the course resources or those used in past assignments.
Then, students should analyze the articles based on the template provided in part 2.
Students should refer to “Patient Preference and Satisfaction in Hospital-at-Home and Usual Hospital Care for COPD Exacerbations: Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial,” in conjunction with the “Article Analysis Example 2” for an example of an article analysis.
Topic 4: Statistical Analysis
Topic 4 DQ 1
The paper should give an example of nonexperimental, quasi-experimental, and experimental research from the GCU library. Then, students should discuss how each research type differs from the others.
In response to peers’ learners should evaluate the effectiveness of research designs for the two examples provided.
Topic 4 DQ 2
The assessment will differentiate between quality improvement and research. Also, it will give a workplace example where quantitative and qualitative study was applied and how it was utilized within the firm.
In response to peers’ students will discuss how the study findings can be incorporated into another healthcare setting.
Quality Improvement Proposal
The assignment will begin by identifying a quality improvement opportunity in one’s practice or facility. In 1250-1500 words, the student will describe an issue/problem and propose a quality improvement initiative based on EBP. Students will also be required to apply “The Road to Evidence-Based Practice” process to create a proposal.
In the paper students should provide an overview and setting of the issue. Then, they should explain the relevance of a quality improvement initiative and expected outcomes. Moreover, it should discuss how previous study results support quality improvement initiatives and their expected outcomes. Further, it should discuss the steps needed to implement the initiative and the rationale to support arguments. Again, the paper should explain how the improvement initiative will be evaluated to determine its effectiveness. Lastly, learners will be required to support their explanation by identifying statistical tests, hypothesis tests, and variables that they would need to prove the success of the quality improvement initiative implemented.
More importantly, students should refer to the assignment rubric and APA guidelines while citing peer-reviewed sources to support their arguments.
Topic 5: Discovering Relationships and Building Models
Topic 5 DQ 1
The assignment will describe the changes influenced by epidemiological data in health practices. Also, it will give an example and explain which data could be used to impact change in practice.
Topic 5 DQ 2
The paper will discuss ways through which a firm utilizes technology to collect patient and healthcare data and how the information is used in directing patient care and outcomes.
