A nursing competency that will be most important to my future nursing practice is going to be leadership and evidence-based practice. I have been a registered nurse for a little over one year. As I progress in my career, I feel that my leadership role and responsibilities will constantly evolve especially as my role changes and I accept a path in either nurse management or Nurse Practitioner. At the hospital I currently work at, I am being pushed to precept new hire’s. One of the competencies that is vital in taking this new role would be leadership. Although, I have experience in leadership in some extent with patient care, delegation with nurse assistants and patients, I still feel like a novice. According to The Joint Commission, nurse leadership is lifelong endeavor, that evolves through regulated education, time and experience (Mennella, 2018). Over time as my education and confidence grows, I feel like my leadership skills will also improve.
Evidence-based practice is another core competency that I believe will be most important to my future nursing practice. Environments and technology are continuously changing and adapting. Evidence-based practice is a result of a large amount of research and root cause analysis to resolve ongoing problems. Safety should always be an important nursing practice no matter the circumstance.
Patient center care is also extremely important because the patient should always be the focus of all health care. Without a patient there would be no health care. It is important to look at all aspects when taking care of our patients. Every patient is different and unique in their own way so building a relationship with trust, respect, and understanding will help encourage the patient in participation in their care or treatment plan.” It is important for patients to always be in complete control when it comes to making decisions about their own care and treatment.” (Solutions, 2019) Nurses should be nonjudgmental, respectful and compassionate towards patients’ values and beliefs. I totally can relate to you about when you were a new nurse and were task oriented and unable to see the big picture sometimes. I am a new nurse and I often find myself thinking that I need to step back and look at what is going on. Sometimes we get so tied up in thinking “I need to pass this med” or “I need to know their blood sugar” that we forget about why were actually doing things. I am excited to see myself change into a nurse that can see the big picture and not just the face value of what is going on.
I also think that professionalism is very important. I have worked at a hospital that, in my opinion, greatly lacked this competency. I think that nurses should all wear the same color, mostly to help in case of an emergency. It is very hard when responding to a code, to know who is a nurse, who is from respiratory, who is from lab, etc.. I think that nurses also need to realize that patients are patients, no matter what. We need to speak to them like they understand what is going on even when they don’t. It makes me upset to see nurses talking over patients and having unprofessional conversations with family that shouldn’t be had around the patients. For example, this patient was on hospice and passing away, however, still alert. My preceptor was talking over her and told the family “she’s dying, it won’t be much longer.” I was very taken back by that. I have had personal experience with family members passing in a hospital experience and those conversations should be held elsewhere.
