I will be the first to say that I am not sure if I’m fully understanding this week’s discussion topic, but nonetheless, here we go…
The value for why a nurse would obtain a certification, whether it be personal or professional, is dependent upon the individual. Generally speaking, the validation and formal recognition of a nurse’s knowledge, skills, and abilities are enhanced when a nurse obtains a certification in a specialized area. In the article, CMSRNs’ continuing competence methods and perceived value of certification: A descriptive study, by Boyle & Thompson (2020), studies were conducted by several different review boards using the Perceived Value of Certification Tool (PVCT) to determine if obtaining a certification was done by a nurse for the: 1) intrinsic/extrinsic reward, and/or 2) personal/professional incentive.
According to Boyle & Thompson (2020), the PVCT study that was done by several systematic review boards ranked 12 intrinsic value statements and 6 extrinsic value statements. A combination of both personal and professional reasons as to why certification was valued was intertwined within the intrinsic/extrinsic ranks. This is particularly interesting to me because I have the CVRN-BC certification…and I can say that all of the values listed, whether it is intrinsic or extrinsic, personal or professional, are absolutely all the reasons why I value my certification. Obtaining my certification was such a challenge for me because it came at a time when I was questioning my knowledge, abilities, and skills as a nurse. The personal feelings of accomplishment and satisfaction I felt when I passed the exam was done more so to prove to myself and my coworkers that I do possess the knowledge and skills it takes to work in such a fast-paced, high-stress area.
That all being said, the article seemed rather limited on the information of the actual PVCT used by all of the review boards. As stated in prior discussion, research is only one aspect of evidence-based practice (EBP). EBP requires looking at a situation from multiple facets within a community. One of the strategies that our textbook mentions for creating a strong literature review/search for evidence would be the selection of resources from a comprehensive database (Houser, 2018). Using a comprehensive database, such as CINAHL, to search more on how PVCT can go beyond nursing and into other realms of healthcare would be beneficial to everyone.

I choose to summarize the Research article: Continuing Competencies: There were four categories of literature noted in the study from 2012-2020. They were Validation, international, and competencies in the disciplines other than nursing. It was found that some educational sessions that were utilized lacked quality of knowledge, needed. The study highlighted that professionals might attend cheap and convenient education courses that lacked quality or are not in what particularly necessary in the practice and in greatest need (Boyle2020). It also stated that participants “may not be to understand, retain, or use the information provided and attendance in the courses does not ensure changes in practice” (Boyle. 2020). The review discussed several means of continuing competency methods through publication and professional presentation, portfolios, and performance formal 360 degree assessment. (Boyle. 2020). There were 50 or more articles over a time span, so accuracy is evident. The author quoted Di Leonardi several times. Di Leonardi was a member of a task force of authors which were sponsored by an organization that has accreditation Board of Specialty Nurse Certification (Leonardi. Et.at. 2019). “The task force discovered perspectives on continuing competency and found although licensing and credentialing organization addressed the topic thoroughly, little attention has be devoted to the perspectives of individual clinicians, and recipients of clinician services”. (Leonardi. Et.al 2019). It was stated by the members of the task force that conducted the study Boyle had did a successful job at contributing research to her review of the studies done by Di Leonardi to address continuing competence by quoting the researcher several times which supported the review. I found it interesting that the literature review section for continuing competencies didn’t give much merit to using simulation for evaluation I worked in a .facility which we had quarterly mock simulation and codes. It was called over the P.A. system, all necessary departments responded. We would go the full drill as if it were a real code, then have a debriefing to discuss what could be improved.. This involved nursing, doctors, anesthesia, lab and the house supervisor etc. I found it quite useful and informative.
