Roy’s adaptation model may be applied to assess patient’s holistic status and guide the patients to change accordingly. Whether we are caring for a patient suffering from one condition or more than one affliction, patients may need a great deal of adaptation in order to be able to manage all changes attached to the disease process they are suffering from, which may range from an acute pain to a body image disturbance. Roy’s theory is frequently mentioned and associated with Orem’s theory of self-care. Once patients are recognized as having self-care deficit, there is a need for adaptation to new changes in order to cope with this new health conditions or health problems. Occasionally, these two theories are combined and applied interchangeably. In applying both theories, there are some important factors that are necessary to mention. Establishing a healthy nurse-patient relationship and having care provider’s cooperation.
According to Kaur & Mahal (2013), Roy’s Adaptation Nursing theory defines persons as biopsychosocial beings who need to adjust to environmental stimuli. These environmental stimuli include Focal, Contextual and Residual Stimuli. The Focal stimuli are the inner and exterior influences that instantly challenge the person. The Contextual stimuli are identified as internal and external influences that act on person’s perception of focal stimulus. The contextual stimuli are all other stimuli that contributes directly to the individual or a group’s responses.
According to Punjani (2013) Roy’s theory model concentrates on the persons’ ability to adapt to the environment. Roy’s model, Adaptation describes the process and result whereby thinking and feeling persons as individuals or in groups, use conscious and choice to generate human and environmental integration. Also, Roy’s theory outlines that nurses should work and make changes to the environment rather than the patient. Also, that is nurse’s obligation to enhance the interaction of the person with their environment, there by enhance adaptation
According to Punjani (2013) Roy views a person as “an adaptive specimen that reacts to internal and external stimuli within their environments. Also, a person is classified as a bio-psycho-social being who is repeatedly interacting with environmental variations and in order to survive the individual must therefore continuously adapt to the environmental changes. The person employs different inborn and developed methods that are instinctive such as psychological, biological, and social in order to manage environmental variations.
Yes, the Roy’s theory will assist me, in assessing successful adaptation of those patients I will be providing care in the future as family nurse practitioner. Therefore, the use of the nursing process as support along with the application of Roy’s nursing theory will assist through continuous assessment, setting achievable goals, implementation of a nursing plan of action in order to accomplish all set goals. Continuous evaluation will expose any ineffective response to personal adaptation by any individual under my care, which will allow me to put in place all necessary nursing interventions to address these adaptation issues.
I would like to take this opportunity Dr. Talley to show my appreciation for your guidance, teaching and encouragement to this group and to me in our journey towards our professional formation as master’s prepared nurses. All theories I have learnt will provide me a solid foundation in becoming a competent nurse practitioner in the future.

Although I will utilize various nursing theories in my future practice, one that will be used by me continuously is Peplau’s Interpersonal Relations theory. I chose this theory because I believe that it is valuable and the beginning foundation of being a successful advanced professional nurse. This theory causes me to reflect on my past and present experiences, whether good or bad, and learn from them and be motivated to do and be better as I progress as an advanced clinical and professional nurse. In the past few weeks, I have learned that health care professionals need to develop skills in reflective and critical thinking to identify and respond to new situations and practice dilemmas (Hood, 2014). Peplau’s Interpersonal Relations theory also warrants me to look at the future and what lies ahead of me and what will be expected of me as my nursing role changes and develops.
My passion is to be the best Family Nurse Practitioner I feel came from personal values of desiring to take care of people. Being professional not only portrays who I am but it also gives me the confidence to meet challenges as they arise. My values combined with nursing theory will be instilled into my current nursing practice and future advanced clinical practice. According to Hood (2014), early in a person’s life, values are formed in families, but a person’s values may change over time. When I share or communicate with others, this creates a community within the nursing profession. I want to be able to understand my patients and the reason for their behavior and responses to health education and increase their chances of restoration to a normal state of health. This networking with other healthcare disciplines will be an opportunity for me to expand my knowledge outside of nursing, share information about professional nursing with people who are not nurses and explore other career options. By utilizing the Interpersonal Relations theory, this will allow my patients to be able to communicate their concerns and any questions they may have as we develop an interpersonal relationship that can enhance their healing process.
Interpersonal Relations theory meshes with my values in that I love caring for patients of all ages. When people perform with passion, the world becomes full of opportunities, rather than obstacles, and they focus on personal abilities rather than limitations (Hood, 2014). Being able to care for my patients requires skills and knowledge combined with my passion of helping others. This is something that I want to integrate into my practice as a professional nurse now and for future advanced clinical practice. Interpersonal relations are valuable and are so important in professional nursing. In fact, they are the foundation of a professional nurse and allows a nurse to act ethically toward all patients while being nonbiased. My career will equip me with many life skills that can transfer to other professions, while my basic nursing knowledge transfers to a variety of professional nursing specialty areas. I will forever be on a continuous learning journey. Having effective leadership skills while establishing a relationship with my patients will only enhance my abilities as a professional advanced clinical nurse. To create my preferred future, I will utilize my cognitive, clinical and communication skills while remaining professional as I care for the welfare and well-being of my patients.
This course has equipped me in more ways than I can count. This course has been a foundation and an eye opener for which my advanced nurse practice is based upon. I have learned so much in these weeks; from the value of nursing theory to how to create an environment that incorporates the application of nursing theory to my future advanced nursing practice. This course taught me more research methods as well as a new outlook on how to relate to patients’ behaviors as well as my own. Things I will take with me and will teach others are how to care for others, how to continue knowing yourself while addressing and identifying patients’ needs, what it takes to be a great leader that will influence positive changes to healthcare, and how to utilize nursing theories in nursing practice for the betterment of the nursing profession.

- Why do you prefer the nursing theory you selected?
Out of all of the theories I have learned about, I decided to select Barnard’s Parent-Child Interaction Theory. I have selected this theory because it is dear to my heart. Recently, our hospital became aware of an event.
The event read:
“RN came into patient room due to excessive baby crying that was not relieved. RN noted baby under hospital bed and patient snoring.”
If there is anything in this world I could change it would be things like this that show there is no parent-child interaction. The bond is not developing how it should for the child’s sake. I have such a heart for children and wish I could rid all of the hatred, hostility, neglect, abuse, etc. in their lives. I am all about children being successful, healthy, and free of stressors that may impede their development, their environment, and even their health which is why I chose this theory and applied it as an ongoing issue in our field.
- How can this theory be used in your current practice area (education, executive, advanced clinical practice, informatics, or healthcare policy)?
My current practice area is the operating room. I work as a pediatric operating room nurse. I have very little interaction with parents before and after surgery. My main job is to comfort the scared, confused child. I have a short time to bond/interact with them in order to gain their trust. I think that Barnard’s model applies here as well, even though I am not a care giver or a parent, I am still in charge of this child’s safety. In order to let them know they are safe with me, we must interact in a sort of parent-child way. Knowing what I know now, I can utilize Barnard’s theory to obtain the child’s trust, make them not afraid, and properly be their advocate during this traumatic time.
- How can this theory be used in your future practice area (education, executive advanced clinical practice, informatics or healthcare policy)?
In my future practice area (education), I can utilize this theory as a way to teach new parents, teenagers, abuse victims, rape victims, etc. of options and resources out there to help increase a bond between a child and their parent or care giver. I can also teach my future nursing students of signs to look for that show that the bond/interaction is absent. I can teach future nurses in the healthcare field to promote maternal/parent-infant bonding, help mothers and children maintain adequate nutrition, ways to look for complications of body systems due to the illicit substances during pregnancy and after, and provide safe, effective care to their parent-child patients while also teaching them how to evaluate if the interventions based on evidence were successful (MacMullen et al., 2014).
By utilizing up to date research in my education, keeping up to date with guidelines, policies, and theories, I can teach future nurses how to help enhance Barnard’s theory and decrease the incidence of child neglect, child abuse, or an absence in bonding and interactions between a child and their parent or caregiver (MacMullen et al., 2014).

Sample Answer 5 for NR 501 Week 8: Course Reflection and Future Application
First of all I would like to mention that I have gained a great deal of knowledge from this class. There was so much ideas from different discussion topics about different theories that can be employ in our healthcare system.
The nursing theory I would prefer is Peplau’s Nurse-Patient relationship. I chose this theory because I think that this particular theory is important for nurses to adapt during their practice. Nurse patient relationship is very important for a nurse to gain a patient trust so that a nurse can provide the right care for the patient. The four phases will definitely better improve patient care and patient goals will be achieved.
As an advance clinical practice nurse I would employ this theory as a vision for the unit so that staff members will gain the ability to learn and then apply learning to practice which has a significant impact on delivering effective clinical care. A skilled and competent workforce ensures patient safety, and will be able to recognize and respond to clinical need more appropriately. The nurse-patient relationship is enhanced when nurses are aware of how their own behavior affects the patient. For example the nurse interaction with the patient must be positive because the nurse behavior has a significant effect on the patient’s wellbeing and the quality and outcome of nursing care. For nurses to successfully implement theory into practice, they must be able to reflect critically on their own practice and the implications of their interventions (Parker & Smith, 2010).
This theory can be used in my future practice to educate future nurses. As nursing continues to embrace a holistic paradigm, it is important for educational programs to strive within coursework to include teachings that are inclusive of mind, body, and spirit. There is a call for nurses to become thoughtful and reflective of their practice. Through the aid of holistic practice, nurses will have an increased ability to process the feelings, thoughts, and emotions they may have toward their patients. The phases of the therapeutic nurse-client are highly comparable to the nursing process making it vastly applicable. Assessment coincides with the orientation phase; nursing diagnosis and planning with the identification phase; implementation as to the exploitation phase; and lastly, evaluation with the resolution phase. Peplau’s theory provides nursing a useful set of three interlocking and oftentimes overlapping working phases for nurses’ interaction with patients in the form of the nurse–patient relationship. This is essential for the nursing practice so that nurses can deliver care to promote health and education for patients and community in general (Deane, & Fain, 2016).
