Chamberlain University NR 505 Week 2: PICOT/PICo and Practice Questions– Step-By-Step Guide
This guide will demonstrate how to complete the Chamberlain University NR 505 Week 2: PICOT/PICo and Practice Questions assignment based on general principles of academic writing. Here, we will show you the A, B, Cs of completing an academic paper, irrespective of the instructions. After guiding you through what to do, the guide will leave one or two sample essays at the end to highlight the various sections discussed below.
How to Research and Prepare for NR 505 Week 2: PICOT/PICo and Practice Questions
Whether one passes or fails an academic assignment such as the Chamberlain University NR 505 Week 2: PICOT/PICo and Practice Questions depends on the preparation done beforehand. The first thing to do once you receive an assignment is to quickly skim through the requirements. Once that is done, start going through the instructions one by one to clearly understand what the instructor wants. The most important thing here is to understand the required format—whether it is APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.
After understanding the requirements of the paper, the next phase is to gather relevant materials. The first place to start the research process is the weekly resources. Go through the resources provided in the instructions to determine which ones fit the assignment. After reviewing the provided resources, use the university library to search for additional resources. After gathering sufficient and necessary resources, you are now ready to start drafting your paper.
How to Write the Introduction for NR 505 Week 2: PICOT/PICo and Practice Questions
The introduction for the Chamberlain University NR 505 Week 2: PICOT/PICo and Practice Questions is where you tell the instructor what your paper will encompass. In three to four statements, highlight the important points that will form the basis of your paper. Here, you can include statistics to show the importance of the topic you will be discussing. At the end of the introduction, write a clear purpose statement outlining what exactly will be contained in the paper. This statement will start with “The purpose of this paper…” and then proceed to outline the various sections of the instructions.

How to Write the Body for NR 505 Week 2: PICOT/PICo and Practice Questions
After the introduction, move into the main part of the NR 505 Week 2: PICOT/PICo and Practice Questions assignment, which is the body. Given that the paper you will be writing is not experimental, the way you organize the headings and subheadings of your paper is critically important. In some cases, you might have to use more subheadings to properly organize the assignment. The organization will depend on the rubric provided. Carefully examine the rubric, as it will contain all the detailed requirements of the assignment. Sometimes, the rubric will have information that the normal instructions lack.
Another important factor to consider at this point is how to do citations. In-text citations are fundamental as they support the arguments and points you make in the paper. At this point, the resources gathered at the beginning will come in handy. Integrating the ideas of the authors with your own will ensure that you produce a comprehensive paper. Also, follow the given citation format. In most cases, APA 7 is the preferred format for nursing assignments.
How to Write the Conclusion for NR 505 Week 2: PICOT/PICo and Practice Questions
After completing the main sections, write the conclusion of your paper. The conclusion is a summary of the main points you made in your paper. However, you need to rewrite the points and not simply copy and paste them. By restating the points from each subheading, you will provide a nuanced overview of the assignment to the reader.
How to Format the References List for NR 505 Week 2: PICOT/PICo and Practice Questions
The very last part of your paper involves listing the sources used in your paper. These sources should be listed in alphabetical order and double-spaced. Additionally, use a hanging indent for each source that appears in this list. Lastly, only the sources cited within the body of the paper should appear here.

Quantitative Approach
Initially, I thought that the qualitative approach would be a better approach for my evidence-based project proposal. After further review, I now am convinced that the quantitative approach is a better approach for my evidence-based Practice (EBP) project proposal. Evidence-based practice is aimed at hardwiring current knowledge into common care decisions to improve care processes and patient outcomes (Stevens, 2013). Evidence-based practice also unifies research evidence with clinical expertise and encourages through individualization of care through inclusion of patient preferences (Stevens, 2013).
Why the Quantitative Approach is best for rural populations’ unplanned healthcare (Area of Interest)
Because of my clinical experience with my area of interest in the rural population, this approach will allow a collection of opinions, facts, attitudes, and behaviors to be analyzed. The quantitative approach will also allow results to be generalized from a larger population such as the rural population. With the use of the quantitative approach, this population will have the opportunity to reveal their needs and causes of lack of healthcare. This research approach will be beneficial in order to decrease the incidence of unplanned healthcare, which is one of the biggest healthcare challenges that this population continues to face. With the use of the quantitative research method, data can be collected from various forms such as: online surveys, paper surveys, telephone interviews, and face to face interviews. The collection of this data will allow comparison of opinions and further investigation toward a resolution. As exploration of the chosen population occurs with the combination of clinical experiences, an advancement of the proposed EBP will promote the intended outcome of better healthcare strategies.
PICO Quantitative Question
In the rural population (P) does health education, early diagnosis, and healthcare programs (I) compared to deploying health resources geographically (C) reduce the incidence of unplanned healthcare (O).
Quantitative Practice Question
Is there a link between the lack of healthcare education, early diagnosis, healthcare programs and unplanned healthcare?

I believe both quantitative and qualitative approaches could be beneficial for this specific topic, but I plan to focus on the qualitative approach. In qualitative research the focus is on the collection and analysis of data. The researcher has to remain fluid and flexible during the research process. Their direction may need to change slightly in order to get closer to their goal. Qualitative research main purpose is to explore and describe a participant’s experience. The approach starts out with a broad question, but process oriented and context bound (Malagon-Maldonado, 2014). The focus for quantitative research is usually narrow and product related.
My PICo question is: in a hospital setting where nurses conduct bedside shift report opposed to station-based report, is patient satisfaction higher? I picked this question to help guide the nurses to understand the value bedside shift report has for the patients and their families as well as the nurses. We have set this practice as a standard in our hospital and many units do very well. We see staff struggling on the units that have larger number of patients. While using the qualitative approach I will start broad in my question but hope to identify some research specific to the patient satisfaction in the emergency department. As the nursing operations manager of the emergency department, we strive to improve our communication with our patients concerning their plan of care. This research will hopefully identify some of the barriers and how successful organizations supported their staff to overcome those barriers (Taylor, 2015).

Sample Answer 3 for NR 505 Week 2: PICOT/PICo and Practice Questions
For my evidenced based practice proposal project, I chose to go with a qualitative approach for research on veterans’ risk for suicide post deployment. For this project, I wanted to better understand the motivation and thought process of the veteran post deployment and if there were extenuating circumstances that accelerated their decision towards self-harm and thus qualitative research was the best approach. Ramchand (2016), discusses the need for qualitative approach as a way to better understand where veterans are coming from when they experience suicidal ideation and what is driving them to a place of crisis. There are so many different research trajectories on the subject of post war veterans and their risk for suicide such as the integration of females in combat zones and pre-existing mental illness in the combat veteran that I was not sure how to narrow down the issue to formulate a question. I chose to keep the subject matter broad and my research question is: Are post war veterans at a greater risk for suicide as they reintegrate into society?
Population (P): Post war veterans
Interest (I): Risk for suicide
Context (Co): Reintegration into society
The qualitative research design I chose to use is the phenomenology because it looks at the lived experiences of the individual. This research design seeks to understand the individual and the experiences they have lived by asking in-depth questions about their life and circumstances surrounding their existence. Polit &Beck (2017), discuss how individuals create truth about their own reality through their lived experiences. In depth questioning from the researcher helps to draw out these truths and better understand the circumstances that molded their beliefs. Interpretive phenomenology allows the researcher to enter the world of the participant without pre-conceived notions or ideas to better understand the individual (Polit, 2017). I have chosen to research the post war veterans risk for suicide through the interpretive aspect of the phenomenological design because I want to understand their thought process on the subject and not come with my own agenda or pre-conceived ideas.

Sample Answer 4 for NR 505 Week 2: PICOT/PICo and Practice Questions
I was recently taking care of a ‘general in patient’ hospice-patient in a local hospital. My job as her hospice nurse is to ensure that the proper comfort measures are ordered by the hospitalist or my hospice administrator and carried out by the facility nursing staff. I arrived at the hospital at 9 o’clock a.m. When I stepped into the patient’s room I realized instantly that she was in distress and her husband was extremely unhappy. The first words he spoke to me were “I don’t think I am getting what I was promised.” After he and I talked further I found that the patient (who should be receiving morphine every hour and haldol every 4 hours) had not received her medications as ordered and he had just arrived around 8:30 a.m. and found her with tachycardia, and tachypnea. To make a long story short. The night nurse had not given bedside report so the distress my patient was in had not been visualized. Her husband was not there to call for her medications and she was not cognitively intact to call out herself. The oncoming day shift nurse had a combative patient within minutes of arriving on the floor so, she was engaged with that patient. If bedside report had occurred a colleague could have helped the day nurse to care for the hospice patient or the combative patient. I feel that bedside report is crucial for any facility nursing care, ED included.

The importance of choosing the correct approach to answer a research project is very important. Looking back at week one of this course, my focus as a future nurse educator centers around the ability to properly train new graduate registered nurses. As new graduates, we all needed a safe and comfortable environment to start our practice. This environment includes specialized training, goal setting, and properly trained preceptors. One hospital took a great step to help new graduate registered nurses’ feel properly educated. They opened a dedicated educational unit. This unit helps new graduates develop their skills in a safe practice environment. How can my project prove to be beneficial? In our current state of healthcare, we have many graduates who come into nursing only to leave the profession within the first couple of years of their practice. Why? New graduates feel the lack of support from not only their own fellow nurses, but as well they state the constant pressure they are under to perform at high levels. Patients and families see this as well. Maryniak, Markantes, and Murphy write, about how the patients felt the nurses were rushed and unable to properly educate them about new medications (2014). As well, the link between scholarship and practical implication is lacking. New graduates need preceptors who are properly educated on the how to educate, provide feedback, support, and communicate well with new nurses (Maryniak et al., 2014).
My goal for my research project is to see if a dedicated education unit is beneficial for new graduates. Through the use of quantitative research, I hope to provide positive evidence that a dedicated educational unit for new graduate RN’s can help to retain and ease the transition between scholarship and real- life practice. Why use quantitative approach for this project? The use of quantitative approach allows for a structured methodology to pursue knowledge (Park & Park, 2016). As well in quantitative research, the researcher is trying to establish a relationship between a cause which leads to an effect. An example of such a cause and effect relationship would be implementing a falls reduction program in an acute care hospital which leads to a reduction in falls. So, in quantitative research, the goal is to test a theory set forth by the researcher (Park & Park, 2016). As for my PICOT question, I look back to week one of this course. The P is the population for which I will be studying. In this case, it is new RN graduates. The intervention planned for my project is to institute a dedicated new graduate nurse education unit. As for C, I will compare my education unit graduates with new graduates who are not part of the program. Finally, my O or outcome will be improved retention after one year in the dedicated educational unit group. As I previously stated, I hope to achieve the goal of proper preparation for new graduate RN’s will lead to greater retention and overall professional happiness.
The formulation of a research question takes our previous education in research methods to the next level. In the research question, the researcher is using this section of their project to write a concise explanation of what is being studied and the possible outcome. As well, they are using the question to suggest there is correlation between what is being studied and the likely outcome. For my project, my research question will be the following: What is the benefit of using a dedicated educational unit for new graduate RN’s compared to using traditional precepting methods?
