A virtual learning environment (VLE) is an online system that allows teachers to share educational materials with their students (Verkuyl et. al., 2017). For a student to be able to access VLE is an advantage for learners and teachers. For instance, when VLE is integrated into course assignments, it encourages communication between teachers and the students, links to outside sources, resource hubs, access to embedded content, and allow teachers to create virtual space to represent their classroom.
Virtual worlds help students to bridge the gap between knowledge and application by providing them with opportunities to use simulation in a safe environment, and by allowing individuals to practice skills, try out new ideas, and learn from their mistakes without disadvantage (Chow, 2016). The great thing about VLE is that the learning space is always available, which is perfect for students that require more flexible schedules. One of the benefits that I enjoy about VLE is that it enable students to engage in personalized education and allow them to work at their own pace.
VLE creates an engaging learning environment that keep student’s attention and promote interaction between students, well as teachers. At my organization VLE is utilized for BLS, ACLS, and PALS. The same methodology used by Instructional Design Model (ADDIE) is composed into video from simulation scenarios. These videos along with links, text, and questions are used to train health professionals. According to Demian and Morrice (2015), a well-maintained VLE should enable students of all learning styles to receive the best possible education, in a way that they may not in an exclusively lecture-based environment which tends to be focused on auditory only.

I agree that virtual learning environments are very useful online education platforms. They are engaging extensions of written or oral lessons. As you point out, VLE based classes contain many useful tools that help nurses learn methodology and participate in real world situations. I also think VLE learning platforms are convenient for students because they can learn from the comfort of their homes or offices. Similar to learning on the go. I can also pull up past lessons or interactions to review them further if I feel weak on a certain topic. I will never discount the value of a traditional education, but I would prefer all of my classes be supplemented this way because I enjoy participating while I learn, it is easier for me to grasp concepts this way. Nurses have to learn so much, but there are not enough teachers or learning spaces to accommodate the global nursing student population. VLE’s help nurses all over the world learn and collaborate. Research studies about e-learning have concluded that infusing both e-learning and traditional teaching methods—which is known as blended learning—produce better results than teaching lessons without technology (De Bruyckere, Kirschner, and Kirschner, 2016). Also, VLE based courses offer a number of “concrete, scientifically based” pieces of advice that are adaptable to all learning levels and environments.

Virtual learning environment (VLE) integrates various technologies to accommodate and meet the needs of the adult learner despite his or her geographical location (Tuani Candido De Oliveira Salvador, Dos Santos Bezerril, Santos Mariz, Domingues Fernandes, Amado Martins, & Pereira Santos, 2017). Virtual learning environment allows exposure to knowledge development and knowledge sharing. Indeed, many strategies implemented by virtual learning environment foster innovation, competence, and effective performance.
At the beginning of the experience of VLE clear communication guides the learner through the learning environment. Following communication, interactive collaboration whether with the professor or other students inspires the learner to become familiar with the skills and knowledge that can facilitate the acquisition of new information (Tuani Candido De Oliveira Salvador, Dos Santos Bezerril, Santos Mariz, Domingues Fernandes, Amado Martins, & Pereira Santos, 2017). Among the many functionalities of the virtual learning environment, I really appreciate its learner-centered attribute. It empowers the learner by catering to his individual learning style and meeting his learning level. The engagement through VLE keeps the learner determined to reach set goals and succeed in the simulated learning environment. Characteristics like self-determination, spirit of inquiry, and teamwork acquired in the VLE milieu will justly serve nurses as they practice in their chosen specialty area.

Thanks for responding to my discussion. Advanced practice nursing must be different in that this degree requires a higher education not to mention another state board examination to gain credentials to practice in this new role. Howbeit we remain nurses just in another arena of the medical field. Although there is a difference, there are similarities as well. No matter the advanced practice specialty we have chosen, there is always an advantage to learning from an interactive virtual learning environment. The benefits of combining clinical with interactive virtual learning produces positive outcomes for not only the student but for the patients also. The provision of clarity around nursing roles brings with it, a sense of professional identity and the ability to provide consistent measures of outcome for the various roles and the different scopes of practice that nursing roles embody. Such role clarity is essential to understanding the difference between each specialty.
Along with learning from virtual learning environments, professional maturity and respect is required to accept that the various nursing roles complement each other, just as all nursing roles complement other health professional groups in the multidisciplinary team. Virtual learning does allow students to interactively learning with creativity and clarity in the theoretical foundation of advanced practice nursing. In fact, it has been referred to as the most important element for successful e-learning (Violante & Vessetti, 2013). I feel there is no replacement for onsite experience even with this information presented. With our education at present at Chamberlain College of Nursing, the faculty are utilizing a combination of virtual learning and practicum for nurses to gain the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities that are key to rendering quality care to our patients. It is also appropriate to utilize this very helpful tool when educating the patient via the virtual environment to gain knowledge regarding their condition.
