Mental health disorders impact individuals across the lifespan, and psychotherapists have both the responsibility and the honor of helping these individuals heal. From the initial assessment to termination of therapy, the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner must be prepared to use evidence-based therapies to effectively treat patients and improve mental health outcomes. This course builds on your knowledge of psychopathology and diagnostic reasoning and is designed to develop your understanding of psychotherapy interventions and their efficacies, as well as the disorders they treat.

In this course, you explore multiple modalities of psychotherapy with individuals, families, and groups. With the growing demand for more accessible and cost-efficient mental health care, group and family therapy are becoming increasingly popular treatment options. You will apply psychotherapeutic counseling theories, techniques, and tools across these modalities to assess, diagnose, and treat clients with mental health disorders across the lifespan.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Psychotherapy involves giving more than “good advice.” For the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) to be effective, deliberate approaches to therapy must be consistent with evidence-based practices. Learners in this course examine a variety of therapeutic techniques that can be used during psychotherapy sessions with individuals, families, and groups across the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based applications of various therapeutic approaches for a wide range of psychiatric issues.
