Re: Topic 2 DQ 2
The public views of the nursing profession vary depending on the era in which reference is being made. In early nursing, the profession was viewed as meaningless. Nursing was carried out by using various methods. These methods were repeated until a correct path was identified to treat patients. Also, nursing was practiced by the impoverish and unsavory (Dean, 2018). This caused the standard of nursing to be accepted at a lower level. Nursing was faced with unjust treatment, which caused the public to have an undesirable view of the profession. As Florence Nightingale emerged nursing standards became acceptable, which then caused nursing to be viewed as a good profession by public (Dean, 2018).
The public can be influenced by many variables. For example, the internet with its many websites and applications are highly influential. Content that poses a negative threat to the nursing profession can be shared throughout the media without regards to its effects on the public. Using the media to educate the public by explaining the role of nursing and the scope of its practice will prevent miseducation. The public needs to be familiarized with what nurses do and the positive effects the role has on patients care outcomes. Nurses are in every community where their roles range from direct patient care to case management (ANA). Nurses advocate for their patients making sure that they are treated fairly and safely. For example, when a medication is ordered for a patient the nurses’ role is to make sure that medication order meets the criteria for that patient to prevent medication errors that may pose a threat to the patient’s life.

Sample Answer 2 for NRS 430 Describe how the nursing profession is viewed by the general public
As our book states, nursing is viewed differently through different eras (Dean, 2018). Nursing has not always been shown in a positive light and has faced its share of criticism (Dean, 2018). Even today in an advanced nation nursing is still criticized while also still seen as a noble career choice. I think the public perceives nursing as a selfless career choice but only if you are going beyond your limits and exhausted because that is what is often depicted of nurses.
Different cultures and nationalities have different perspectives on nursing (Dean, 2018). In nursing school, we are taught how to care for the patient holistically. So, this means when the patient is in your care you respect their wishes and cultural beliefs. Being culturally aware and accepting is a big component of nursing. How well a nurse does this will weigh heavily on how one perceives the nurse and the profession. Hollywood movies show nursing sometimes in this not-so-noble light (Dean, 2018). There are shows that depict drug addict nurses and are nominated for Grammys. Now I must say the acting and portrayal of a drug-addicted nurse was good, but maybe they were trying to bring light to a situation. Unfortunately, this isn’t the best show to represent all nurses.
Nursing is constantly evolving to identify and meet the needs of people (ANA). The work and the world of nursing are constantly evolving, but the goal remains the same and that is patient safety and obtaining the best possible outcome for your patients. The way we as nurses can educate the public is by retaining our credentials, completing our continuing education courses, and staying up to date with the latest policies and procedures. We must continue to integrate critical thinking while using the nursing process for each patient to meet their needs (ANA). The ANA has incorporated the following guidelines: the standards of nursing and standards of performance as the nursing profession evolves (Dean, 2018). The standards of practice are described as the level of nursing care expected with the nursing process (Dean, 2018). The standards of practice use competencies, this helps nurses understand their expectations of them.

Sample Answer 3 for NRS 430 Describe how the nursing profession is viewed by the general public
The general public recognized nurses as one of the most respectful professions, especially after COVID-19, and admiration for nurses grew. After the pandemic, I started seeing big flyers, commercials, and posts on social media recognizing nurses as heroes, which before hadn’t been seen. However, every time I mentioned that I was a nursing student, the only comment that I kept receiving was that nurses make a lot of money or that the career is well paid, but nothing else. People don’t value the skills, the long hours of work and education, and all the knowledge we need because, besides the long hours of studying during nursing school, it is an ongoing education. I don’t think the public fully understands the immense stress and the big responsibility we have on our shoulders. According to Hoeve et.al (2013), nurses have become healthcare professionals in their own right who possess a great deal of knowledge. However, the public does not always value the skills and competencies nurses have acquired through education and innovation. Patients will have a perception of nursing based on their past experiences, whether the nurse was good or bad. Sometimes nurses are underappreciated by other professionals as well. When I was working as a LVN, many times I was depreciated by registered nurses and doctors by making comments that I wasn’t a real nurse, or even patients would demand a registered nurse for their care. I currently work as a home health nurse, and it has been the most satisfactory job that I have ever had as a nurse. There are many ways to educate the general public by showing professionalism and providing basic information through social media, TV shows, community events, or during school hours. The scope of practice for nurses has been changing with time in order to provide the most efficient quality of care to patients. According to Berg (2022), it is the gold standard for a nurse’s professional responsibilities and duties. Some employers can push the limits of what nurses can legally do, which compromises patient safety and jeopardizes your nursing career.

NRS 430 Topic 3 DQ 1
Nursing as a practice has evolved over time from men being the main care providers to a time when early nurses were considered witches to today where a nurse practitioner is a primary care provider working alongside physicians to offer care to diverse patients and health populations (Silva & Ferreira, 2021). From the Christianity era when men were caregivers and nursing was a religious vocation, to a time when women doing nursing for the ill and aged had to overcome the speculation of nursing being evil. The entry of Florence Nightingale christened as the lady with the lamp demonstrated the emergence of nursing as a profession where one needed to get trained to practice. Nightingale illustrated this approach by compiling her thoughts and published “Notes on Nursing in 1859 (McMenamin et al., 2019). Nightingale also illustrated the importance of nursing during the Crimean War leading to more women participating in caring for their husbands, brothers, and fathers hurt in the American Civil War. Nursing earned a respected position as profession with the successful opening of The Nightingale Training School for Nurses in England in 1860. By 1798, physicians who had recognized the role played by nurses initiated courses for those interested in nursing in the United States. For instance, the Nurse Society of Philadelphia trained women in caring for mothers during childbirth and postpartum period.
The evolution of nursing has been tremendous with the profession now considered one of the leading and pivotal in healthcare provision. Today, nurses have multiple areas of education, specialties, and follow models like evidence-based practice (EBP). The modern nurse can earn terminal degrees like Doctor of Nursing practice (DNP) and specialize in an area to enhance quality care. The use of technology has transformed nursing with specialties like informatics nursing emerging as critical to improving care provision (Rea et al., 2020). Nurses are leaders in healthcare provision alongside physicians with increased responsibilities and roles based on reforms like the Affordable Care Act and models like value-based purchasing. As primary care providers, nurses focus on preventive care and community health screening to reduce the cost burden associated with healthcare provision. Nurses have increased autonomy as they can practice without the supervision of a physician in states with full scope of practice authority.
