Regular physical exercise and activity significantly help prevent and manage various chronic illnesses, including Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and Hypertension. T2DM and hypertension are the most prevalent lifestyle diseases attributed to a sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary habits. Physical exercise and activity help prevent T2DM by promoting weight loss and ideal body weight and reducing cholesterol levels (Colberg et al., 2016). High blood cholesterol levels impair blood glucose absorption resulting in hyperglycemia. Exercise can thus promote the reuptake of glucose in the blood, thus improving blood glucose levels.
Regular exercises also increase blood glucose reuptake in patients diagnosed with T2DM, thus promoting glycemic control. T2DM patients are at risk of cardiac diseases. Regular exercises boost cardiovascular function and prevent heart failure conditions in patients with T2DM and hypertension (Unger et al., 2020). Furthermore, Physical exercise and activity prevent and manages hypertension by boosting heart health and lowering blood pressure (Unger et al., 2020). It lowers cholesterol levels, which cause atherosclerosis that alters blood flow resulting in elevated blood pressure.
According to the CDC survey in 2017-2018, hypertension prevalence among adults aged 18 and above was 45.4%. The prevalence was higher among males with 51.0% than females, with 39.7%. The prevalence of hypertension increased with age; 18–39 had 22.4%; 40–59 had 54.5%; 60 and over had 74.5% (Ostchega et al., 2020). The prevalence was higher among non-Hispanic blacks, with 57.1% than non-Hispanic whites, with 43.6% and Hispanic with 43.7% (Ostchega et al., 2020). According to the National Diabetes Statistics Report 2020, 34.2 million Americans had diabetes. In addition, 88 million American adults had prediabetes (CDC, 2020). New diabetes cases were higher among Hispanics and non-Hispanic blacks than non-Hispanic Asians and non-Hispanic whites.
To assist clients in incorporating exercise and physical activity into their lives, I would collaborate to develop a daily physical exercise plan of at least 30 minutes, five days a week. The American Diabetes Association recommends moderate-intensity exercises 30-45 minutes a day at least five days a week (Colberg et al., 2016). It also recommends strength training exercises at least twice a week, but not two days consecutively. I would recommend clients to take part in aerobic and muscle strengthening exercises. When beginning the exercise plan, I would recommend moderate aerobic exercises such as jogging, biking, strolling, and swimming. Besides, I would advise the clients to increase the intensity as they tolerate the exercises (Colberg et al., 2016). I would introduce high-intensity and muscle-strengthening exercises such as running, crunches, free weights, and squats with increased tolerance.
