THE HISTORY OF NURSING RESEARCH-EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE.
Nursing research dates back to the 18th and 19th century where nurse leaders like Florence Nightingale played great roles on the same. Florence Nightingale is regarded as one of the key leaders and pioneers of modern day nursing. Her work came to light during the Crimean war where she stresses on the need for proper nutrition, sanitation and enhanced patient care. She demonstrated the impact these aspects had on the health of communities and populations through statistical analysis. She set the pace this early through the application of the research principles and hence nursing was viewed as profession that was data and science based. Getting into the 20th century, the concept of nursing research gained momentum and more so in the United States. Nursing programs were established in learning institutions like universities. This enabled academic scrutiny of the various aspects in nursing. It around 1950s and 1960s, nursing organizations and the Federal government began funding the various initiatives on research cementing the research role in the nursing profession (Fletcher et al., 2022). Nursing theories were also developed during this period and hence offered much guidance to the nursing practice and more so in research.
Moving forward to the 1970s to 80’s, the nursing field was characterized by the doctoral programs growth as new nursing researchers were coming up. Specialized nursing research journals were created together with National Institute of Nursing Research that was established in 1985 (Mulkey, 2023). These were key developments that helped integrate nursing research with clinical practice. This has been embraced to modern day and has revolutionized the nursing practice ensuring that patients receive optimal care. Research has been an essential aspect more so towards the evidence based practice (EBP). EBP relates to the application of current undisputed best evidence in making major decisions in regard to patient care (D’Antonio et al., 2020). Nursing research has been a great contributor of this evidence ensuring that the interventions adopted are safe and effective. Nurses therefore have to remain updated on the latest evidence and research to enhance patient outcomes, quality of care and as well achieve care that is cost effective. It is clear that nursing research has greatly evolved more so from the foundational works by Florence Nightingale to an advanced and sophisticated practice important for evidence based practice. Nursing research has really led to better patient outcomes and advanced nursing practice.

Sample Answer 2 for NRS 445 Discuss the importance of nursing research as it relates to applying evidence in practice (evidence-based practice)
From Florence Nightingale collecting the original research on soldiers dying from injuries to the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, nursing research has evolved via good and bad intentions. Nightingale collected information on wounded soldiers during the Crimean War and saw that they were dying from preventable deaths, simply by keeping the environment clean which saved hundreds of lives (Falkner et al., p. 19). The Tuskegee Syphilis Study 600 African American men were being treated for “bad blood” simply to see how syphilis progressed in humans (Falkner). When this was discovered due to the publication of a news article it led to mass outrage among the public as it brought back reminders of the horrors that the Nazi regime conducting research on holocaust victims, and brought about change. This change was providing patients with informed consent and providing them with the knowledge to make a fully vetted decision (Falkner).
While knowledge and the acquisition of knowledge is important, EBP in nursing must follow the nursing process and respond to the issue using the best available evidence to make sure the patient is safe (Stannard 2021). It is up to us as new nurses to keep the curiosity of Florence Nightingale active to find ways to better assist our clients on the road to recovery.

Sample Answer 3 for NRS 445 Discuss the importance of nursing research as it relates to applying evidence in practice (evidence-based practice)
The history of nursing research traces back to Florence Nightingale, who emphasized the importance of systematic observation and data collection to improve patient care during the Crimean War in the 19th century. Another documented time when evidence-based research was performed, was during World War II, when German physicians experimented on prisoners of concentration camps. These tests/procedures were done without consent or anesthesia (GCU, 2022) and were often done for the purpose of “unethical medical experimentation, including “facilitating the survival of Axis military personnel”, testing different medications for illnesses and injuries, and advancing “the racial and ideological tenets of the Nazi worldview (GCU, 2022). Research has evolved significantly since then. “To determine which approaches to care result in the best possible care, the effectiveness of each approach specific to a chosen population must be investigated’’ (GCU, 2022,. Nursing research is used to test theories and the efficiency or impact of the research before it is applied as a form of treatment. Modern research is currently done through evidence-based practice, which uses the most advanced research data to reduce morbidity and mortality rates and improve outcomes and quality of care. As nurses, using evidence-based practice in our care, we can be sure that we are doing what is in the best interest of our patients.
