Some prior knowledge that I think all of us probably possesses is recognizing, as well as acknowledging, the significance of technology and how it is integrated into our everyday workflow. Additionally, from what I’m gathering about Nursing Informatics (based off the weekly objectives), is that Nursing Informatics takes a multi-faceted approach to improving/enhancing the varying entities we use while at the job. Why is informatics important in healthcare? Think about the person who translates for your patients who are not fluent in English. That is the easy answer. We use technology to translate. We mine data meaning we collect the data collected when you and others chart and use that information to find out outcomes. We work with the IT team to translate medical terms they don’t understand. My joke is go say STAT in the math department at a college ans they will think something totally different than what we will in health care.
What are the different kinds of informatics, It is a technical answer as you can really do anything with Informatics. Again Informatics is all about using technology to improve healthcare. I use it in education. I collect data on our nurse resident program and nursing students. I also use project management to organize and coordinate the programs. I learned all of that in the informatics programs. There are many in informatics who work on say the EPIC, MediTech, etc. teams. Some go into quality for data collection for DNV, TJC, etc. I could go on but you get the idea.
How has it improved through the years? Like all technology with time comes change and improvement. Healthcare was slow to adopt technology. We now have health information managmeent systems that talk to other systems (Interface) and an example can be medication. If someone has a car crash and comes in they can now look up what drugs the person was on. Stores like CVS now know if we have drug hoppers who go from one drug store to another to get narcotics filled. Charting is now turned into data. When you put in the fall risk there are systems behind the sceen that collect demographics so we can tell who has the higher fall risk (think how diuretics and falls are related) and so on…

The knowledge of these two objectives is foundational and requires more refining to advance it and understand its application.
Conversely, the evolution of health information technologies and nursing informatics as an objective is still new to me as I have limited knowledge about it. Health technologies and nursing informatics are revolutionizing healthcare delivery as nurses leverage these components to interpret patient data and document it in a better manner for effective decision-making (Nelson, 2020). However, I have limited knowledge about the evolution of these technologies.
The course-related topics that I would like to discuss with the instructor and classmates include nursing informatics, healthcare technologies, and information systems, nursing informatics for clinical decision-making and health equity promotion, and the informatics tools for nurses’ continuing education and professional development. These topics are a core concern and their application in nursing practice (Tobon et al., 2022). The other concern about this course is having sufficient time to cover all the areas since the topics are wide and offer critical knowledge to enhance care delivery.
