Before I became a traveling nurse, I got really familiar with the hospital I worked at back home. I think getting to know my staff, taking charge when needed, and deescalating are strategies I have used in health care organizations. Because I worked in a small hospital for a few years, I got to know my staff well including the nurses, nursing assistants, techs, transporters, licensed vocational nurses, and secretaries. Because I knew my staff as individual workers and as people, I knew some of each of their weaknesses and strengths. I could tell when certain staff members felt overwhelmed or were having a better day than others. I was willing to take charge in leading, helping, or problem solving whenever someone needed help, or the unit was very busy. When nurses had patients that were not so easy to care for, I was usually always aware of the difficulties the nurses were having prior to any problems arising. When a patient would have an outburst and have an issue with their nurse, the nurse would usually come to me and ask for help. I was able to deescalate situations and usually find a solution for the time being; this included hearing what the patient and nurse had to say separately and either finding common ground or finding a different nurse (possibly even myself) to take over care of the patient. I felt that people would come to me when I was working for my knowledge/opinion on what should or could be done insinuations and knew they could depend on me to help keep things organized and functioning and smoothly as possible.
