Evidence-based practice involves integrating the best available evidence with clinical knowledge and expertise while considering the patient’s unique needs for optimal patient outcomes. It also means choosing effective scientifically validated methods to meet patient needs. Clinicians who use EBP recognize the value of research for their patient population (Wilson & Austria, 2021).
3 strategies that I can use to incorporate into my current practice would be (1) asking the question? (2) finding the best available evidence to answer the question (3) identifying strategies to overcome barriers to EBP implementation in my current workplace.
Asking the question or “trigger” is the start of the EBP process. I want to maintain my curiosity and always find better ways to do things. There is always an area of improvement. It takes somebody with a curious mind to find these areas to help improve workflow and ultimately, patient outcomes.
This course, and the prerequisite course, has helped me with strategies on how to search for evidence to support EBP proposal. In my current organization, there is a department that is responsible for developing and updating policies and procedures. Being able to find ways to improve patient outcomes by being able to find the best available evidence and submit a proposal is something that I am looking forward to in my practice.
Lastly, developing and implementing strategies to overcome identified barriers to EBP implementation or any quality improvement initiative would definitely help our organization in achieving better patient outcomes and better staff retention.
