Sample Answer 3 for NURS 6050 GLOBAL HEALTHCARE COMPARISON MATRIX AND NARRATIVE STATEMENT
At the age of 21, I submitted an application for the WIC program. I consider myself fortunate to have been involved in this program during my time in nursing school, especially considering that I was pregnant with my first son, who is currently nine years old. I was fortunate to have access to formula for him. The application procedure was arduous and challenging. Several meetings occur. Obtaining an appointment is a challenging task. Entering as a walk-in required spending an entire day waiting in a lengthy queue outdoors, regardless of the prevailing weather conditions. I undertook the task out of need, though it proved to be a challenging endeavor. Participating in the WIC program gave me a feeling of reassurance over my kid’s well-being. However, I am interested in discussing the culinary offerings incorporated within these programs. Do the foods provided by this program offer sufficient nutritious value for our bodies? I have a vivid recollection of all the high-sugar beverages that were permissible for purchase with WIC funds. I abstained from purchasing drinks and cereals due to my intention of avoiding processed meals. In my estimation, I would receive around $11 in exchange for fresh produce at that specific period. Nutrition and diet are merely a component of a wholesome lifestyle. WIC participants are provided with healthcare experts, dental treatments, vaccines, and social assistance, such as drug abuse and domestic violence counseling (n.d.)
Attending to the Social Determinants of Health significantly influences individuals’ well-being. The place of birth, level of education, and economic stability significantly influence an individual’s life. I was born and brought up by a single mother with a somewhat limited income, rendering me eligible for the WIC program. As I pursued more education, I secured a more lucrative employment opportunity, enabling me to adequately support my kid and myself. By acquiring further knowledge, I became capable of making improved and healthier decisions, not due to governmental influence, but rather by actively seeking information on subjects that interested me, such as nutrition.
One of the primary objectives of Healthy People 2030 is to address the social determinants of health (SDOH). Establish social, physical, and economic conditions that foster the achievement of optimal health and well-being for everyone (Healthy People, 2023).
Sample Answer 4 for NURS 6050 GLOBAL HEALTHCARE COMPARISON MATRIX AND NARRATIVE STATEMENT
The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies different issues that affect people’s health, including resistance to drugs, and antimicrobial resistance. According to the WHO, antimicrobial resistance has negative effects on the global efforts to end certain diseases, especially infectious and chronic conditions (World Health Organization, 2023). Different countries, including the United States and Canada, have developed policies to address antimicrobial resistance. The purpose of this comparison matrix and narrative statement is to explore the issue and advocate interventions through social change to prevent its occurrence.
Part 1
Global Healthcare Issue | Antimicrobial Resistance
Description | The development of antibiotics, antiviral medications, and antimalarial drugs is considered a critical success in improving health among populations in different parts of the world. However, antimicrobial resistance is a threat to the successes aimed at reducing and preventing diseases like salmonellosis, tuberculosis, and pneumonia among others (American Society for Microbiology, 2023). The inability to have effective interventions for these conditions presents a threat to patients suffering from these diseases and even surgical processes.
Country | United States
| Canada |
Describe the policy in each country related to the identified healthcare issue | The U.S. has a federal policy focused on three aspects of antimicrobial resistance. These include tracking for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, increasing the life of current antibiotics, and improving the discovery and development of new antibiotic strains and interventions (CDC, 2023). | The policy in Canada focuses on increasing awareness about antimicrobial resistance, its impacts, and associated ailments. The policy also identifies populations and individuals at most risk and offers resources for different activities like research, surveillance, and occurrence in animals. Government of Canada, 2023) |
What are the strengths of this policy? | The policy’s strengths include a proactive approach, partnerships with other players, investing in research to develop new antimicrobials, increasing understanding among the population, and better surveillance CDC, 2023). | Like the U.S., policy, the Canadian policy is proactive, values collaboration and partnership with all stakeholders, and enhances understanding of the issue through surveillance, research, and education (Canadian government, 2023). |
What are the weaknesses of this policy? | The policy relies on government funding and is rigid, with changes being limited since antimicrobials remain largely the same. | Conversely, the policy depends mainly on federal funding, has limited scope, and requires an expanded approach to the issue. |
Explain how the social determinants of health may impact the specified global health issue. (Be specific and provide examples) | Social determinants of health impact the issue in different ways. Access to healthcare improves knowledge levels on antimicrobial resistance and effective or proper use. Socioeconomic status dictates whether individuals and health populations can access services and reduce the chances of developing resistance. | Social determinants of health impact the issue as they influence access to health care and consumption of information. Education improves awareness and approach to antibiotic resistance.
|
How has each country’s government addressed cost, quality, and access to the selected global health issue? | The policy mandates the federal government to provide different interventions like prevention, treatment, and enforcement. Through these aspects, individuals can access quality care and reduce costs since the government provides resources in different areas of the interventions (CDC, 2021). | The Canadian government funds all activities focused on antimicrobial resistance, from prevention to treatment and enforcement. Through these activities, the public enhances its information and ways to reduce resistance.
|
How has the identified health policy impacted the health of the global population? (Be specific and provide examples) | The policy means that more people across the world can prevent antimicrobial resistance and attain better health. The policy means that chances of increased resistance to antibiotics reduce as the population gets information on preventive approaches and measures. | The policy means that there will be a reduction in the prevalence of individuals encountering antimicrobial resistance because of the decrease in Canada. It also enhances access to quality care, starting with the provision of information. |
Describe the potential impact of the identified health policy on the role of nurses in each country. | The policy enhances nurses’ role in providing information to at-risk individuals. The nurse can also enhance surveillance and patient education activities to improve awareness.
| The policy means that nurses should actively engage in patient education, contribute to surveillance of the condition, and offer patient education to enhance awareness.
|
Explain how global health issues impact local healthcare organizations and policies in both countries. (Be specific and provide examples) | Drug resistance impacts local healthcare organizations through increased cost of care and reduced productivity of the population, especially those affected by chronic conditions requiring medications (WHO, 2023). For instance, the cost of managing drug-resistant infections is high. Secondly, people take time to recover and become productive again. | Global health issues like antimicrobial resistance impact local healthcare organizations as they increase the cost of care through more resource allocation (WHO, 2023). For instance, dealing with antibiotic resistance requires more resources for research and other interventions to reduce the prevalence.
|
General Notes/Comments | The policy uses a generalized approach to antimicrobial resistance. Consequently, the federal government and its agencies should consider improving these aspects to improve impacts on the target population. | The policy is general and should be reviewed to ensure that it gives specific approaches to reducing antimicrobial resistance among those affected.
|
Part 2
Antimicrobial resistance remains a critical issue as advanced by the World Health Organization (WHO). The policies developed by both the U.S. and Canadian governments are largely reactive and general. They focus more on surveillance and developing new medications to counter those resistant to treatment. However, these policies ignore that antimicrobials are prescribed and used daily for the conditions leading to their resistance. A global perspective or lens into local practice and understanding the role of a nurse leader in this situation are necessary to increase information and awareness. Having a global perspective in local practice will allow nurses to understand the magnitude of the issue and its effects on health populations (WHO, 2023). I will advocate for this perspective in local practice by encouraging nurses to expand their perceptions and imaginations. Nurse leaders should have a vision of improving interventions to reduce antimicrobial resistance as they can get patients from different parts of the world for treatment due to the condition.
The integration of a global perspective into local practice for nurse leaders presents and contributes to social change in different ways. Firstly, it improves understanding of the health issue from a global level, especially in population health. Secondly, it means that nurse leaders should widen their imagination and integrate a global approach to healthcare issues affecting their workplace and employees. They should influence policy-making and implementation through effective collaboration with all stakeholders (CDC, 2023). For instance, patient profiling ensures that they get culturally competent care, especially those with antimicrobial resistance problems. Nurses can leverage information resources to develop drug resistance strategies for different health populations.
Conclusion
The policies by Canada and the United States on antimicrobial resistance are founded on evidence-based practice (EBP) and take a proactive approach. However, they should be more realistic and practical by expanding the role of nurses in information and awareness through patient education. The two countries advance the current policies to reduce the cost of care and enhance quality of life.

NURS 6050 NURS 6050 Assignment Agenda Comparison Grid and Fact Sheet or Talking Points Brief UHC FINAL
Agenda Comparison Grid and Fact Sheet or Talking Points Brief Assignment Template for Part 1 and Part 2
Part 1: Agenda Comparison Grid
Identify the Population Health concern you selected. | Universal Health Care (UHC)
| ||
Describe the Population Health concern you selected and the factors that contribute to it. | Universal health care is where quality medical services are provided to all citizens regardless of their ability to pay. However, in the United States, Access to quality healthcare usually depends on an individual’s income and employment status. Over the past two decades, policies have been implemented through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) leading to increased access to affordable healthcare services to millions of those who were previously uninsured, non-Medicare eligible children and adults (Wang, Schmidt, & Mathur, 2020).
| ||
Administration (President Name) | President Trump | President Obama | President Bush |
Describe the administrative agenda focus related to this issue for the current and two previous presidents. | President Trump allowed the use of the Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), in addition to providing the block grant Medicaid, modifying the existing laws which prohibit the sale of health insurance across state lines, and decreasing the cost of healthcare services and drugs (Sacks et al., 2020). Generally, he has tried very hard to abolish and limit the use of President Obama’s implemented Affordable Healthcare Act. | President Obama came up with and implemented the Affordable Care Act on March 23, 2010. He also promoted market-based reforms and the incorporation of high technology in the healthcare system for the provision of better and affordable healthcare. He also increased Medicaid funding for increased coverage (Wang, Schmidt, & Mathur, 2020). | President Bush reduced the high cost of health care (Bloom, Khoury, & Subbaraman, 2018). He also provided more affordable insurance for low-income families and small business employees (Bloom, Khoury, & Subbaraman, 2018). |
Identify the allocations of financial and other resources that the current and two previous presidents dedicated to this issue. | President Trump allocated $675 billion in net mandatory savings to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. He also allocated $5 billion in state funding to the Department of Health and Human Services to help in addressing opioid abuse, treatment, and prevention (Wang, Schmidt, & Mathur, 2020). Lastly, $770 million was allocated towards Health care Fraud and Abuse control to improve the integrity of the Medicaid Program. | A total of $300 billion was allocated towards the development of the ACA. A total of $40 billion was allocated towards the Children’s health insurance program (Wang, Schmidt, & Mathur, 2020). Lastly, $1.5 billion was allocated towards the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program. | Allocated 82 billion towards Medicare and Medicaid. He also spends $28.6 billion on long-term care insurance cover (Sacks et al., 2020). |
Explain how each of the presidential administrations approached the issue. | Trump gave an Executive Order to lower the financial burden from ACA, to promote transparency to the healthcare system (Wang, Schmidt, & Mathur, 2020). He also expanded the short-term duration of the present healthcare plans. | Obama ensured that all Children had health care insurance coverage. He also made sure that both public and private insurance covered all essential medical services (Bloom, Khoury, & Subbaraman, 2018). Lastly, he expanded the eligibility for CHIP and Medicaid. | President Bush signing into law the Medicare Modernization Act creating a universal entitlement for the hidden cost associated with prescription drug coverage within Medicare (Bloom, Khoury, & Subbaraman, 2018). He also Established a Tax-Free Health Savings Account. |
Part 2: Agenda Comparison Grid Analysis
Administration (President Name) | President Trump | President Obama | President Bush |
Which administrative agency would most likely be responsible for helping you address the healthcare issue you selected?
| President Trump has contributed greatly towards the reduction of Medicaid insurance which makes it harder for low-income individuals to be able to afford healthcare services (Bloom, Khoury, & Subbaraman, 2018). However, allocation of funds towards the development of the healthcare industry will help in increasing the accessibility of healthcare services. | The Affordable Care Act and increase Medicare and Medicaid services will help in reducing the cost of healthcare hence making it easily accessible to most Americans (Sacks et al., 2020). | President Bush also helped in incorporating high technology in health provision, making it more efficient and easily accessible to consumers (Bloom, Khoury, & Subbaraman, 2018). |
How do you think your selected healthcare issue might get on the agenda for the current and two previous presidents? How does it stay there? | Affordable healthcare provision will sustain its position in the agenda of all administrations, with room for improvement (Bloom, Khoury, & Subbaraman, 2018). | Patient Protective and Affordable Care Act, with an aim of universal health cover, will remain an important agenda in helping reduce the cost and improve the quality of care provided (Sacks et al., 2020). | Bush’s agenda in utilizing advanced technology in the current healthcare system, will still hold a standard position in discussions concerning the improvement of the quality and affordability of care (Sacks et al., 2020). As such, advancements will be made for better and improved care provision. |
Who would you choose to be the entrepreneur/ champion/sponsor of the healthcare issue you selected for the current and two previous presidents? | President Obama will remain to be champion in providing affordable healthcare services (Bloom, Khoury, & Subbaraman, 2018). Ever since the approval of the Patient Protective and Affordable Care Act, American citizens have been able to enjoy the benefits of Medicare and Medicaid in settling hospital bills. The Acts has also helped in reducing the cost and improving the quality of care provided. |
Part 3: Talking Points Brief
Universal health cover allows an individual to access healthcare services without financial hardship. These services include a full range of essential care services, from health prevention and promotion, rehabilitation, palliative care, and treatment among others. currently, more than half the number of people worldwide are unable to access all the healthcare services they require. Consequently, more than 100 million people have also been pushed into extreme poverty as a result of the increased cost of care services. As such, there is a need for the government of the United States to establish and implement policies aimed at making health a reality for all citizens. The past three presidents have worked hard towards increasing the accessibility and affordability of healthcare services to low-income individuals (Bloom, Khoury, & Subbaraman, 2018). For instance, the implementation of the Affordable Care Act by President Obama has plaid a significant role in increasing the number of individuals with Medicare and Medicaid insurance for easily accessible and affordable quality healthcare services.
Nurses play a significant role in shaping the healthcare system through contributing and making suggestions on which policies to be implemented. For instance, it is the role of nurses to educate the public on the need of encouraging the government to promote programs aimed at increasing the government health budget, for purposes of lowering the cost of healthcare services to increase the number of health beneficiaries (Bloom, Khoury, & Subbaraman, 2018). Consequently, for strong-based universal health care, the community must be sensitized on how the government will be able to cater to the costs of healthcare for its citizens. This makes it easy for people to be aware of their rights and what the government is doing to satisfy their essential needs and interests.
