Sample Answer 3 for NURS 6050 GLOBAL HEALTHCARE COMPARISON MATRIX AND NARRATIVE STATEMENT
At the age of 21, I submitted an application for the WIC program. I consider myself fortunate to have been involved in this program during my time in nursing school, especially considering that I was pregnant with my first son, who is currently nine years old. I was fortunate to have access to formula for him. The application procedure was arduous and challenging. Several meetings occur. Obtaining an appointment is a challenging task. Entering as a walk-in required spending an entire day waiting in a lengthy queue outdoors, regardless of the prevailing weather conditions. I undertook the task out of need, though it proved to be a challenging endeavor. Participating in the WIC program gave me a feeling of reassurance over my kid’s well-being. However, I am interested in discussing the culinary offerings incorporated within these programs. Do the foods provided by this program offer sufficient nutritious value for our bodies? I have a vivid recollection of all the high-sugar beverages that were permissible for purchase with WIC funds. I abstained from purchasing drinks and cereals due to my intention of avoiding processed meals. In my estimation, I would receive around $11 in exchange for fresh produce at that specific period. Nutrition and diet are merely a component of a wholesome lifestyle. WIC participants are provided with healthcare experts, dental treatments, vaccines, and social assistance, such as drug abuse and domestic violence counseling (n.d.)
Attending to the Social Determinants of Health significantly influences individuals’ well-being. The place of birth, level of education, and economic stability significantly influence an individual’s life. I was born and brought up by a single mother with a somewhat limited income, rendering me eligible for the WIC program. As I pursued more education, I secured a more lucrative employment opportunity, enabling me to adequately support my kid and myself. By acquiring further knowledge, I became capable of making improved and healthier decisions, not due to governmental influence, but rather by actively seeking information on subjects that interested me, such as nutrition.
One of the primary objectives of Healthy People 2030 is to address the social determinants of health (SDOH). Establish social, physical, and economic conditions that foster the achievement of optimal health and well-being for everyone (Healthy People, 2023).
Sample Answer 4 for NURS 6050 GLOBAL HEALTHCARE COMPARISON MATRIX AND NARRATIVE STATEMENT
The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies different issues that affect people’s health, including resistance to drugs, and antimicrobial resistance. According to the WHO, antimicrobial resistance has negative effects on the global efforts to end certain diseases, especially infectious and chronic conditions (World Health Organization, 2023). Different countries, including the United States and Canada, have developed policies to address antimicrobial resistance. The purpose of this comparison matrix and narrative statement is to explore the issue and advocate interventions through social change to prevent its occurrence.
Part 1
Global Healthcare Issue | Antimicrobial Resistance
Description | The development of antibiotics, antiviral medications, and antimalarial drugs is considered a critical success in improving health among populations in different parts of the world. However, antimicrobial resistance is a threat to the successes aimed at reducing and preventing diseases like salmonellosis, tuberculosis, and pneumonia among others (American Society for Microbiology, 2023). The inability to have effective interventions for these conditions presents a threat to patients suffering from these diseases and even surgical processes.
Country | United States
| Canada |
Describe the policy in each country related to the identified healthcare issue | The U.S. has a federal policy focused on three aspects of antimicrobial resistance. These include tracking for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, increasing the life of current antibiotics, and improving the discovery and development of new antibiotic strains and interventions (CDC, 2023). | The policy in Canada focuses on increasing awareness about antimicrobial resistance, its impacts, and associated ailments. The policy also identifies populations and individuals at most risk and offers resources for different activities like research, surveillance, and occurrence in animals. Government of Canada, 2023) |
What are the strengths of this policy? | The policy’s strengths include a proactive approach, partnerships with other players, investing in research to develop new antimicrobials, increasing understanding among the population, and better surveillance CDC, 2023). | Like the U.S., policy, the Canadian policy is proactive, values collaboration and partnership with all stakeholders, and enhances understanding of the issue through surveillance, research, and education (Canadian government, 2023). |
What are the weaknesses of this policy? | The policy relies on government funding and is rigid, with changes being limited since antimicrobials remain largely the same. | Conversely, the policy depends mainly on federal funding, has limited scope, and requires an expanded approach to the issue. |
Explain how the social determinants of health may impact the specified global health issue. (Be specific and provide examples) | Social determinants of health impact the issue in different ways. Access to healthcare improves knowledge levels on antimicrobial resistance and effective or proper use. Socioeconomic status dictates whether individuals and health populations can access services and reduce the chances of developing resistance. | Social determinants of health impact the issue as they influence access to health care and consumption of information. Education improves awareness and approach to antibiotic resistance.
|
How has each country’s government addressed cost, quality, and access to the selected global health issue? | The policy mandates the federal government to provide different interventions like prevention, treatment, and enforcement. Through these aspects, individuals can access quality care and reduce costs since the government provides resources in different areas of the interventions (CDC, 2021). | The Canadian government funds all activities focused on antimicrobial resistance, from prevention to treatment and enforcement. Through these activities, the public enhances its information and ways to reduce resistance.
|
How has the identified health policy impacted the health of the global population? (Be specific and provide examples) | The policy means that more people across the world can prevent antimicrobial resistance and attain better health. The policy means that chances of increased resistance to antibiotics reduce as the population gets information on preventive approaches and measures. | The policy means that there will be a reduction in the prevalence of individuals encountering antimicrobial resistance because of the decrease in Canada. It also enhances access to quality care, starting with the provision of information. |
Describe the potential impact of the identified health policy on the role of nurses in each country. | The policy enhances nurses’ role in providing information to at-risk individuals. The nurse can also enhance surveillance and patient education activities to improve awareness.
| The policy means that nurses should actively engage in patient education, contribute to surveillance of the condition, and offer patient education to enhance awareness.
|
Explain how global health issues impact local healthcare organizations and policies in both countries. (Be specific and provide examples) | Drug resistance impacts local healthcare organizations through increased cost of care and reduced productivity of the population, especially those affected by chronic conditions requiring medications (WHO, 2023). For instance, the cost of managing drug-resistant infections is high. Secondly, people take time to recover and become productive again. | Global health issues like antimicrobial resistance impact local healthcare organizations as they increase the cost of care through more resource allocation (WHO, 2023). For instance, dealing with antibiotic resistance requires more resources for research and other interventions to reduce the prevalence.
|
General Notes/Comments | The policy uses a generalized approach to antimicrobial resistance. Consequently, the federal government and its agencies should consider improving these aspects to improve impacts on the target population. | The policy is general and should be reviewed to ensure that it gives specific approaches to reducing antimicrobial resistance among those affected.
|
Part 2
Antimicrobial resistance remains a critical issue as advanced by the World Health Organization (WHO). The policies developed by both the U.S. and Canadian governments are largely reactive and general. They focus more on surveillance and developing new medications to counter those resistant to treatment. However, these policies ignore that antimicrobials are prescribed and used daily for the conditions leading to their resistance. A global perspective or lens into local practice and understanding the role of a nurse leader in this situation are necessary to increase information and awareness. Having a global perspective in local practice will allow nurses to understand the magnitude of the issue and its effects on health populations (WHO, 2023). I will advocate for this perspective in local practice by encouraging nurses to expand their perceptions and imaginations. Nurse leaders should have a vision of improving interventions to reduce antimicrobial resistance as they can get patients from different parts of the world for treatment due to the condition.
The integration of a global perspective into local practice for nurse leaders presents and contributes to social change in different ways. Firstly, it improves understanding of the health issue from a global level, especially in population health. Secondly, it means that nurse leaders should widen their imagination and integrate a global approach to healthcare issues affecting their workplace and employees. They should influence policy-making and implementation through effective collaboration with all stakeholders (CDC, 2023). For instance, patient profiling ensures that they get culturally competent care, especially those with antimicrobial resistance problems. Nurses can leverage information resources to develop drug resistance strategies for different health populations.
Conclusion
The policies by Canada and the United States on antimicrobial resistance are founded on evidence-based practice (EBP) and take a proactive approach. However, they should be more realistic and practical by expanding the role of nurses in information and awareness through patient education. The two countries advance the current policies to reduce the cost of care and enhance quality of life.

Sample Answer 4 for NURS 6050 GLOBAL HEALTHCARE COMPARISON MATRIX AND NARRATIVE STATEMENT
Mental health is a critical component of an individual’s wellness with millions across the world suffering from this issue. The World Health (WHO) opines that one in every eight people in the world lives with a mental disorder. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) asserts that one in every five US adults lives with a mental illness. Further, 1 in 25 US adults lives with a severe mental disorder like major depressive condition, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. In Italy, close to 24% of adults have a mental health issue with depression, schizophrenia, and psychoses being the most prevalent mental health disorder. The purpose of this comparison grid is to discuss and compare mental health situations and policies in the United States and Italy in Europe.
Part 1
Global Healthcare Issue | Mental Health
| |
Description | The mental health issue is a crisis that affects millions of individuals across the world based on the World Health Organization’s figures and surveys. The organization asserts that mental health affects close to 1 billion individuals across the world, a situation that worsened at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic (WHO, 2022). For instance, WHO says that the number of individuals living with serious mental issues like depressive disorders rose by close to 28% due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Those diagnosed with mental disorders do not have sufficient access to effective care and experience stigma, discrimination, and violation of their rights.
Country | United States | Italy |
Describe the policy in each country related to the identified healthcare issue | The U.S. faces a mental health crisis that necessitates the intervention of the Federal government through policy measures as outlined by the Biden administration. From 2022 to 2023, the federal government’s policy measures entail increasing access to mental health services through more resources using the American Rescue Plan (The White House, 2022). These include $27 billion in discretionary funding and $100 billion in mandatory funding for the next ten years aimed at implementing the national strategy on mental health and transforming behavioral services for all Americans, especially those with mental health issues and who have no resources. These measures focus on connecting more Americans to care and creating a continuum of support to improve mental health care. | With an increasing prevalence of mental disorders in the country, the Italian government the “Contribution to Support expenses associated with psychotherapy sessions (Psychologist Bonus) in 2021. The policy measure was aimed at helping individuals suffering from various mental health issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic like stress, anxiety, depression, and psychological fragility, and eligible for psychotherapeutic intervention. Initially designed to end in December 2022, the 2023 Budget Law, made the policy permanent to increase access to mental health services at a time when the country is facing a surge in the prevalence of mental health issues (Health Systems and Policy Monitor, 2023).
|
What are the strengths of this policy? | The strengths of the policy include its long-term focus, sufficient funding, and engagement of all stakeholders. Further, the policy focuses on effective care delivery based on the Affordable Care Act and the improvement of Medicare and Medicaid Services (The White House, 2023). It also improves the mental health workforce and system capacity to increase access to quality care services. It improves crisis care and develops suicide prevention infrastructure. | The policy increases allocation for mental health services, focuses on long-term sustainability, and ensures patients have better access to quality care (Health Systems and Policy Monitor (HSPM), 2023). |
What are the weaknesses of this policy? | The policy requires individuals to have health insurance which may limit its scope, especially among the uninsured who require mental health services (The White House, 2023). The policy relies on collaboration with state government based on the provisions of the Affordable Care Act yet some states do not have ACA. | The policy limits beneficiaries due to reduced allocated resources. The policy is not comprehensive for all suffering based on the eligibility criteria (Health Systems and Policy Monitor (HSPM), 2023). |
Explain how the social determinants of health may impact the specified global health issue. (Be specific and provide examples)
| Social determinants of health (SDOH) may impact the issue as it means that individuals with better education, access to healthcare, and based on their neighborhood as well as their economic statuses may benefit more from the plan than others. Social determinants of health are essential as they inform the best aspects of care for individuals with mental health disorders. For instance, individuals without health insurance based on ACA may not be eligible for care despite having a mental health issue. |
|
How has each country’s government addressed cost, quality, and access to the selected global health issue? | The federal government has addressed the cost, quality, and access to mental health interventions to reduce the prevalence through different legislations like the American Rescue Plan (ARP) and the National Mental Health Strategy (The White House, 2022). For instance, the ARP mandates federal health agencies to access funding to help improve workforce capacity and expand mental health services. | The Italian health ministry through over 126 departments has addressed the cost, quality, and access to mental health services by improving awareness and collaborating with communities. The government allocates more resources to ensure citizens can access free mental health services (Carpiniello et al., 2022). However, co-payment exists which may have adverse effects as patients may shy away from getting or seeking care in such public facilities with long waiting lists and few providers. |
How has the identified health policy impacted the health of the global population? (Be specific and provide examples) | Mental health affects the health of the global population as governments and health systems dedicate more resources to reducing its prevalence and possible comorbidities, especially those related to substance use disorders. The issue affects the global population as it means that a significant number are not well and may be a threat to the lives of others due to related violence. |
|
Describe the potential impact of the identified health policy on the role of nurses in each country. | Mental health policy in the United States has a significant impact on the role of nurses. The policy focuses on expanding access to mental health services through strengthening the workforce. As such, the policy expands the role of nurses in the U.S. as they specialize in offering mental health services (The White House, 2023). They also work with communities and individuals to expand services and ensure all access to them. | The policy means that nurses enhance their skills and competencies to meet the expanding demand for mental health services in Italy. The increased funding means that nurses should specialize and deal with diverse patients having an array of mental health conditions (Silvestri et al., 2023). Therefore, nurses become primary care providers to meet the increased demand for mental health services.
|
Explain how global health issues impact local healthcare organizations and policies in both countries. (Be specific and provide examples) | Global health issues have a significant effect on local healthcare organizations and policies in the United States as they lead to the development of effective measures to contain them. For instance, the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic led to policy measures and changes in organizations to improve access to care for infected persons.
| In Italy, global health issues like the COVID-19 pandemic devastated healthcare organizations and led to the development of responsive policies at various levels of government to contain the spread (Carpiniello et al., 2022). As such, global health issues imply that health organizations must be prepared to deal with their occurrence through sufficient resource allocation and a multi-sectorial approach to reduce their effects on populations. |

Part 2
Walden University defines positive social change as a deliberate process focused on developing and applying ideas, strategies, and actions to improve the worth, dignity, and development of people, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures, and societies (Walden University, n.d). As such, mental health impairs an individual’s worth, dignity, respect, and even development in their communities, organizations, and cultures. Global lenses or perspectives implore nurses and other healthcare providers to consider individuals as having inherent worth irrespective of their diverse backgrounds (Taylor et al., 2023). I will advocate for the integration of a global perspective into the local practice and role as a nurse leader by collaborating with all stakeholders, applying successful strategies used by other systems, and effectively communicating on areas for improvement. I will advocate culturally competent care, partner with international organizations, and advocate policies and practices that have worked elsewhere and can work in the practice setting as long as they lead to better outcomes.
The integration of a global perspective into the local practice and the role of a nurse leader can have a significant impact that includes better understanding, improved patient outcomes, emphasis on culturally competent care, and professional development. Enhanced understanding occurs as the global perspective broadens one’s perception and knowledge of global health challenges leading to the development of collaborative yet innovative approaches and solutions to addressing them. By integrating a global perspective, nurses can provide culturally sensitive care to patients from diverse backgrounds leading to better satisfaction, and adherence to treatment interventions (Taylor et al., 2023). Again, professional growth happens when nurses and nurse leaders embrace a global perspective as they engage in collaboration and health initiatives with an international approach for better outcomes leading to professional growth based on an expanded network and one being exposed to a diverse healthcare system. The implication is that one develops leadership and managerial skills that are critical to overall care delivery.
Conclusion
Global health issues like mental health disorders require a collaborative approach and policy measures that resonate with the population’s care demands. Policy measures in both the US and Italy demonstrate the critical need to expand services for all patients irrespective of their locations and cultures. A global perspective or lens is essential for nurses as it expands their understanding and leads to the integration of best practices to improve care delivery for the affected health population.
