NURS 8002: Foundations and Essentials for the Doctor of Nursing Practice
NURS 8002: Foundations and Essentials for the Doctor of Nursing Practice
In selecting Walden University’s DNP degree program, you are committed to promoting positive social change on behalf of the nursing profession and the countless individuals, communities, and organizations you will serve. You have also voiced your commitment to the transformative process of taking a leadership role, as the DNP-prepared nurse, to enact evidence-based practice changes for the delivery of quality, safe, and cost-effective healthcare.
In this first course of the DNP program, you will examine the strategies and resources available to you as an online student at Walden University. You will reflect on your personal and professional motivations for pursing the DNP degree and becoming a DNP-prepared nurse. As you progress throughout the course, you will apply the DNP Essentials and demonstrate how completing a practicum/field experience and a Doctoral Project in fulfilling the DNP degree program requirements represents alignment to the Essentials set forth for professional nurse practice. You will engage in a series of assessments with your colleagues in which you will explore the role of the DNP-prepared nurse in fostering intra-professional collaboration and a community of practice. You will also hone your skills in conducting a literature search of peer-reviewed research that aligns to a topic of interest or area of focus that can serve as preparation for the planning of your Doctoral Project. An examination of ethical issues and a commitment to serving as an agent of change for the promotion of positive social change is also explored.
Again, welcome to Foundations and Essentials for the Doctor of Nursing Practice.

Time management will be key to your success.
- My favorite time management tip is for students to break their work into manageable chunks over the course of a week, month or term.
- Develop a schedule and stick to it.
- Plan ahead. Your hectic schedule, combined with daily distractions, can easily get in the way of finishing tasks.
- Be sure to create a balance between coursework and your other obligations. Find time for self-care.
