Christian Perspective of the Nature of Spirituality and Ethics
The Christian perspective on the nature of spirituality is that it is a set of beliefs, values, and way of life that reflect the teachings of the Bible. Spirituality entails our relationship to what we value and our commitment to live in a manner in line with what our love demands (Villegas, 2018). As per the Christian perspective, spirituality defines this ultimate love as God. Christian spirituality presupposes a commitment to live according to God, as mentioned by Jesus that God is the source and end of all love (Villegas, 2018). Christians perceive God as the one in whom everything else has meaning and worth.
To make spirituality the foundation of ethics and morality, it means that the person we become and the choices we make should reflect what we ultimately love. Ethics in Christianity are founded on the Ten Commandments, the Great Commandment, and the Golden Rule (Villegas, 2018). The Christian perspective on ethics is that they should also be grounded by personal character. This includes our stable identity, beliefs and attitudes, values and virtues deepest desires and ideals, loyalties and commitments, and our motivation and perspective.
Spirituality inspires and influences the commitment of religious communities to establish institutions that care for the sick (Orr, 2015). The practice of spiritual disciplines can have a positive medical impact and should be considered a significant variable in the overall well-being of the patient in health care (Orr, 2015). In patient care, spirituality is exhibited by providing holistic care to patients and treating them as human beings rather than objects. Besides, ethics are demonstrated in health care by upholding moral principles such as patient’s right to autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice.
Scientism and Arguments against It
According to the article “10 Things You Should Know About Scientism,” by Moreland, Scientism is defined as a position in philosophy rather than in science. Scientism has claims that are assertions about science and not of science. Scientism is categorized as either strong or weak scientism (Moreland, 2018). Strong scientism is the perception that the only knowledge that exists about reality is the knowledge that has been properly tested in the hard sciences, particularly physics and chemistry (Moreland, 2018). According to strong scientism, all other claims such as theological, ethical, political, aesthetic, are meagre expressions of emotion and private opinions. On the other hand, weak scientism agrees that there may be modestly justified beliefs outside science (Moreland, 2018). However, the settled assertions of the hard sciences are much superior to claims outside science.
There are two main claims against Scientism. Firstly, there is a claim that scientism contributes to secularism and marginalizes Christianity and ethics (Moreland, 2018). Scientism contributes to the secularization of culture since it causes individuals to believe that no one can know anything about God, and right and wrong (Moreland, 2018). Consequently, claims in religion and ethics can be disregarded since no one can identify whether those claims are reasonable or irrational.
The second main claim is that Scientism is resulting in people abandoning Christianity. According to a survey by Barna, five of the six explanations of people quitting the church and abandoning Christianity is due to the suspicion that there is no good reason to believe in Christianity (Moreland, 2018). Besides, one of those six reasons was the fact that the church does not support the developments of modern science (Moreland, 2018). People also state that the church does not know how to relate to the developments from a biblical worldview.
Ultimate Reality
Ultimate reality is an expression that denotes to the most powerful being that is supreme and fundamental in all power. In my perspective and worldview, ultimate reality is God who is the Supreme Being and the creator of the universe and everything in it. There are several terms that I use to describe the ultimate reality, such as Yahweh, God, and Jehovah. My perspective is based on the Bible, which portrays God as the Eternal Ultimate Reality through whom all things exist. The Bible describes God as Omnipotent meaning that He is the all-powerful and God Almighty. God is also described as Omnipresent signifying that He is all present and is also omniscient meaning that God is all-knowing. Based on the Bible’s description of God, my perspective is that God is the ultimate reality, who surpasses all things and human beings. Besides, it is in God whom all things exist, and He depicts truthfulness and completeness.
The Nature of the Universe
I view the universe as the totality of existence and everything that will ever exist. In my view, the universe was created by God and everything in it. God is the creator of all things, and He created it by the word of his mouth. However, God did not create the world in a chaotic manner but with order and organization. The creation of the universe was in clarity, although God created it in an open system meaning that it was not programmed. I believe that human beings may never explore the entire universe and that God unfolds His creation daily.
Human beings have been given the mandate by God to make God’s creation and the universe a better place, and thus humans have a significant impact on the universe. Consequently, the choices human beings make about the environment are significant to God and have permanent consequences.
A Human Being
A human being is a supreme creature created by God and was given the power by God to take care of the universe. Human beings are created in the image of God and thus reflect, though indistinctly, the glory of God’s character. Based on this, humans are like God. Human beings were given the greatest power and knowledge capacity by God and given the responsibility to take care of God’s creation. I believe that a human being entails more than the physical aspect we see and comprises the body, mind, and soul. The human mind enables us to come up with creative ideas and invent things that ease our lives. The soul entails the internal being responsible for emotions, and it is what defines us.
Knowledge
I define knowledge as human knowing which we acquire from reading and God’s grace. As a human being, I have the capacity to know both God and the world around me. A human can acquire knowledge about God by reading the Bible and through God’s divine grace. We gain knowledge about the universe from the Holy Scripture as well as through reading literature and research. Nonetheless, humans should ascertain that the information they obtain is from a reliable source. I believe that God continues to reveal the universe to us, and we also increase our human knowing day by day. Because God is all-knowing and we are His creatures, human beings have been given the capacity by God to know the world and God. Human beings are God’s most supreme creatures and have the highest level of knowledge.
Basis of Ethics
My basis of ethics is that they are founded on God’s character. In regards to this, ethics should uphold absolute truth and absolute morality. Ethics, guided by God’s character, provide a clear and definite right and wrong because they are by God’s holy character. I believe that there should be an absolute standard by which all moral judgments are evaluated, and this should be in line with God’s character portrayed in the Bible as well as God’s commandments.
Purpose of My Existence
I believe that every human being comes to this world for a reason. There is a short period between when one is born and when one dies. In this period, I should try to identify my purpose in this world and strive to achieve it. In my worldview, I exist to make an impact on the universe by serving people to improve their lives and make the world a better place for future generations. By identifying our purpose in this world, we attain self-actualization, and we get a desire to be the best we can be.

Sample Answer 2 for PHI-413V Worldview Analysis and Personal Inventory
Worldviews are a set of beliefs, values, and perspectives on issues that impact and influence individuals’ understanding of the world. Nurses as a core part of healthcare provision should understand different worldviews emanating from their patients to enhance their understanding and determine effective ways to provide care (Bogue et al., 2020). The purpose of this paper is to analyze different worldviews that can impact care delivery in nursing. The paper also provides a personal inventory concerning different aspects that impact one’s worldview.
- Based on the topic Resources, in 250-300 words, explain the Christian perspective of the nature of spirituality and ethics.
People express spirituality based on their views, values, beliefs, and traditions. Christians perceive spirituality and ethics as emanating from God. Christians assert that God is the foundation of moral ethics and spirituality of every human being. Christians advance that God created all people in His image to live in a loving relationship with Him. Christianity advances that God provides the moral and ethical foundation for individuals to make better and more informed decisions (Bogue et al., 2020). This influences Christian values in nursing that include compassion, unconditional love, and genuine care for patients with diverse conditions. According to Christianity, God is the creator of the universe, a loving heavenly father, who exists in all positive things that one does. Christians believe that the Holy Spirit guides their actions including saying the truth and empowering them to serve others in Jesus’s name. Christian worldview attributes wellness and health as God’s gifts and demonstrates keen adherence to His commandments. As such, spirituality directs people to make better choices and focus on God’s commandments and teachings through the bible. Christianity appreciates that spirituality entails an effective understanding of the spiritual and theological aspects that advance the notion of God’s reality (Domingo et al., 2020). Christians believe that effective following of God’s law and commandments is essential because God decides whatever transpires in the world. The Christian stance of spirituality and values is essential for healthcare providers to make better care decisions when dealing with patients from diverse backgrounds. The Christian philosophy emphasizes the need to reduce suffering, encouraging hope and wellness and rejuvenating vitality. Imperatively, nurses who incorporate the Christian worldview in their approach to care are likely to offer better judgment when dealing with patients in different areas of care delivery. |
- Based on the topic Resources, in 250-300 words, explain the term scientism and describe two of the main arguments against it.
Scientism refers to efforts that elevate scientific perception, ideas, attitudes, and principles as well as practices as the only sources of knowledge. Proponents of scientism advance that all knowledge emanates from scientific methods and tools since all things must be examined and proven scientifically. Advocates of scientism appreciate that science is the only foundation of all knowledge a human can ever attain and maintain (Burnett, 2020). Scientism is parallel to Christianity concerning its principles and ideas. For instance, while Christianity maintains that there is life after death, scientism believes that death is the end of human living. Conversely, arguments against scientism continue to emerge. The two critical arguments against scientism include scientism being constructed on a non-scientific foundation and its self-refuting aspect. Hard sciences like biology, chemistry, and physics do not have complete validities and realities since they emanate from the current aspects of versions of the cosmos and gauging tools. Additionally, the false predicament of scientism asserts that human prospects like senses and remembrance emanate from non-scientific bases. Secondly, science is self-refuting and cannot offer knowledge concerning all aspects and phenomena in the world. Scientism advances that all things need support and testing based on scientific concepts and knowledge. Again, scientism cannot test and prove all phenomena (Burnett, 2020). For instance, scientism is limited in its ability to examine aspects associated with one’s spirituality and emotional relations. Furthermore, one cannot test values like love and emotions by applying scientific knowledge. As such, the limiting factors of scientism mean that it cannot be used to prove critical phenomena that impact human living, especially interactions within healthcare settings. The implication is that scientism fails to perpetuate itself and prove its ideology that all knowledge emanates from science since it cannot prove many aspects of human living and interactions. |
- Respond to each of the worldview prompts according to your worldview, or “your own personal beliefs that comprise your worldview.”
- In 125-150 words, explain ultimate reality.
Ultimate reality is acknowledging the validity and supernatural nature of God and all things He has created. God controls the cosmos and His word is authority for all people who believe in His existence. The universe and its presence, including man and his authority over all creation demonstrate the ultimate reality. From the physical aspect, what I see, feel, touch, and enjoy through the people and objects that surround me form the basis of my ultimate reality. From a spiritual perspective, the ultimate reality is God and his divine nature which humans can share through intense meditation, reflection, and prayers (Cristiano, 2020). The ultimate reality creates the union between the physical world and the spiritual realm. Human beings have both physical and spiritual natures, and these allow them to live glorifying God for His abundant love. |
- In 125-150 words, explain the nature (origin) of the universe.
The nature of the universe entails God’s creation, His purpose for human beings, and the life that people live in the physical world yet also enjoy the spiritual connection that they can get, especially in union with Him. The universe entails its physical nature, the created earth by God and the interactive aspects that man enjoys with all creation (Domingo et al., 2020). I believe that the origin of the universe is about showing man love and the worthiness of their creation by God. The nature of the cosmos is that it affects both the living and non-living things, the planets, and the galaxy. While the universe is not definite, distinct occasions happen on the earth, including actions by man, celestial beings, and even sacred essences. The universe maintains life given by God and borders on the ultimate reality that people feel in their interactions. |
- In 125-150 words, explain what it means to be a human being and if there is purpose in human life and existence.
A human being is God’s creation and among the living things found in the universe. God created man in His image; implying that at the core of human beings are two aspects; the spiritual and the physical nature. God’s image is spiritual and this allows man to feel, and sense emotions for others while also attaining a higher calling by seeking divinity (Cristiano, 2020). The human being has knowledge, intelligence, and abilities that are different from other created things by God. The human being has a soul, body, and spirit that control his living in the world. Human beings have inherent dignity and respect by being created in God’s image. Human beings have a purpose in life and existence. I believe that God created every person in the world differently and with a unique purpose as well as the essence of their existence. As such, human beings live to fulfill the original purpose as asserted by God, to fill the world and make it a better place. |
- In 125-150 words, explain what knowledge is and what the sources of knowledge are.
Knowledge is an abstract concept whose presence is illustrated yet its exact existence cannot be proven physically. However, at the core of knowledge is the possession of unique information, data, and skills that one acquires through education, training, and experiences. Knowledge can also be the intellectual capacity of a person in certain areas or subjects due to education or experience (Bolisani et al., 2019). Experience entails familiarization with knowledge while education entails attending formal and informal lessons in different settings. As such, the acquisition of knowledge requires one to get its sources, especially legitimate sources and places. However, going to school, interacting with people informally, and self-acquisition through reading and related areas allow one to acquire and even improve their knowledge. Bogue et al. (2020) advance that one can acquire knowledge in multiple ways since areas of exploration are limitless yet the current knowledge is limited. |
- In 125-150 words, explain ethics and where the knowledge of right and wrong comes from.
Ethics are about one’s values, morals, beliefs, and practices aimed at advancing the good and wellness, especially the common good for the greater majority. Ethics allow man to develop moral values that determine their decisions in life. Ethics outlines what is permissible in society and what cannot be allowed. Ethics form the guiding principles of a community and the expected conduct, behaviors, and values among its members. The knowledge of what is right and wrong comes from ethical conduct in society. Ethical principles developed by the community and its members are at the core of developing effective interactions among the different stakeholders (Bogue et al., 2020). Individuals develop this knowledge through experiences and teachings offered by the community. Communities expect their members to behave and conduct themselves in ways that are beneficial and lead to better living based on ethics. |
- In 125-150 words, explain the purpose of your life and existence.
God created each person for a purpose in this world. The two critical reasons for one’s existence in the world are procreation and stewardship. God asserts that He created human beings to be fruitful and increase in number and dominate all creations; both on land and in water (Domingo et al., 2020). Therefore, the purpose of my life and existence is to serve God through service to others. As a healthcare provider, I believe that offering care by exceeding the expected performance is at the core of this purpose. As a steward of His resources, I should conserve the environment, protect all other creations, and work according to His purpose and will. My existence should provide happiness to humanity; both close to me and away from me. I exist because God knows my role in the world and what He expects from me. |
- In 125-150 words, explain the influence of your personal worldview values in decision-making within current or future professional practice.
My worldview values have a critical influence and impact on decision-making within the current professional practice and even the future. Based on my worldview, I can integrate different aspects of care provision, especially in dealing with patients from diverse backgrounds who possess different yet competing needs. Using my worldview, I should treat all patients equally and with love knowing that I am fulfilling God’s purpose. I should consider these people as a core part of the universe and ultimate reality while advancing that all deserve respect and dignity because of their uniqueness (Piedmont et al., 2020). My worldview is also critical in making care plans for patients as it means that I should offer holistic care that focuses on their wellness, better living and ensuring that they can experience spiritual levels for healing and better outcomes. |
Conclusion
Worldviews are essential for nurses and other healthcare providers as they offer a framework to interact with patients. Having one’s worldview improves their handling of diverse patients and increases their ability to solve problems in their care practice settings. As illustrated in this paper, the Christian worldview helps nurses to integrate better care and approaches to patient issues because they have increased levels of emotional intelligence.

Sample Answer 3 for PHI-413V Worldview Analysis and Personal Inventory
Individuals perceive the world distinctly based on different aspects. There are a host of factors that may influence how people perceive the world and analyze what ensues around them. They include culture, socio-political environment, religion, and personal life encounters. A worldview characterizes a mental representation of reality. It involves an inclusive construction of attitudes and ideas about oneself, the world, and life. It also entails a system of principles and a system of individually modified presumptions of the world and how it operates. The worldview that this assignment will focus on is the Christian worldview. The Christian worldview is founded on the teachings, principles, and values of Jesus Christ (Canda et al., 2019). According to this worldview, God is the creator of all things in the universe including moral values and standards. Deviation from the Biblical teaching, values, and standards is regarded as a sin. This paper aims to discuss the Christian perspective of the nature of spirituality and ethics in contrast to the perspective of postmodern relativism within health care. The paper will also explain scientism and describe two of the main arguments against it. Moreover, various worldview questions will also be addressed.
The Christian Perspective of the Nature of Spirituality and Ethics in Contrast to the Perspective of Postmodern Relativism within Health Care
According to the Christian perspective, spirituality entails believing in God who is a higher being. Christians believe that God is the creator of human beings and all creatures and He is the giver of good health and disease. This worldview teaches that God has control over anything. He has the power over diseases and can restore good health without necessarily seeking medical care. Christians believe that sickness is authorized by God as a test of faith in Him, punishment, or to let human beings discover His supernatural powers (Canda et al., 2019). Such powers were manifested in the Biblical story of Job. As such, Christians believe that they can seek God’s intervention during sickness through prayers and get healed without seeking medical interventions. On the other hand, the Christian perspective of ethics is anchored on the notion of objective morality. According to Christians, it is God’s Will that human beings should always strive for good and avoid evil actions (Nicolaides, 2020). This idea informs the basis of the greatest commandment in the Bible that people should love their neighbor as they love themselves. Christians also advocate for truth, which is a crucial ethical value in healthcare. Ethics influence various Christian values in nursing including caring, compassion, and unconditional love for all patients irrespective of their backgrounds.
As opposed to the Christian worldview, postmodern relativism characterizes a cynical perspective of well-being and disease. This philosophy argues that truth can be established devoid of any specific belief system (Himmelfarb, 2019). It advances the objectivity of science and scientific facts in the treatment of patients. This worldview would question nursing and medical interventions in the treatment of disease since every action cannot be certain and their value is relative. It implies that this worldview holds that nothing is certain in healthcare. As such, the perception of diseases in healthcare and how they are addressed is based on the perception of the person looking at them.
Scientism and Arguments Against it
Scientism characterizes the perception that science is the only way to obtain and address problems in the world including diseases and their treatment. Moreover, all the occurrences in the entire universe can only be explained through science. This notion implies that real knowledge can only be informed by science (Rosenberg, 2020). However, scientism differs from science in the sense that scientism is a theoretical perspective that does not explain nature but scientific tools and the related limitations of scientific understanding.
There are various arguments against scientism. One, scientism cannot provide insightful knowledge about all occurrences and objects in the world. That is, scientific tests cannot establish and prove all phenomena (Burnett, 2020). For instance, science has failed to establish the physiology behind emotions, morality, free will, spirituality, or right and good as well as functions of the brain. Also, there are several parts of the brain whose functions cannot be explained by science. As such, science is still unable to conclusively explain various phenomena including the ones that touch crucial aspects of human lives. The second criticism of scientism is that it is more self-contradictory (Burnett, 2020). This argument is founded on the fact that the central principle of scientism is that everything must be scientifically tested or supported to be proven as true or existing. However, the notion of the value of scientism itself cannot be appraised scientifically or supported by science. As such, this criticism holds that science cannot justify the relevance of scientism as a philosophy.
Ultimate Reality
I believe that the ultimate reality comes in two forms that Christians and other people with different worldviews can easily identify with. The first form of ultimate reality is what I can observe, touch, and feel. For instance, living things need food for survival and a human being can only give birth to a child, not a calf. The other form of ultimate reality relates to spirituality. As a Christian, the ultimate reality is in a divine concept and it is a reality that does not involve the processes of the physical world (Christian, 2020). For instance, there is God in Heaven and Jesus will come back to take His people to New Jerusalem. As such, I believe that ultimate reality entails both physical and spiritual nature.
Nature of the Universe
Like the ultimate reality, my perception of the nature of the universe is equally anchored on the physical nature and the spiritual nature. In its physical form, the universe is anything that exists in it, in whichever state, on earth, and other planets. The entire universe is vast and its nature is a mystery that is yet to be fully discovered by humans. On the spiritual aspect, I believe that the universe was created by some divine forces (Christian, 2020). For instance, the Bible says that God created the earth and everything. As a Christian, I believe that God used the same strategy to create the entire universe.
A Human Being
A human being is one of the living things on earth. A human being is the wisest of all creatures found on earth and is equipped with the ability to reason. Of all the creatures on earth, only human beings can sense and differentiate right and wrong and also possess the free will to choose between right and wrong. The human being was given an advanced brain over other creatures and they have used it resourcefully for various benefits and to make sense of the earth (Clayton, 2018). For instance, human beings have effectively studied their body and recognized the nature and reasons for illnesses that affect them. In turn, they have identified various interventions to address such illnesses. However, despite the superior brain, human beings have also failed in various aspects of life. Nonetheless, these special attributes of human beings over other creatures can only be illustrated through spiritual perspectives and not the existing scientific or other knowledge.
Knowledge
I believe that knowledge is a conceptual notion whose availability can be shown but its precise existence is not known. Knowledge is not inherent at birth. People only acquire knowledge through education. This is supported by the ability of the human brain to acquire and store information obtained. However, it is beyond human beings to identify the physical location of the human brain where the knowledge is located. In fact, only assumptions have been advanced concerning the part of the brain where knowledge is located. Therefore, knowledge is a conceptual reality that cannot be physically established.
My Basis of Ethics
As a Christian, my basis of ethics is anchored on a Christian worldview that stresses causing no harm to others by doing what is good to people irrespective of whether or not they have done something harmful to me. This ethics is reinstated in the Biblical teaching of the greatest commandment of love to my neighbors. The other basis of ethics is a desire to do justice to all by ensuring equitable distribution of resources and advocating for access to basic needs of life including healthcare needs to all irrespective of background (Hare, 2022). Another basis of my ethics is anchored on the need to ensure that everyone exercises autonomy by encouraging them to apply their free will.
Purpose of My Existence
On a personal level, I intend to have a full and happy life guided by morality and developing effective socialization. However, I also intend to serve a greater purpose during my existence above personal needs by serving others through nursing care and interactions with them. As a Christian, I believe in the higher calling to help and serve people in need of help. My objective is to change the lives of people, especially patients who I care for in my clinical practice. Based on Christian teachings, I believe that the primary obligation of human beings is not only to serve God but also human beings who need my help (Hare, 2022).
Conclusion
This paper focused primarily on a Christian worldview, which is founded on the teachings, principles, and values of Jesus Christ. The paper has succinctly described the Christian perspective of the nature of spirituality and ethics against the perspective of postmodern relativism within health care. The notion of scientism has also been elaborated including the arguments against it. Finally, the paper addressed various worldview questions including ultimate reality, nature of the universe, a human being, knowledge, basis of ethics, and purpose of existence, based on the personal perspective and worldview.
