Whether one passes or fails an academic assignment such as the Walden University PRAC 6665 WEEK 1 Clinical Skills Self-Assessment depends on the preparation done beforehand. The most important thing here is to understand the required format—whether it is APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.
After understanding the requirements of the paper, the next phase is to gather relevant materials. The first place to start the research process is the weekly resources. Go through the resources provided in the instructions to determine which ones fit the assignment. Another important factor to consider at this point is how to do citations. In-text citations are fundamental as they support the arguments and points you make in the paper. At this point, the resources gathered at the beginning will come in handy. Integrating the ideas of the authors with your own will ensure that you produce a comprehensive paper. Summary of strengths:
The clinical skills self-assessment has helped me identify the clinical skills that I can confidently perform with regard to my future PMHNP role. I have identified that I am mostly confident demonstrating my comprehensive psychiatric evaluation skills, self-assessment skills, and professional skills. During the self-assessment, I have learned that I am confident in my skills of providing psychoeducation to clients and provide health and disease prevention strategies to various patient populations (Cai et al., 2022). I can attribute my professional skills to my work experience as a registered nurse where I have learned how to create and sustain professional boundaries and therapeutic relationship with patients and other healthcare professionals. During my RN practice, I have mostly been part of an interdisciplinary team where I collaborate with other providers to provide quality and safe patient care (Wheeler et al., 2022). I have also learned to interact with patients in a non-judgmental way and demonstrate empathy to clients and their families.

Opportunities for growth:
The self-assessment activity not only helped me identify my confident areas but also that I am less confident and require supervision when performing. These are the skills that I need to pay more attention to during this clinical practicum and ensure that I am confident by the end of the practicum. I have identified opportunities of growth in pharmacotherapeutic skills, diagnostic reasoning, psychotherapeutic treatment planning, and selecting and using screening instruments (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2020); Kumar et al., 2020). I need to improve my ability to perform these skills because I will require them in my future PMHNP practice given that the roles of a PMHNP include assessing patients, diagnosing, and developing and implementing treatment plans. |
Now, write three to four (3–4) possible goals and objectives for this practicum experience. Ensure that they follow the SMART Strategy, as described in the Learning Resources.
1. Goal: By the end of 10 weeks I will have conducted comprehensive mental health assessments to at least 10 adult and pediatric clients. a. Objective: Perform detailed psychiatric interviews for 10 clients. b. Objective: Conduct thorough physical exams for 10 patients. c. Objective: Perform mental status exams for 10 patients.
2. Goal: By the end of ten weeks, I will have come up with at least three differential diagnoses for each patient that I assess. a. Objective: Select appropriate mental health screening tools for each patient. b. Objective: Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests. c. Objective: Utilize the DSM-5 in identifying the differential diagnoses as per a patient’s presentation.
3. Goal: By the end of 10 weeks, I will have created treatment plans for at least 10 adult and pediatric patients diagnosed with mental health disorders. a. Objective: Use clinical guidelines to guide in selecting evidence-based interventions. b. Objective: Create health education and promotion plans for clients and their families. c. Objective: Engage in interprofessional collaboration to develop holistic patient care plans.
